Not quite sure what Holmes fans were upset about. The great detective is played straight by Douglas Wilmer. The comedy revolves around his brother Wilder.I've been a Holmes fan myself for almost 57 yrs. & find nothing wrong with it.
Glorious!! Any chance you could put up the scene where they're putting on the party scene in Verdi's A Masked Ball? (the opera scene). I'd be eternally grateful!
This scene had me laughing to tears as a kid, when Wilder whipped the other fellow until his clothes were shreds and then they fight with the big glove and boot on top of the carriage...HILARIOUS!
"The film's title and premise are a joke referring to the little-known character of Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock Holmes' older brother, who was by both of their estimates a good deal smarter than Sherlock. "
Sherlock Holmes reduced to slapstick Mel Brooks they didn't care for and felt it disprespected the great man who for countless times, saved England. Hows that?
I guess it didn't matter to the fans. Could have been about Dr. Watson only, and I belive they would have complained because it's all connected to Holmes
True I suppose it's like Christians moaning about LIfe of Brian even though it's established at the start of the film that it's nothing to do with Jesus.

What I remember is that the Sherlock Holmes Society picketed and complained about this movie.
