  • I LOVE GRATEFUL DEAD HAT PINS!! GET YOURs at m e t a s p a c e . c o m

  • Love at first listen! My favorite Dead song. ;D

  • Happy Birthday Bobby! Your the best!

  • this is so awesome

  • 90s dead ==subprime dead

    Europe '72 is the shniznit-a--sam-snip-snap-bam!!!!!

  • 2:39 you hear a guy say louder. The band starts playing better.

  • 6 people are moving much too slow.

  • Way cool Europe 72 video, what a treat. Thanks to the filmer and poster and the Dead or being open to such venture by and for the faithful.

  • beautiful !

  • there aren't enough slower, versions of this with soaring vocals on youtube..

  • Great songwriting and they really jam. Something about being laid back and grooving with the rhythm. Also, they're not trying to be heavy, just singing a song like the troubadours they are. You can tell their roots are country, bluegrass and the blues. So refreshing after decades of pop groups trying to be something they can never be.

  • All around theglobe, headed west 4the best signenmind...

  • 6 ppl don't know Jack, n' ain't got no Straw...

saw em from '76 (77?) right up thru '95 RFK, June...

    keep twirlin' evryone ..!!!

  • 420 likes....no one change this haha

  • What's up with Bob taking all of the verse? Much of the joy in this song is Jerry and Bobby switching off lines(even on these early versions). It IS a story of two compadres on a shared adventure after all.

Too bad the music doesn't quite cue up on this clip.

  • 2:40 "louder" ? :)

  • Such an amazing group, I'm 24 years old from spain and I've discovered them recently, i'm telling everyone because everybody should listen to them.

I'm jealous of all of you guys who were there in the 70's. LONG LIVE GRATEFUL DEAD, LONG LIVE THE 70'S

  • @xarls not quite as jealous as i am of you being 24;). the 70's and 80's were a blast though!!

  • The best freaking rock-n-roll band ever assembled. Piggy was running down by this time, Keith was just ok, but hey, that rhythm guitar player was as good as it gets, Kreutzman was rock solid, Lesh was flat out a genius w/his own lines & tempos to add, & of course, the Master himself weaving his miraculous melodies and transcendant playing in, around, through, over, & under everyone else. Can't forget the great Hunter & then later Barlow lyrics. A world without the Grateful Dead is Unimaginable!

  • @skywoof7 beautifully put! wish i was as articulate...peace

  • @skywoof7 Keith was just ok? Thats a joke right? If you dont think hes the tits give One More Saturday Night(europe 72) a listen. Just ok...jesus.

  • awesome!

  • "Garcia = genius. Grateful Dead = bunch of Ringo Stars"

First half is right on, the second part is just a really bad comparison.

  • The sixties was the greatest decade ever. It brought about many great ones with lasting legacies.

  • I miss you, Dad. I remember all of the good times listening to music with you really, really loud. Those were the good, old, worry-free days. I love you so much! Now that you've departed from me, may you rest peacefully with your ma, pa, aunt, and Jerry Garcia up in heaven. August 1, 1961 - February 4, 2011.

  • XanatharEye :

"Garcia = genius. Grateful Dead = bunch of Ringo Stars"?

I guess that means they were pretty good, eh?

When the Beatles first formed, Ringo was the biggest celebrity in the group. He was known as one of the best rock & roll drummers on the Liverpool scene. Getting him in the band to replace Pete Best was a major coup, and it played a significant role in their early success.

    Y'can look it up.

  • I'm curious -- when did Jerry and Bobby start trading off the verses in this song? I've always really liked that theatrical sense of the two characters, Jack and Shannon, talking and signifying at other as they head toward their fate.

This show was in Europe, in 1972 -- on the "Europe '72" LP, Jerry and Bobby are arleady singing the two characters' parts. So I'm guessing that this is one of the last times when Weir sang it alone.

  • @jazzmanchgo FYI, they overdubbed the vocals on that album. Maybe that's when they decided to trade the lyric

  • Im glad i have them too. and i always will. forever the dead will live through me. I couldnt have it any other way. they bring the smile into my soul.

  • can't wait to hear the new boxset! Jerry's playing is on fire here!

  • 1:40 classic

  • jubilation

  • "We used to play for silver, now we play for lives."

Imagine what Jerry could have done with 5 fingers ...

  • @BluesHonkey don't think it would have made much a difference ;)

  • All your bass are belong to Phil.

  • @littlerattyratratrat damn right they are

  • @littlerattyratratrat what a playful twist on the common day lingo

  • @xanathareye why are you commenting on a video with bob weir doing the vocals if he sucks so much dont you have anything better to do than bash on a band that hasnt played in 15 years?

  • I am only just today getting into the Grateful Dead. I ripped all of my neighbors dead CD's do now I have 183 songs of their's. This is one of my favorite songs.

  • Xanathwhateverthefuk....you obviously dont know what the hell you are talking about...you dont have to like them....there are enough people who do...go and create something of your own...what instrument do you play anyway?...the washboard?

  • @XanatharEye You could not be more wrong my friend, sure Jerry was and will always be a legend. But the rest of the grateful dead were certainly not back-up players to Jerry. Phil and Bob are incredibly original musicians, no one can copy their sound. They led many jams just like Jerry did, and Weir was also a great songwriter.

  • @XanatharEye However you are....you know nothing....

  • @XanatharEye whoever you are...you know nothing

  • @smrosmarin Neither did Jerry. That's what made him great.

SHOCK!!!! a bunch of uptight Dead Head's are cynical about people not religiously devoted to their so-so music!!!!!

  • In the land of the dark the Ship of the Sun is driven by the Grateful Dead

  • @2get2Terrapin damn dude, you speak words of wisdom. I completely understand where your coming from!

  • @2get2Terrapin Let our chant fill the void, that others may know...

  • @2get2Terrapin In the Sea of Night the Ship of Light is Sailed by the Grateful Dead

  • @2get2Terrapin Ain't that the truth!

  • When the Grateful Dead are at their best, it's like their music is streaming down to us on a beam of sunlight coming out of the clouds, straight from heaven.

  • early dead (late 60's/early 70's) is my favorite period of their career

  • @RiverRat96 that's because they influenced the most people during that period. It's a cosmic thing, we came, we saw, we danced, and we went home and made some kind of a difference. Some of us made a big difference, some of us made small ones, but a difference we did make.

  • when are they going to release these Europe shows on dvd, cmon now

  • Every time I watch this video I wonder why Phil is cracking up.

  • @Lisica2008 Haha cause the man was tripping his face off

  • Excellent. Also see youtube.com/watch?v=IxdT1mXrqUA

  • I just killed a watch man

  • I have heard people referencing my name to some hippie song. Now I found what they are talking about. I AM Jack Straw. That has been my given Christian name for 56 years now. I have lived in Wichita KS my entire life, and I have never "shot my buddy down". I repair appliances. It's a honest living. I've never shot anyone in my life. I am curious to know the origins of this song. I DO know there is an English politician with my same name, and from what I can gather, he IS a fucking crook.

  • @jackstrawfrmwchta hi-i like your story-interesting and i hope you find the origin-i'm a 50 year old lady in pa and i would actually be proud if a beautiful song like this from the grateful dead accidentally had my name. best of luck and wishes to you, jack straw-chris

  • This is a top 5 GD song of mine... the versions played throughout 1977 (like so many others) are the best even tho I like all of em!!

I prefer Jerry doing "Shannon's" vocals like they switched to permanently... (i just jumped the watchman, gotta go to Tulsa...) just my 2 cents :)

    Jam on DH'z

  • Happy 68th birthday jerry!

  • Bob and Jerry at their peak vocally

  • we can smoke what we have of yours couse we done smoked all of mine.

  • bob weir spit on me. only deadheads will get that

  • @freepatriot1776 i envy you lol

  • All these videos are out of synch.

  • Yep that's Keith.I always loved Keith's acoustic piano in the band

  • @68BBumble

This must've been one of Keith's first shows... didn't Pigpen play up until April '72?? Why no Donna?

  • @bobshenix Keith started with the band in october 71 I don't think Donna was with them on the europe tour ,not sure tho. Dunno when Pig stopped performing with them ,he died in March 73

  • Is that keith?

  • @pigpen7852

    yep. good eye.

  • This is when Phil could sing

  • @thebigqster phil can still sing(sort of)

  • who wrote this song?

  • @coltboyd

    the man, the legend...robert hunter

  • @coltboyd Actually, I think Jack Straw is a Weir/Barlow composition....

  • @jefferzone61: Nope, this is one of the last songs Weir wrote with Hunter.

  • THANK YOUUUUU

  • always miss them when summer rolls around...great clip...Jerry on a Strat!

  • Great recording.Makes me really miss following the tour.

  • phil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • took his rings , 4 bucks n change

  • Grateful Dead = melhor banda da historia do mundo !!!

  • kruetzman looks younger now than he did then. jerry's tone is brilliance.

  • what a bad ass song!

  • Is it my imagination or are their voices really strong and on key? Awesome!!

  • the whole Europe 72' tour was incredible i 72-77 was deffinatly the prime of the dead

  • I guess there was no mickey at this show.

  • ...we can share what we got of yours, cuz we done shared all of mine....

  • @AndyAutomaticss early 70's is my favorite time era to listen to when it comes to the Grateful Dead

  • awesome song, and probably the best version.

phil gettin sick wit it and lookin like a turtle.

  • Sounds so sweet!! Nice quality too, thanks for posting!

  • Flawless. Most Heads swear by 77 but I'll take 71-72 all day. You guys should check out Furthur if they come close. It might not be the same, but it's still pretty damn good.

  • @TheGodfather4200 i agree...77 had some real good shows, but their overall style had become kinda sterile sounding by that point, and it just got more so later on

  • UN-F-ing-Believeable!

  • Truly one of a kind. Another will be a long time coming.

Glad we had them in my lifetime.

  • @eslmc the way music is rolling today i dont see another band like these guys for a while, we are thankful to have such great "jam bands" these days. even though most of the best jammy bands are broken up now.

  • One of my favorites!

  • we can share the women, we can share the WINE!

  • My very favorite Dead song. My 19th year was spent traveling up and down the west coast seeing all the Grateful Dead shows with my best gal Carissa.....Saw Jerry in Hawaii too.....One of the happiest years I've had. Very Grateful for the experience!

  • Spherian7 has got it right with respect to Kreutzman. I really preferred this band over all lineups. Had it all but remained light and agile. The single drummer kept things nice, quick, and snappy...

I like that. The peak of this band's right here. Garcia was still fine fiddle and his voice hadn't really gone yet. He was still singing.

So too Weir, who hadn't yet lost his range and gone all raspy.

  • @bendbadgersteve

this really is the greatest period...and pig was still around to boot...

but billy has to be one of the most unrecognized drummers outside the dead world...i feel like people should know his name a lot more

  • The Europe '72 tour was truly one of the greatest musical episodes of all time. Note that this is after Mickey Hart had left the band, and Billy K had undegone training in self-hynosis so he could keep up with the band's developing cosmic abilities. His style became a jazz rock orientation that proved him the best drummer of all bands. The level of smooth interaction was lost when Mickey returned which forced a kind of Budweiser mule team approach to the backbeat, ending the quintet-type magic.

  • Uhh You kind of lost me at " developing cosmic abilities".....but I can't say I disagree ;-), Billy K was, and still is, absolutely out of this world!

  • @volcom1551 hey ben

  • haha Budweiser mule team approach to the backbeat....that is an outstanding description.

  • Lesh is more.

  • further

  • Anybody heard the Jack Straw from Texas on the 4th of July.

Just too good to be true for Bobby--he blew THE line!! Bet ole

Jer got a good laugh outta that one!

  • Gotta love this song from the Dead.

You can say what you want about Jerry Garcia. The man could rock!!!

    the dj

  • Wow! Love this song and what a great show. Love the way they use dynamics from section to section.

  • great!!! :)

  • truely awsome!!

  • rare instance of this song with bobby singing the whole thing

  • 1:40-1:45 enough said

  • Bob weir is god!

  • @umwolverines2316 He's good but.....

  • @umwolverines2316

check out Furthur on Brown Eyed Women at Nokia Theater 7/28/10 Bob Weirdo at his finest!!!

  • i miss Jerry so much.. it just seems that the world grew a little darker and a little colder without him...

  • Jer's line at 0:52 is so beautiful. He plays it a little different, a little more syncopated than usual. It's wonderful!

  • jerrys notes just flow upside out and inside down allll night, epic show

  • this, among many other nights, was the deads peak, its crazy as a lead guitarist in a dead trib. how they can play like this dosed beyond reality, ive taken my shot at it before andonce strings start melting to your sandals its all over.. the best band there will ever be, long live the magic of the gd... as well as those who made the magic happen from below the stage. they played off there fans, the energy traded back and forth to bring on a level of cosmic craziness. ohh, the grateful dead....

  • "Hurts my ears to listen, Shannon, burns my eyes to see, cut down a man in cold blood...

    might as well be me....."

    Killer tune.

"Used to play for silver, now we play for life."

"You don't go home with all".

"Ain't a place a man can hide to keep him from the sun, ain't a bed can give us rest none..

You keep us on the run..."

  • here's to you, Ro-Lew - my dead buddy, one of your faves!

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I had forgotten how great the Dead were in this era. The Keith Godchaux era is the best imho.

  • i sorda know shannon from zoltaire...and i met jack...small world eh charlie?...and who's cassidy?

  • still my favorite

  • your a dick

  • no offense to the grateful dead, the song and the recording probably doesn't do them justice.

  • notice it's 1972, and there really was no good video taping equipment back then, unless you were a pro. one band that didn't care if people taped their shows, or video them.. no problem.'

  • for the dead its about the music not the bucks yout right

  • Hey who's the lead guitarist on the left? He's pretty good.

  • jerom john garcia AKA. jerry garcia the best guitarist and singer on earth

  • I RAISE ENFLAMED TO CONCUR WITH THE RIGHT HONORABLE CASEYJONES. CAPTAINTRIPS.......ONCE THE SOLO/aND OR JERRY WHIPP'N IT OUT...the peals....this is why we arrived however we had tol

  • long shot but does anyone have a Jack Straw vid from Highgate VT 7.13.94?

now THAT"S a Jack freaking Straw!!!

  • Note that Bob sings all the verses including "I just jumped a watchman ..." and "Gotta go to Tulsa ...". This had changed to Jerry by the time of the Europe '72 recording (May 3).
