I'm a Yankee fan who hated the Brooklyn Dodgers. But I have to admit that The Duke was as dangerous a hitter as anyone of his time. Especially against right-handed pitchers at Ebbets Field.
I remember listening to the Duke on the Montreal Expos broadcasts for 14 years, he had a great voice and worked great with TV broadcast partner Dave Van Horne. Duke will always be part of my childhood memories as I was such an Expos fan. Thanks Duke.
"Willie ,Mickey and the Duke"..during his playing days he really faced fierce competition from his crosstown rivals, Mays was a five tool player, Mantle a consistant home run threat , surpassing the career seasom home run season total of 61 in '61. Snider excelled in many aspects on a team with a loyal following, and did it in a very dignified manner, alas "The Duke of Flatbush". I will never forget my physicians look on his face when mentioning the Duke, and how great an athlete he was.
MY CHILDHOOD IDOL, I HAD TO HAVE THE #4 NO MATTER WHAT SPORT I PLAYED. BASEBALL MY FAVORITE, HE ALONG WITH MY DAD GOT ME TO LOVE THE GAME, PLAYED IN HIGH SCHOOL AND IN THE ARMY, KEPT ME FROM GOING TO NAM. SPECIAL SERVICES, MAY HAVE SAVED MY LIFE. tHANK YOU DUKE.
I was his care giver before he passed Im so blessed that i was able to meet him &his wife Bev.They were the sweetest people ever im glad hes in hevan now It was his time and now hes with the Lord I will never forget when he kissed my hand to let me know that he was glad i was there since he couldnt realy speak. He did have an amazing life&i am glad to have spent his last moments with him making him smile and letting him know someone was there<3 Rip dukey always in my heart

I like Duke but I sure wish Gil Hodges could get into the Hall with the other Dodger infielders Robinson, Snider, Reese, and Campy. He is my favorite Dodger player because of his outstanding character and integrity and his contributions to the game of baseball.
Growing up in New York in the '50s you rooted for one of the three teams. I was a rabid Giants fan and my favorite played (to this day) was Willie Mays. I HATED the Dodgers. HATED THEM! I wouldn't walk across the street to get Reese's or Robinson's autograph. Having said that, there wasn't a finer player...and a finer man...than Duke Snider, a true sportsman in every sense of the word.
graceful center fielder with a picture-perfect swing, Duke Snider was the biggest bat in the Brooklyn Dodgers' potent lineup of the 1950s. He hit 40 or more homers five consecutive times and led all batters in home runs and RBIs during the '50s. The Duke of Flatbush hit four homers in two different World Series (1952 and '55), clouting a total of 11 Series home runs and 26 Series RBIs.
I think Duke is one of the most underrated players of all time and someone who deserves alot more credit than what he gets. And this is coming from a Mantle fan. If not for a bad knee that hindered him the last six years or so of his carrer and war time at the beginning of his career, Duke may have hit 500 homers. Even so, his career stats are very nice - 407 HR, 1,333 RBIs, .295 avg., 2,116 hits. and as mentioned before, he hit more homes in the 1950's than anyone - more than Mantle and Mays
There was a two hour special that ran on HBO a few months ago. It had all to do with the Brooklyn Dodgers and their eventual World Series victory.
I don't know if this is the film mentioned at the beginning of this video, but if it is, I recommend that ALL see it. It was done in such a way that 50 years later, it'll still tug at your heart with d'em bums!!!
Back in December 1966 I was working at Eddie Pulaski's Barber Shop in NYC as the shoeshine boy during the christmas recess from high school...and Duke came in to get his hair colored in (If you remember, Duke was in the TV commercials for "Great Day Hair Color" back then) anyhow, I shined his shoes that day!
not Duke THE DUKE!!
