Been trying to understand the meaning of the song and I've argued with my sister over it. She thinks its about a common common breakup of lovers/close friends but I believe its about losing someone you love because of death.The focal sign to it is:

"...I fought with myself thinking that she could be with somebody else.

But the truth is that she's gone."

The 2nd line contradicts the 1st. Why would he want to think that she is with someone else you ask? Because then, at least she's alive.
