So... I was listening and I was trying to figure out how I knew this song. Then I realized, my rabbi's rock band (yeah....my rabbi is awesome) changed the words for passover. It goes, "Pharaoh Pharaoh, ooh baby let me people go." Just let that sink it.
I met the former singer of the kingsmen Jack E. Lee he said that he was told the song was originally written after someone listened too a bar conversation and he just filled in gaps to make it sound a little catchier lolz
As a former church camp counselor, I reacted thus:
"HOLY COW - IT'S THE TUNE TO THE SONG 'PHARAOH PHARAOH!'"
I said 'a Pharaoh, Pharaoh, oh baby let my people go, ooo ahh, yea yea yea yea.
A burnin' bush told me just the other day/ oh yeah that I should come over here and say/ gotta get my people outta Pharaoh's hand/ and lead them all to the Promised land/ I said 'a Pharaoh Pharaoh, oh baby let my people go, ooo ahh, yea yea yea yea.
I would be perfectly fine if I never have to hear this song ever again. We play this on a loop in marching band when we march in parades and it gets old pretty fast. Still, cool story behind it :)
@PhantomoftheForum Awesome! This year is the 50th anniversary of a restaurant in my town. Our marching band was invited to play and we are playing this song! Along with Do Wah Diddy and I Got You (I Feel Good)
So, I played this song in band as a young(er) lass. It was pretty fun to be up in the bleachers at football games playing this song and jiving like we were from the sixties. Good times. ^-^
The Kingsmen didn't ruin it as bad as Motorhead, Hank. It hurt. A lot. Definitely headdesk worthy. Without the theatrical misleadings. BE WARNED, ALL YE WHO LISTEN!
I understand that you are covering a song, and are trying to preserve the original lyrical integrity so that we can understand them, but does it not hurt your soul to use "me" in place of "I"?
Hank. Have you heard the "original" version of Louie, Louie as sung by Don & Dewey in 1957. The words are easily understood and yes it is most definitely a Jamaican tune.
In my opinion, the Don & Dewey version remains the best. The Kingsmen version definitely fun but in no way surpasses the original.
FACT: The kingsmen went to my high school. And played it live at USO shows we had. Tanya Harding also went to my high school. And those were our claims to fame.
My chemistry class is working on nuclear reactions (alpha and beta decay) and i loved your quarks song so much I was wondering if you could write a cool song about how nuclear reactions work, too? (Btw my chem teacher was quite impressed with your quarks song also :D ) Thanks!
I wrote an essay comparing this song to the Twilight series. They're both deeply flawed, but people derive a lot of pleasure from both. And really, that's the heart of entertainment, isn't it?
@TippexSniffer well, me and my people crossed the Red Sea Pharaoh's army's comin' after me I raised my rod and I cleared my throat (a-hem) and all of Pharaoh's army did the dead man's float. I'm singing Pharaoh Pharaoh (oh baby) Ooooh Baby let my people go. (Hoo haaa) Yayayaya I'm singing Pharaoh pharaoh (oh baby) Ooooh baby let my people go. (Hoo haaa) Yayayaya That was always my favorite verse.
@TippexSniffer Same, except it was some holiday programme. I was like "Meh" though. And now I dislike them because music is a good way to brainwash kids -_-
My friend is called Lewis but we all call him Louie and for no reason at all today every time i said his name I sang it to this tune... and then i come home to this! HAPPY DAYS. (L)
I like it when you talk about music like this, educational and awesome, plus, Louie Louie is one of my favorite songs by a ton of people including the original.
I can't stop listening to this cover. You are one of my favorite people in existence, and this video just really makes me want to serenade you with "Every breath you take".
After watching this i searched the song on itunes store and listened to all the versions including the original. the only conclusion i can draw is the kingsmen must have been drunk when they came up with that cover! How you can get from the original jamaican style to the incoherent mess everyone knows sober is beyond me! hank i love your cover but i think my favourite is motorhead cause i cant believe they covered it haha
Toots & the maytals do more of a Jamaican version & that's played more on TV & radio than the Kingsmen's. Though I prefer the Troggs' version overall, Kingsmen's still good though.
I thought it was the kinks...and btw knowjanedoe radical just means intrinsic fundamental roots of something or something...so radical is a good thing...so terrorists are good if they are referred to as radical...so yeah! (slightly off topic soz)
Interesting trivia University of South Carolina banned the singing and playing of Louie Louie at football games because it actually made the upper deck of football stadium sway to much. The university had to modify struture and today they can sing Louie Louie. Silly gamecocks.

'Pharaoh, Pharaoh, woah oh
Let my people go! Oh Oh!
Well a' pharaoh's army was a coming too, so what did you think that I did do?
So I raised my rod stuck it in the sand and led all of God's people out of Pharoah's land' :D
