  • You rock! Facts we did not know.

  • So... I was listening and I was trying to figure out how I knew this song. Then I realized, my rabbi's rock band (yeah....my rabbi is awesome) changed the words for passover. It goes, "Pharaoh Pharaoh, ooh baby let me people go." Just let that sink it.

  • Can I get this cover any where? Because it is awesome

  • MY NAME IS LOUIS BUT I'M FRENCH SO IT'S LOUIE AND I'M GOING TO GO DIE IN HAPPINESS NOW THAT HE SAID MY NAME OMG I AM SO HAPPY

  • Were the Kingsmen French?

  • Is that C-60 on Hank's desk?

  • I met the former singer of the kingsmen Jack E. Lee he said that he was told the song was originally written after someone listened too a bar conversation and he just filled in gaps to make it sound a little catchier lolz

  • The kingsmen = the kinks ?

  • Wow. Way to leave your lunch dishes on your desk whilst making a video. Now the debate among music lovers is settled.

  • I like Iggy Pop's version of this.

  • BAHAHA! My guitar has a variation of the Woody Guthrie thing, too. It says "This Machine Kills Time."

  • @90Boone You win at life.

  • This is a really pleasant! I love that song, and I love Hank's music! Great combination!

  • I play this on my flute... Heh. I'm so sending this to my band teacher.

  • i can play this song on the trombone...dftba

  • As a former church camp counselor, I reacted thus:

"HOLY COW - IT'S THE TUNE TO THE SONG 'PHARAOH PHARAOH!'"

I said 'a Pharaoh, Pharaoh, oh baby let my people go, ooo ahh, yea yea yea yea.

A burnin' bush told me just the other day/ oh yeah that I should come over here and say/ gotta get my people outta Pharaoh's hand/ and lead them all to the Promised land/ I said 'a Pharaoh Pharaoh, oh baby let my people go, ooo ahh, yea yea yea yea.

    How fun!

  • I would be perfectly fine if I never have to hear this song ever again. We play this on a loop in marching band when we march in parades and it gets old pretty fast. Still, cool story behind it :)

  • we played that in 6th grade jazz band. I never played the melody. I played an accompaniment. that what you get when you play the french horn.

  • i love it by the kingsmen, dont hate

  • Louie Louie is one of my marching band's stand tunes!

  • @PhantomoftheForum Awesome! This year is the 50th anniversary of a restaurant in my town. Our marching band was invited to play and we are playing this song! Along with Do Wah Diddy and I Got You (I Feel Good)

  • @PhantomoftheForum Me too! It's a lot of fun, but then it's stuck in your head for the next week.

  • well......i quite liked it done by the kingsmen.

  • it's awesome because it's fun. Just watch the film "Mr. Holland's Opus"

  • Half punk..half jamaican...you mean ska?

  • Fun - thanks! Featured on the site this afternoon.

  • the kingsmen didn't broke up, they still around, although theres only one original member from '59 till now, mike mitchell .

  • I wish it was on Indy's radios!

  • The Kingsmen sent me here!!

  • Why are you not subscribed to communitychannel!

  • Interesting. I never would have thought the history of that song was so unique and detailed! *the more you know* :D thanks Hank!

  • hahahaha, straight up. your so ghetto. :)

  • This is England.

  • As Paul Harvey would say, "And now you know... the rest of the story."

  • Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!

    -J

  • The Iggy Pop version is just....what? What happened in that song? Where did those lyrics come from?

  • Skypefighters FTW

  • I've had this song on my ipod for forever, and I never understood the lyrics or knew the history behind it until now!

  • The only version of this song I know is the Sunday-school "pharaoh" version. Thanks for the mini music-history lesson!

  • I love your cover the best, Hank!

  • you should do a cover of wild thing! haha :)

  • So, I played this song in band as a young(er) lass. It was pretty fun to be up in the bleachers at football games playing this song and jiving like we were from the sixties. Good times. ^-^

  • I knew the chorus to this song cause we sang it in a medley in choir and it was right before my solo.

  • we play this as a stands tune in marching band, I looked it up once and it was NOT what I had expected. THANK YOU! for restoring my faith in it.

  • The Kingsmen didn't ruin it as bad as Motorhead, Hank. It hurt. A lot. Definitely headdesk worthy. Without the theatrical misleadings. BE WARNED, ALL YE WHO LISTEN!

  • OMG YOU HAVE AN OBALL I LOVE THOSE THINGS.

Oh yeah, and cool, y'know, singing and stuff.

  • On The Kingsmen version you can here the drummer say fuck if you listn very carefully. Around the third verse.

  • cool...

  • I see you have begun using your iPad as a tea-serving tray... I personally use mine as a cookie caddy, but to each his own...

    Thanks for the song!

  • WHATWHATWHATWHAT

  • this is one of our pepband songs

  • @OrangeZest100 It's a pep band song at our school too! I play clarinet, so I literally only have one note the whole time :]

  • @GiraffeWithStripes GGG GG GGG GG GGG GG GGG... Lol. I feel your pain.

  • @GiraffeWithStripes I play clarinet too. :D

  • I understand that you are covering a song, and are trying to preserve the original lyrical integrity so that we can understand them, but does it not hurt your soul to use "me" in place of "I"?

  • oh louie louie, a winnebago!

  • Hank. Have you heard the "original" version of Louie, Louie as sung by Don & Dewey in 1957. The words are easily understood and yes it is most definitely a Jamaican tune.

In my opinion, the Don & Dewey version remains the best. The Kingsmen version definitely fun but in no way surpasses the original.

  • FACT: The kingsmen went to my high school. And played it live at USO shows we had. Tanya Harding also went to my high school. And those were our claims to fame.

  • @HaleyVlogs Hey that's cool! :D

  • Where can I get an awesome sweatshirt like Hank's??????? I love it!

  • Now I want to watch Mr. Holland's Opus.

  • that is the poppy-est ballad i've ever heard

  • I guess failure breeds success

  • yes love Louie Louie i play this in peppy band!! :)

  • we play this song in pep band during basketball games. i hate it there, and i still dont really enjoy it. haha. but i like your way of playing it!

  • Your voice is... unbelievable. Aagh, so fantastic! :)

  • I like the little speech you said in the beginning, for French the llama, you can make the background history behind a notorious song interesting.'

Is that a cereal bowl next to your computer? Cheers for eating in the office! :D

  • Why didn't i know you had your own channel? Is this common knowledge?

  • @Rachelw i didn't know it either =_= i feel dumb XD lol

  • @1w4nn4

ditto i feel like a noob that was pwned by Hanks guitar for not knowing about this channel

  • I enjoyed it a lot! :D

  • ..Did anybody else squee when they saw Nerimon's comment on a HANK GREEN VIDEO? SERIOUSLY NERIMON AND HANK GREEN. :D

    ...No? Just me? :(

  • awful song.....

  • man that sucked lol

  • This is pretty awesome. :3

  • So awesome <3

  • Yay! I know a new thing.

  • ive never heard this song o.0

  • I used to only know this as “Pharaoh Pharaoh OOOOOooo Baby, let my people go”

From my days at Jesus Camp (but not the creepy notorious one).

  • My chemistry class is working on nuclear reactions (alpha and beta decay) and i loved your quarks song so much I was wondering if you could write a cool song about how nuclear reactions work, too? (Btw my chem teacher was quite impressed with your quarks song also :D ) Thanks!

  • I wrote an essay comparing this song to the Twilight series. They're both deeply flawed, but people derive a lot of pleasure from both. And really, that's the heart of entertainment, isn't it?

  • @ilcyra what does that even mean?

  • I like your version much better than the Kingsman version

  • this is funny

  • Thanks, Hank! This song has been stuck in my head for the past six hours . . . can't . . . stop . . . louie louie . . .

  • For some reason I thought this would be a lesson on the history of Tiny Cooper....

  • I wish I could marry you, Hank Green!

(But, you're already married so I guess not XD)

  • I still like the wrong version though even though my mind has been blown.

  • So awesome =D

  • I can play this on my flute :)

  • lol i love how you're in your pj pants :) :)

  • aw sheit

  • the "yayayaya" in the begining is amazing. I don't know why i like that part so much, but you're amazing at it :D

  • Hank Green: making Louie Louie sound edgy.

  • Motorhead!

  • The Iggy Pop version is best.

  • MOTORHEAD!

  • the kingsmen cover of louis louis is my favorite rock n roll song evah!

  • I played this song in band awhile ago and I never knew the lyrics until now

  • In primary school we learnt about the bible by singing:

    'Pharaoh, Pharaoh, woah oh

Let my people go! Oh Oh!

Well a' pharaoh's army was a coming too, so what did you think that I did do?

So I raised my rod stuck it in the sand and led all of God's people out of Pharoah's land' :D

    It had actions too :)

  • @Thoroughbred17 I sure hope it taught you about Moses and all that jazz :)

I may post the dance sometime (so subscribe if you want)

  • @TippexSniffer Haha, absolutely!!

  • @TippexSniffer well, me and my people crossed the Red Sea Pharaoh's army's comin' after me I raised my rod and I cleared my throat (a-hem) and all of Pharaoh's army did the dead man's float. I'm singing Pharaoh Pharaoh (oh baby) Ooooh Baby let my people go. (Hoo haaa) Yayayaya I'm singing Pharaoh pharaoh (oh baby) Ooooh baby let my people go. (Hoo haaa) Yayayaya That was always my favorite verse.
  • @TippexSniffer Same, except it was some holiday programme. I was like "Meh" though. And now I dislike them because music is a good way to brainwash kids -_-

  • @TippexSniffer At youth camp a few years ago on the last day everyone joined in a congo line singing this and some veggie tales songs.

  • @TippexSniffer Was this the on Easy A ??!?

  • @TippexSniffer that one was awesome!

  • @TippexSniffer Dude, we sang that all the time at my church!

  • @TippexSniffer I learn't that at a camp. It was awesome. DFTBA

  • @TippexSniffer I had to do the same thing too...

  • @TippexSniffer SAME!

  • @TippexSniffer

    I learned that in camp!

  • Who is Louie? O.o I don't understand!

  • I thought you were going to sing sing "Brother Louie" by Modern Talking. I got all excited and then I realized it's not even the title. Fail xp

  • I like it when you talk about music like this, educational and awesome, plus, Louie Louie is one of my favorite songs by a ton of people including the original.

  • i prefer the motorhead version :D

  • I can't stop listening to this cover. You are one of my favorite people in existence, and this video just really makes me want to serenade you with "Every breath you take".

  • More stuff like this please.

  • Only heard this through Motorhead, by far the best version :D

  • I've only ever heard Motorhead's version

  • Did Hank just say "straight up"? woah you're going gangta :)

  • How have i not subscribed to this channel before?

    That was awesome.

  • I sing the Pharaoh Pharaoh version in my head too!!

  • After watching this i searched the song on itunes store and listened to all the versions including the original. the only conclusion i can draw is the kingsmen must have been drunk when they came up with that cover! How you can get from the original jamaican style to the incoherent mess everyone knows sober is beyond me! hank i love your cover but i think my favourite is motorhead cause i cant believe they covered it haha

  • Toots & the maytals do more of a Jamaican version & that's played more on TV & radio than the Kingsmen's. Though I prefer the Troggs' version overall, Kingsmen's still good though.

  • I like this channel better. Fewer editing cuts.

  • Hank with a bit of Patois nice :)

  • I thought it was the kinks...and btw knowjanedoe radical just means intrinsic fundamental roots of something or something...so radical is a good thing...so terrorists are good if they are referred to as radical...so yeah! (slightly off topic soz)

  • For someone who's never heard "Louie Louie" before....this video was quite interesting.

  • O_o I was not even aware that the Pharoah Pharoah version was not the original

  • your way TOO epic for your own good

  • This is a terrible song.

No offense Hank, buit this song is just awful.

  • oh man, you revealed your second channel!!!

that's it, the intimicy of the secret hank channel will be gone real soon

    i'll miss ya

  • Lemmy Kilmister says it pretty clearly...

  • Doesn't sound quite right being able to understand the words- could you do it again without enunciating anything?

  • The mystery is SOLVED! lol

  • This is freaking amazing......

  • lol i love the cereal bowl in the background! hahaha<33

  • Interesting trivia University of South Carolina banned the singing and playing of Louie Louie at football games because it actually made the upper deck of football stadium sway to much. The university had to modify struture and today they can sing Louie Louie. Silly gamecocks.

  • i didnt know the song til now but my day is made:)

  • Hahaaa, The Kinks did an awesome cover (:

  • I heard a spanish version instead of 'we gotta go' they sing 'que paso" which means what's happening?

but i like the original Jamaican version the best and this cover is the bomb. :D

  • I prefer the other "Louie Louie", you know, that song by Toots & The Maytals though this cover is pretty awesome :D

  • You're amazing :)

  • I'm thinking you should be a guest Admiral for our next cover single, and we put this in the digital bundle :D Thoughts?
