Great songwriting and they really jam. Something about being laid back and grooving with the rhythm. Also, they're not trying to be heavy, just singing a song like the troubadours they are. You can tell their roots are country, bluegrass and the blues. So refreshing after decades of pop groups trying to be something they can never be.
What's up with Bob taking all of the verse? Much of the joy in this song is Jerry and Bobby switching off lines(even on these early versions). It IS a story of two compadres on a shared adventure after all.
Too bad the music doesn't quite cue up on this clip.
The best freaking rock-n-roll band ever assembled. Piggy was running down by this time, Keith was just ok, but hey, that rhythm guitar player was as good as it gets, Kreutzman was rock solid, Lesh was flat out a genius w/his own lines & tempos to add, & of course, the Master himself weaving his miraculous melodies and transcendant playing in, around, through, over, & under everyone else. Can't forget the great Hunter & then later Barlow lyrics. A world without the Grateful Dead is Unimaginable!

I miss you, Dad. I remember all of the good times listening to music with you really, really loud. Those were the good, old, worry-free days. I love you so much! Now that you've departed from me, may you rest peacefully with your ma, pa, aunt, and Jerry Garcia up in heaven. August 1, 1961 - February 4, 2011.
"Garcia = genius. Grateful Dead = bunch of Ringo Stars"?
I guess that means they were pretty good, eh?
When the Beatles first formed, Ringo was the biggest celebrity in the group. He was known as one of the best rock & roll drummers on the Liverpool scene. Getting him in the band to replace Pete Best was a major coup, and it played a significant role in their early success.
I'm curious -- when did Jerry and Bobby start trading off the verses in this song? I've always really liked that theatrical sense of the two characters, Jack and Shannon, talking and signifying at other as they head toward their fate.
This show was in Europe, in 1972 -- on the "Europe '72" LP, Jerry and Bobby are arleady singing the two characters' parts. So I'm guessing that this is one of the last times when Weir sang it alone.
Im glad i have them too. and i always will. forever the dead will live through me. I couldnt have it any other way. they bring the smile into my soul.
@xanathareye why are you commenting on a video with bob weir doing the vocals if he sucks so much dont you have anything better to do than bash on a band that hasnt played in 15 years?
I am only just today getting into the Grateful Dead. I ripped all of my neighbors dead CD's do now I have 183 songs of their's. This is one of my favorite songs.

Bob Weir is crap, this band was all Jerry, Lesh, and Pigpen. Lesh was irreplaceable, but still only pretty good, it was Lesh's and Wier's interactions with Jerry that make them worth anything as musicians. Garcia = genius. Grateful Dead = bunch of Ringo Stars
@XanatharEye You could not be more wrong my friend, sure Jerry was and will always be a legend. But the rest of the grateful dead were certainly not back-up players to Jerry. Phil and Bob are incredibly original musicians, no one can copy their sound. They led many jams just like Jerry did, and Weir was also a great songwriter.
When the Grateful Dead are at their best, it's like their music is streaming down to us on a beam of sunlight coming out of the clouds, straight from heaven.
@RiverRat96 that's because they influenced the most people during that period. It's a cosmic thing, we came, we saw, we danced, and we went home and made some kind of a difference. Some of us made a big difference, some of us made small ones, but a difference we did make.
I have heard people referencing my name to some hippie song. Now I found what they are talking about. I AM Jack Straw. That has been my given Christian name for 56 years now. I have lived in Wichita KS my entire life, and I have never "shot my buddy down". I repair appliances. It's a honest living. I've never shot anyone in my life. I am curious to know the origins of this song. I DO know there is an English politician with my same name, and from what I can gather, he IS a fucking crook.
@jackstrawfrmwchta hi-i like your story-interesting and i hope you find the origin-i'm a 50 year old lady in pa and i would actually be proud if a beautiful song like this from the grateful dead accidentally had my name. best of luck and wishes to you, jack straw-chris

@eslmc the way music is rolling today i dont see another band like these guys for a while, we are thankful to have such great "jam bands" these days. even though most of the best jammy bands are broken up now.
My very favorite Dead song. My 19th year was spent traveling up and down the west coast seeing all the Grateful Dead shows with my best gal Carissa.....Saw Jerry in Hawaii too.....One of the happiest years I've had. Very Grateful for the experience!
Spherian7 has got it right with respect to Kreutzman. I really preferred this band over all lineups. Had it all but remained light and agile. The single drummer kept things nice, quick, and snappy...
I like that. The peak of this band's right here. Garcia was still fine fiddle and his voice hadn't really gone yet. He was still singing.
So too Weir, who hadn't yet lost his range and gone all raspy.
The Europe '72 tour was truly one of the greatest musical episodes of all time. Note that this is after Mickey Hart had left the band, and Billy K had undegone training in self-hynosis so he could keep up with the band's developing cosmic abilities. His style became a jazz rock orientation that proved him the best drummer of all bands. The level of smooth interaction was lost when Mickey returned which forced a kind of Budweiser mule team approach to the backbeat, ending the quintet-type magic.
Uhh You kind of lost me at " developing cosmic abilities".....but I can't say I disagree ;-), Billy K was, and still is, absolutely out of this world!
this, among many other nights, was the deads peak, its crazy as a lead guitarist in a dead trib. how they can play like this dosed beyond reality, ive taken my shot at it before andonce strings start melting to your sandals its all over.. the best band there will ever be, long live the magic of the gd... as well as those who made the magic happen from below the stage. they played off there fans, the energy traded back and forth to bring on a level of cosmic craziness. ohh, the grateful dead....
notice it's 1972, and there really was no good video taping equipment back then, unless you were a pro. one band that didn't care if people taped their shows, or video them.. no problem.'
I RAISE ENFLAMED TO CONCUR WITH THE RIGHT HONORABLE CASEYJONES. CAPTAINTRIPS.......ONCE THE SOLO/aND OR JERRY WHIPP'N IT OUT...the peals....this is why we arrived however we had tol
Note that Bob sings all the verses including "I just jumped a watchman ..." and "Gotta go to Tulsa ...". This had changed to Jerry by the time of the Europe '72 recording (May 3).
Bobby right in the pocket as always. Phil is having way too much fun at 3:38. The Dead at the top of their game, never get tired of this wonderful concert.

notice it's 1972, and there really was no good video taping equipment back then, unless you were a pro. one band that didn't care if people taped their shows, or video them.. no problem.'

Happy to have somebody like Bill on drums, so that he can improvise without missing a beat.

Bill is still the best drummer I've ever heard or seen.
