My favourite song from that awesome band. The seagulls echoing the rythm of the solo at the end is just something... so amazing! give me the chills and reminds me why I love rock and roll so much. What a band dudes, what a band.
This song was written by Burke @ 16 years old. That's why it has that feeling and it is a masterpiece. Budgie's 1st Seven albums, all with mixed reviews but all quality music on each. All different. Such a shame that they had to wait for Metallica to introduce them to the world. Us, in the midwest, already loved them. San Antonio already loved them. Shitty DJ's didn't pick up on it. This is one of the best of the 70's and they will never be recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame .
@metalmaho Well said, this song is amazing..All Budgies songs are great..Rock-n-Roll hall of shame sucks..Rush has not been enducted yet..Rush has a empire...Peaceout
Solid drumming is perfect - this song makes my cry - because it speaks of my parents but mainly because I fell in love with it at that impressionable age - 14 - 15 - oh and the seagull sounds!
@TheJanvinyl The Drumming on here is Ray Phillips, that was his style. I've seen Budgie gig this one with both Steve Williams and John Simpson on the kit, and Ray Phillips do it with his own bands Tredgar and Six Ton Budgie, and yeah Mr Phillips does tend to hold back on the cymbals, but thats his style.
ah but dear reader, it was a time of great change, some parents feared our new culture, our new ways. some warned us not to take this step into searching for ourselves, expanding our minds, searching for love and peace, something our parents didnt get much of. i am a parent myself and would be scared sh****ess if my daughter got up to half of what i did back then, be not too hard on each other.
This band were my introduction to rock, "Guts" and "Nude disintegrating parachutist woman" about 1972,
It's 1980 and I'm in a rugby club rock disco, just outside of Cardiff, Burke appears wearing an AC DC T shirt, I proceed to take the piss, saying he should be wearing a Budgie shirt or at least Led Zeppelin, he laughed and chatted to us for a while, I even asked him for Bass lessons, which he politely declined.
Very nice guy and superb band, saw them more than a few times
Everyone in every phase of history says that about the time their in, everything before was exciting and alive, now is shit, it's not but you're one of those that will have to look back to see it.
@Floatles The 70's were depressing because a lot of young people were doing heroin, there was a real economic hardship and old conservative ways were clashing with the industrial times. A lot of people went from the country into the cities or immigrated.
THAT WAS THE ERA OF THE MID EAST OIL EMBARGO AND GETTING A GOOD JOB IS NOT EASY. AND THE AMERICAN GI'S WERE COMING BY THE DOZENS TO THAILAND N ENJOY DRUGS, THE LOCALS HERE GOT INSPIRED TOO. BUT THIS SONG REALLY BRINGS THEM GI'S MEMORIES OF MUM N DAD BACK HOME.
i know this band as my dad used to live a down the street from them in cardiff and watch them play. i love this band <3 one of the best guitar players ever
@Floatles I don't see the 70's as even remotely depressing? The 70s contributed some of the greatest music of the century. It was a time of revival, and outspoken youth. The country was changing and life was actually exciting and had depth. I think the time we're in now is fucking depressing... Music sucks and people are becoming more detached from reality, society, and just plain life because of technology. People rather stare at a cell phone then have a conversation...Now that's depressing!
@Ddubya77 Lol, we're just changing again. I bet people in the 70s thought their time was depressing too. People are always unhappy because the past looks better, the present sucks and the future is not decided. So give it up already, because life was just as depressing and fucked up and full of conflicts and crap back then as it is now.
@Skjoldvall Your so wrong..I'll tell why?Autism up 600%..Obesity is at a all time high!!Kids as young as 12.bring guns to school to kill as many kids and teachers as they can! Then they kill themselves..Are food is farmed by corps who put antibiotics and hormones in your food,,no more small private farms..The government is more of a police state than ever!!They strip search you just to fly on a plane!Job security is a extinct idea!Children now take meds for discipline! Those are a few examples..

@mdelair420 I am not angry. I am completely and entirely aware of how fucked up our world is today. All I'm saying is it was just as fucked up 50 years ago. Was in SA when i first listened to Budgie. Want to say thanks to Mark Tothill for getting me to listen to them. This band is so good wish there were more live videos of them
@movadoband Ok. Lets make one!!!! Because my friend we were blessed with this music FOREVER. When i listen to this music its like im stoned with the sweetest leaf of all time: Music Poetry. This divides us form animals and makes as bodies full of soul and emotions. The road goes ever on. Be blessed my brother / sister!!!
I am so glad I got to see alot of these bands in the begining. I have memories that no one can possibly imagine.. I am glad that you yonger people are listening to thistuff cause it lets me know that I haven't lost my mind..I grew up in Cleveland , Ohio in the late 60's early 70's and every group came there..............and i was too! Got to seem them ALL!
I was introduced to Budgie by a teacher aid in H/S. We would drive around in his chevy Chevette, $T0#& out of our minds and just trip. Lived in S.A. TX. and listened to the Godfather all night long!!!!!! Canadian bands ruled back then. Leggs Diamond Rocked!!!!!!! ...... yeah they were'nt from canada but still!!!!!
I was introduced to Budgie by a teacher aid in H/S. We would drive around in his chevy Chevette, $T0#& out of our minds and just trip. Lived in S.A. TX. and listened to the Godfather all night long!!!!!! Canadian bands ruled back then.
His voice is really unique. It makes everything sound powerful and deeply melancholic at the same time. I just discovered them two years ago, bought "In for the kill" in a Thrift Store, and recommend them to everyone I know ever since (not always succesful!).
@Anemonicus Some people say to me "How influential can a band be if you never hear about them?"The thing though is that most musicians have heard of most of the creators of their genre. In reallity Budgie is more influential in the creation of metal than Metallica, besides the music Metallica influenced aside from a few were either mediocre or garbage; that is for the most part, there are exeptions. Metallica is a good band don't get me wrong, but in terms of influence not as much as people think.
i first heard this track in the summer of 1976 in a friends car coming back from a Queen gig in Edinburgh i had never heard of Budgie untill then. I can remember being speachless after hearing it...... one of the most astonishing bits of music i have ever heard then and now. Thanks Burke what a talent you are.
@angee577 a czy wtey wiedzialas ze to bedzie najlepszy czas ? napewno obiecywalas sobie wiecej ! a tu taka lipa wszystko co dobre bylo wczoraj....... kiedys to nawet kielbasa lepiej smakowala...
I got nothing against Metallica, but I do think Budiges singers voice is soooo unique and excellent overall! I dont think anyone, Metallica or whomever, can seriously cover Budgies songs :)
This was such a fantastic band. These lyrics really hit home when I was 13 or 14.

His voice is really unique. It makes everything sound powerful and deeply melancholic at the same time. I just discovered them two years ago, bought "In for the kill" in a Thrift Store, and recommend them to everyone I know ever since (not always succesful!).

First time I heard about Budgie was while reading Mustaine's biography
just his reaction to their music made want to listen to it. lemme quote the man himself :
"It was like nothing I'd ever heard";
I had quite the same words in my mind when I listened to the first record

@Anemonicus Some people say to me "How influential can a band be if you never hear about them?"The thing though is that most musicians have heard of most of the creators of their genre. In reallity Budgie is more influential in the creation of metal than Metallica, besides the music Metallica influenced aside from a few were either mediocre or garbage; that is for the most part, there are exeptions. Metallica is a good band don't get me wrong, but in terms of influence not as much as people think.
