Lower elevations and those close to the ocean have thicker air and consistent mild winds making flying/learning easier (warm weather also helps). Then there's how much the cost of living is in the area. I would plan on $2000 for lessons but it will very. When ready you can get a used beginning glider & harness for under $2000 if you keep your (or your instructor/dealer's) eyes and ears open.

Think I got somewhere between 13 and 14,000ft in that flight. The day before was 17,999 ft!
