  • Regia: Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini

  • I didnt like it that much, She was tired, cold and old. Even Alisa looks better :S Im sad cuz mariella is talented, but i dont like her that much here sorry mariella, we still love you

  • Tuvaluhu, I'll bet Devia never will have to have throat surgery....because she sings with ane xcellent technique which Dessay would never be capable of (hence her two surgeries). Not the same voice. This is much heavier and more colorful, the way the rols should be.

  • EXCELENT LADY IN WAITING!!!!

  • Non e la voce di Lucia, direi piu tosto che sento la voce della nonna...

    Una freddissima interpretazione.

  • because she was under 10 years old when callas was doing her best work in this role, it is not fair, for me, to compare the two. Here's what I will say. Callas was the best everrrr..while she was singing and now while she is dead. BUT Devia is the absolute "assoluta" of all singers living today...in this role at least!

thanks for uploading. this is stellar!!

  • Devia di Lammermoor!

  • another highlight, thank you coloraturafan!!!

lovely production too, no need to add something stupid and distracting by some self-important director. This is PERFECT: the best Lucia you can get nowadays staged as it was meant by the composer and the writer.

  • Did she ever sing the final cadenza? I'd like to hear her do it?

  • Orgoglio Italiano della bella musica classica!!!!! :)

  • I really like her voice, but here I think it is too much vibrato!...so not the best aria from her. Check out Guilietta's aria, that's smashing!

  • merveilleuse interprétation .bravo

  • yes! bel canto normally doesnt have the big vocals as is often found in Wagnerian operas. Moreover, most wagnerian singers do not have the agility needed to sing bel canto.

  • recently I watched a broadcast of a Horne and Caballe recital including some shoptalk between them where Ms. Horne stated that she finds bel canto more demanding for a singer than Wagner because - as she put it - you're on your own whereas with Wagner the orchestra carries the singer.

Interesting take I used to think Wagner was more demanding because it's all so huuuuge (like his ego, poor sod) and what about learning the non-melody roles ha-ha?

  • bel canto focuses mainly on the beauty of the voice. Like beauty of vocal color, line, coloratura. Dramatic interpretation (loudness) as found in wagner and straus, isnt much of an issue in bel canto. It just focuses on vocal beauty and agility.

Two Main bel Canto: Bellini and Donzetti.

  • Actually Bel Canto very much focuses on the drama. Read about the greatest sopranos of the Bel Canto age, Pasta and Malibran. They were dramatic coloratura sopranos. Bellini's Norma and Imogene, Donizetti's Anna and Lucia....they aren't just tweeting birds.

  • my understanding is that Bel Canto focuses more on sounding beautiful and light whereas Versimo operas focus more on the drama....I could be wrong.

  • actually "dramatic coloratura" is a modern term. when pasta and malibran were singing, all singers were supposed to negotiate the so called "coloratura". but there were different styles of florid singing: di bravura, di maniera and di agilita`. pasta and malibran excelled in canto fiorito di bravura.

  • Brava Mariella!

Immensa!

  • I had the great fortune & pleasure to see a very young Mariella Devia perform in a concert prod. of Lakmé @ Carnegie Hall ca. 1980. It was her first NY performance and a revelatory experience - her transcendent voice produced a wild standing ovation & six passionate curtain calls from what is always a tough & discerning NY opera crowd.

anyone who has seen her sing knows her place in Opera's pantheon.

Lastly, I caution any who use a youtube video to form an opinion on an opera singers voice!

  • To each their own... we all like something different when it comes to singers, but to say that she "tried to be very different to be remembered" shows a fundamental misunderstanding on your own part. Devia di Lammermoor, as she was called, will be remembered as one of the great belcanto singers of our time. This was her signature role until she gave it up in 2006.

  • u put it in the best words

  • It's nothing wrong with trying to redefine music, especially when you have a very deep understanding of the music you're performing. Sorry if my comment annoyed anyone who's a Devia fan. In the end it all comes down to whether the music you hear gives you a thrill or not. Well, this one didn't to me, but I'm sure it did to a lot of people, and that's what matters.

  • I notice your comment is rather superficial. What do you mean " tried to be different"? Could you be more specific, from the musical point of view? Thanks.

  • @tuvaluhu when you say "I'll stick with Dessay" you loose all credibility.

  • @tuvaluhu VOICES NOT NECCESARILY HAVE TO BE BEAUTIFUL, READ YOUR TOLSTOY ON BEAUTY AND ART.

  • this is my favorite... she is awesome

  • This is:

    Luc"(DEV)IA DI LAMMERMOOR"....

  • her voice is much to heavy here. it sounds very mezzo.

  • tu déconnes à plein tube.

  • Devia is very good here. She kept me on the edge of my seat by singing with such a slow pace and then in the cabaletta, she seems to slowed down more! That was a bit annoying because I'm used to how Sutherland sings "Quando rapito in estasi" with the rapid pace all of the flourishing trills.

  • Brava!!!

  • Forget Sutherland, Callas, Netrebko and whoever else. Devia sung the hell out of this. I have yet to hear or see a singer this song with as much agility and beauty. This is by far the best version i have seen. Mariella Devia is the best!

  • @musoph21 Agree 100%

  • I have to agree with Rvt07. I have never this cavatina and cabaletta so exciting as in this production. The result of experience and a peerless Belcanto technique.

  • i personally think this is the best version of this song. The notes at the end are flawless. Especially the last high note!

  • I did not like it half as much as I liked her Mad Scene. I notice this is a later performance, and the voice is not quite as fresh and somewhat unsteady at times (not exactly a wobble, but close). The ornaments are brilliant enough if one does not search for comparisons with Sutherland, Sills, Pons, Tetrazzini. On the plus side, the musicianship is as good as ever, and she is certainly into the role. Just not as foreboding or brilliant as it probably once was.

  • Cosa si puo dire??? Grande Mariella, sei unica, grazie!

  • Mamma mia che bravura!!!!
