  • This is a performance. Is the body not just as beautiful artistically as the piano? The entire package, pianist and piano makes up the performance. Why are some of you so bothered by a beautiful woman? its really pathetic. Grow up.

  • "O-V-E-R-C-O-M-P-E-N-S-A-T-I-O-N"

  • Relaxar, surfando ondas de nuvens...

  • she got nice body shape >.<

  • Well, to be honest, she's a good player but she can't touch Richter or Horowitz. However, in all fairness, I don't want to fuck them. ;)

  • Those "mature listeners", who couldnt play chopsticks if their lives depended on it, use the same irrelevancy to describe Lola Astanova. Usually when they resort to fashion critique, it means the music was good, they just hate to admit it was performed by someone more attractive and talented than themselves. Pay no mind.

  • speechless !

  • what not there to like?

  • 0:51 - 0:59 was absolutely soul lifting

  • shes probably going clubbin after this.

  • I'd like to lick her from head to toe - so what's the big deal with that? She is aware that all the non-ghey men in the audience want to bang her, and she's diggin' it. Flaunt it while you've got it, baby!

  • If you dislike the dress you're probably ghey.

  • No. I didn't see the orange number, but anyone who gets to have a Hollywood Bowl performance could probably wear anything! Maybe she now considers herself a pop star and we all know what THEY wear!!! Let's hope she doesn't resort to bikinis!!

  • Good grief! Stop the bantering over clothes!! In other performances she has worn perfectly 'appropriate' dresses. Thank society for promoting short skirts as normal. Can you allow her one mistake for 'bad taste'?! Did you ever stop and listen to her play?

  • @tennotes Actually I'm not so sure that she's worn "perfectly 'appropriate' dresses" for her other performances. I think she's made more than one mistake for her 'bad taste' in fashion too. Have you seen the orange number she wore at the Hollywood bowl performance? Seems to me that her dress sense is guided by two incentives:

    1) Showing more skin.

    2) Wearing brighter colors.

  • anyone critiquing her dress obviously cant play piano as well as her

  • Her physical beauty and the beauty of her music perfectly compliment each other. Yuja is a treat for more than one of the senses.

  • The hooker dress and Scriabin just don't go together. Apparently good taste in music doesn't imply good taste in clothes.

  • @jimtrueblue99

    "The hooker dress"

It's rather sad how you immediately associate a short skirt with "hooker attire" (the stereotypical "hookers" are known for wearing really slutty, colorful fishnet type of stuff, that makes them look like a wrapped-up present) - tells more about you than anything else.

  • @twooffour What this tells me about you is that you have no concept of appropriate dress or modesty. The concert hall is not a hook-up bar; a mode of dress found in a cocktail lounge is not appropriate for a recital. If you and Ms. Wang can't resist the urge to display your thighs, then do so elsewhere and not on the concert stage.

  • @jimtrueblue99

Don't try to divert attention - you called it "hooker dress", not simply "inappropriate", and that's what I objected against.

Having that said, I do have a concept of SOME OTHERS deem "inappropriate", but I may not necessarily share their views.

So while you may consider this inappropriate, I may have different standards and view *your* standards as being "stuck-up". I could also say that you should refrain from watching or attending concerts the participants (or audience)...

  • @jimtrueblue99

... of which makes you feel uncomfortable, instead of berating them and their audience who have no problem with that.

Could I say that? I could. Actually I do.

See, you may view such attire as "belonging strictly in cocktail lounges", but I've seen me countless female jazz singers in "decent" jazz clubs, and while I do get that jazz crooner music is inherently more focused on sex-appeal and charm (mainly of the singer), it's one of the reasons why I simply don't care.

  • @twooffour You don't simply have different values; you lack a sense of propriety and place. Why not have Ms. Wang play in bra and panties? Or bra-less and panty-less? Modesty in dress is sign of respect and consideration for other people who might not share your need to exhibit your body parts in their faces and don't care to spend an evening inspecting your anatomy. Ever hear of courtesy? Manners? And yes, it's hooker dress; not so long ago only hookers would wear such in public.

  • @jimtrueblue99

"You don't simply have different values; you lack a sense of propriety and place."

    Why?

    Here's why:

"Why not have Ms. Wang play in bra and panties? Or bra-less and panty-less?"

It's about where you draw the line. I draw the line somewhere between "decent, short evening dress / everyday clothing with shorts" and "campy hooker outfit / (half)naked".

And by that, I don't mean I'd get my panties in my bunch if that happened, but I woudn't consider it "normal" anymore.

  • @jimtrueblue99

As far as I'm concerned, the attire she's wearing here is still in the "normal" category.

So it's not about "lacking" some basic instict, er, I mean sensibility, it's about where you draw the line, and THAT's directly tied to "differing values".

Got it, or do you need an even smaller spoon?

"not so long ago only hookers would wear such in public."

What an IDIOTIC statement. How long ago?

It sure wasn't the 60s. Not even the 50s.

What are we talking here, 19th century?

  • Come on. Fuck...

    "Ever hear of courtesy? Manners?"

Hey, how about old men who can't look at a woman's underarms without getting, um, "uncomfortable", or want them all to dress in black or they can't focus on the music anymore, do you show those courtesy? Manners? Respect!! What do you believe in??

Oh wait, that's still "normal" in your book. Well, this is in mine, and in my eyes you're a stuck-up twit with a stick up the wrong place. But at least I get the logical side of this. You do not.

  • @twooffour I'm not interested in your book because your book has "Me me me--it's all about me--look at me" written on every page. Courtesy, manners, modesty, regard for others, and dignity may be alien to you but not to me. If your vision of yourself is as a sexual commodity needing to be leered at, go for it. They sell all sorts of cheap things these days.

  • "your book has "Me me me--it's all about me--look at me" written on every page"

Well, considering how anyone not sharing YOUR particular tastes is a "proletarian who has no concept of courtesy", so is yours apparently ;)

"Courtesy, manners, modesty, regard for others, and dignity may be alien to you but not to me."

I've been waiting for the definitive proof that you definitely can't read it, and look what we've got here.

That, or you're a dishonest strawman-shooter - which is hardly better.

  • @jimtrueblue99

So while I can't declare you an idiot for where you draw the line according to your tastes, I certainly can with regard to your general argumentation quality. Congrats!

  • @jimtrueblue99

So this one finally figured out how to shut up. Progress of a kind!

  • @twooffour Excuse me? I said what I had to say. Evidently you're the type who needs the last word no matter how dopey that word is. So have at it. Post something quick. Anything will do. Just hold down one of the keys on your computer keyboard for a few seconds if you can't think of anything sensible. That might be an improvement.

  • @jimtrueblue99

The thing is, what you "had to say" was fallacious and stupid, and when your malformed ideas are rebuked by someone else, calling that "dopey" won't help your case -

what it'll succeed at, though, is filling me with glee. ;)

    So I believe we're done.

  • @twooffour You're full of something but "glee" is not the word I would use.

  • @jimtrueblue99

Nah, it's glee. An appropriate word to describe an appropriate emotion.

  • @jimtrueblue99

I don't consider this "inappropriate", and I may even fail to notice.

And, of course, the good thing is, I can stand on top of a hill and look down at anyone finding this kind of thing "distracting" ;)

(And oh, male thighs shouldn't be "displayed" without a significant portion of irony, as far as I'm concerned. You may feel differently, I'm not judgin')

  • I've seen more curves on a telephone pole.

  • Personally, I would never let my daughter play piano to a hall filled with old ppl looking like that!

  • What is this? Her apparel is appalling, and having to explain why and how just enforces how twisted my generation is.

  • The music was amazing.she looked HOT! and played it with passion.Made me feel good to be alive. All humans can appreciate beauty!this is just beautiful in more ways then a classical musician is used to

  • If you could be a sex symbol and a world-famous virtuoso pianist, why not.

Why not also be a secret agent and wear a silly hat and drink Krug? You will if you can.

Wang has 30 years in the future where she can be a crone all bent over like Sokolov and be valued solely for her music.

  • IIMMMMMMM HOOORRNNYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

  • lmao I love how this video just showing you how stuck up and arrogant a large amount of concert music people are to undermine her on a dress. Her music is pretty damn goood thats all that counts for me.

  • yes! Wang gets in the way...of the music

  • You excessively critical "connoisseurs" really ought to get over yourselves. And the so-called male who complains about her "overly sexualized appearance" is, well, just plain laughable. You're not gettin' any, buddy -- admit it. Some of you people would find fault -- and seek political correctness -- in just about anything.

  • You are horribly, horribly wrong. Seriously. There have been far too many attempts in the classical recording business to sell attractive females as artists that have failed. Linda Lampenius for example who was re-packaged as a lad mag model - rank and file violinist at best.

There is precedent and good reason to be wary of such things. Secondly, this is a concert hall and asking that a professional musician dresses modestly is surely not asking too much?

  • @SJM1977

Getting to the matter, Ms Wang is simply not at the standard suggested. For a 'super-virtuoso' she is nowhere near the standards of Volodos, Marc Andre Hamelin, Beresovsky or others. Not even close. Her mainstream performances are nowhere near the standards of the genuine artists, eg. Perahia, Zimmerman, Uchida, etc.

Perhaps, the last option of her record company is using sex to sell...

  • @SJM1977 You have a point in that Yuja absolutely is nowhere near the "virtuoso" she is marketed as being. Best explanation I can come up with is she is the female equivalent of Lang Lang and is pushed by the same record label :-((

Having said that being attractive and having beauty should NOT be used to critique a woman pianist. There are extraordinary pianists who perform with immense beauty inside and outside, and with surreal musicality, notably Martha Argerich and Jung Lin :-))

  • @SJM1977

"There is precedent and good reason to be wary of such things."

The question is, can one tell bad playing from good playing even when your senses are assaulted in this way, or is the "attraction" an automatic sign of badness, because others are known to exploit it?

  • @bleegableega No, no... I'm getting laid. Wang's Prok. Sonata 6 is unbeatable and my favorite piece of music-- and ass-- ever. Wang presents herself as a sexualized virtuoso, which she is.I don't think anyone should be blamed for not being into that, but if you enjoy that ass along with perfect performances of several pieces, shouldn't be called a pervert for doing so-- that's obviously what she wants.

  • Technically perfect ... She never misses a note. however, maybe it's the tinny sound of that Steinway or or something about the recording ... but it's not working for me. Maybe it would come across differently live....

  • To everyone fussing about Yuja's dress: Yes, she's clearly very pretty and has nice legs. How could that possibly take away from the music? Why wouldn't you want to listen to beautiful music and also watch it played by a beautiful person? Whenever I watch any person playing piano, I watch their entire body, their face, and their hands. I'm not ashamed to admit that I do look at her legs when she's playing. The fact that she has nice legs is an added bonus to what is already gorgeous playing.

  • For me, she could even play nude :-)

  • Excellent post. By the way the music is good too.

  • All she is doing is asking the men in the audience to multitask - look and listen and keep both treads alive in your mind.

  • Perhaps for some but I was already looking for Scriabin... but I see your point haha

  • She doesn't know it yet, but she's actually my future wife!

  • I do understand that yes, the dress is a little out of place, but I find it interesting that nobody makes these comments when it comes to some famous female singer who is barely wearing even a dress. Doesn't her lack of clothing also take away from her music? Interesting...

  • @allaroundfunny1 Pop music is very image-driven, so it comes with the territory. Not so with classical.

  • of course we men watch this for the beauty of the music. AS IF!

  • Never had I been so aroused and wowed by a pianist at the same time.

  • So emotional and perfect, like a lovely spring-dream. But as dreams are: Unfathomable, inaccesible, another world. We stand here and look up. Distances as they are between a tramp and a milliardaire. But the tramp has stopped to look up.

  • she should be facing the audience.

  • @yousurfer2 and taxi drivers should be facing their passangers?

  • I don't get it. Beautiful music played by a beautiful young woman and so many have problems with it instead of enjoying!

  • to all those complaining about her dress...you could just minimize the browser and listen. or turn off your monitor. or look away. I would start with taking your hands out of your pants...

  • it's 2012, you can dress whatever you like and play whatever you like.

Just sit and listen, stop commenting about what dress she should wear on her concerts.

It's not bad being sexy in 2012, even for a professional pianist (and she IS professional).

Why a male pianist can dress in almost ANYTHING if he plays good, but she gets hate for her dress not being long?

  • @eklipsegirl have you seeen a male pianiest wearing a short and clinging purple evening dress?

  • @saintsaens21 what is wrong with a transvestite or just a travesty man wearing a dress and performing some piece of art very professtionally?

  • The females of the Five Browns (the Juilliard pianist family) all wear dresses and look gorgeous, but the dresses are longer. To be honest I only clicked on this because of her dress...it should be longer.

  • -sigh-...thumbs up if you're abit tired reading comments from the no-life critics on youtube who think there opinions are important...if you're gonna leave a comment, leave a good one please?

  • Am I the only one who thinks her dress isn't short enough?

  • there is nothing wrong with us... we are just all very horny....

  • I happen to like her legs, she has nice legs, I'm sure you do too marcphilos, and maybe you're bothered that you're getting turned on by her legs? Jeez, go smoke a joint or get laid, cause you're way too uptight, just because she wears a short dress and it reveals her nice legs makes her less of a talent?

  • @eenabebecho Not uptight at all. Gaudy and vulgar attire has its place. Just not in the concert hall.

  • marcphilos is completely right!

  • the classical music scene is dying and yuja wang is doing a great job of winning the male demographic.

  • @yurikomuro Speak for yourself. I'd rather my concert-going experience not be turned into a walk in the red light district.

  • @marcphilos dont give a shit what you really think.

  • @marcphilos u need to get out more..

  • FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

  • You guys are all right. She does appear to be nothing more than a whore, with average piano skills. LOLz

  • Wonderful talent!

  • slut~

  • Comment removed

  • if it bothers you, close your eyes, jeez!

  • dress perfectly acceptable - what fantasy land are you living in - men's sexual nature is attracted to female bodies; what is she showing to the guys on the side (0:38); completely immodest - she needs a shawl and a long skirt

  • She is an artist and her dress is also inappropriate. So are those heels. She's dressed like a cocktail waitress. You need to get out more if you think that's proper atire for a concert appearnce. It's marketing and distracting.

  • Forgive me, but the very short dress takes me away from the music. She appears to be going more for image than artistry. I have noticed this trend with other young and attractive female pianists. I'd rather stick with listening to the masters of old. The sexual tension generated by her egregious lack of modesty obfuscates whatever musical skill she has.

  • @marcphilos yes i wouldn't particularly go to watch her, i love piano music but forget the performers they are just the vehicle for the piece, what should shine is the piece, if i went just to see a yuja type it would be in a brothel lol

  • @marcphilos What? Then don't watch the video. Just Listen.

  • @italianstllion93 O the listening is great however this item was posted on You Tube so there is video as well, why need to watch the Asian whore?

  • @marcphilos Wang's playing makes it abundantly clear that she's more focused on artistry than anything else. Her dress looks great and is perfectly acceptable, why shouldn't she wear it in a performance? The only sexual tension here is your inability to focus on the music and keep your eyes off her legs - and it's not the woman's responsibility to prevent that. This is the philosophy that leads to mandated burqas and arresting women who wear swimsuits that show too much leg.

  • @astabfosho Well they are right - show open flesh (white woman whore) and the man just takes it, only difference is that she is an Asian from a local brothel...

  • @marcphilos I agree with you there... Her overly sexualized appearance makes it very hard for us men to concentrate on the music (and no this is not misogynistic this is human nature). If she was simply wearing something a bit less revealing she could still look beautiful but without distracting from the music.

  • @TheObsidianDust would you two stop complaining and just enjoy it for what it is. Of all the things to complain about, Jesus! It's insanely fantastic, just go with it, don't swim against the tides, that will interfere with your experience more than anything. She has great legs, and she can expose them whenever she wants to. Use it as a way to train yourselves to focus, you'll get there in the end maybe

  • @TheObsidianDust oh dear. this is 21st first century, what's wrong with you men? if a very talented young male pianist wore a tight sleeveless tank can we women complain? or no we would love that..we would take it as a whole package..and extra spice to the performance.

  • @mediatapwater a very talented young male pianist with six pecs of course ;)

  • @TheObsidianDust spot on.

  • @TheObsidianDust yes, but then how many of us would've clicked this vid in the 1st place without that dress? So the short dress is by default opening me up to music i might have not heard otherwise...

  • @marcphilos Close your eyes and listen if you can't control yourself.

  • @ricardoevelez1 It's not about "controlling" myself wise guy. A wise musician must never let his or her image get in the way of the music. She clearly has a lot of growing up to do.

  • @marcphilos My apologies sir, but your idea of how a musician should or shouldn't dress is outdated and chauvinistic.

  • @marcphilos Yeah ! The sight of those shoulders of appalling ! How dare she wear something other than an ample shirt buttoned all the way up her neck and a dress that covers her ankles ! Not to mention that tacky color ! Earth tones only please !

Your sexism is nothing short of victorian.

  • @reonat Oh get outta here with the sexism card. By your logic I should just waltz into my next piano performance looking like Lil' Wayne and all would be well. If I wanted to see a cheap floozie in high heels and an upper-thigh level skirt I'd head on over to the nearest cabaret on two-dollar whiskey night.

  • @marcphilos Agree fully, perhaps what she lacks in technique and interpretation is made up by listening to the real Master, Michael Ponti (who plays all Scriabin works excellently well) - this Asian needs to show off to get persons to take time to listen to her...perhaps she should have just worn a bikini, it might have showed more!

  • @marcphilos or maybe she just wanted to wear that dress? you could always scroll down or close your eyes and enjoy the sound, im also a guy and i mean yes she's attractive but thats clearly not the only thing that got her this far

  • @marcphilos are you suggesting classical pianists need to wear face veil and cover their body with a blanket because to show their body lines would cause you to be distracted so much that you won't be able to appreciate music? you are full of shit, how do you live with yourself more interestingly, your parents?

  • @yurikomuro This is a disingenuous and moronic comment, and as such does not dignify a serious response.

  • @marcphilos did you think your comment is any different? what makes you think you are so entitled to such grandeur and that you speak for all people who appreciate good classical music? you are so full of shit it's coming out of your ears. please do tell us once again how you think yuja wang is a sucky fucky oriental prostitue you racist piece of shit. you call yourself a music listener? you are obviously more concerned about the visuals so why the fuck would you even bother complaining?

  • @yurikomuro The problem is I want to be taken by the music, but Wang's image gets in the way of that. As I mentioned before, a good musician never allows his or her image to get in the way of the music. Mature listeners understand and appreciate this point. Immature listeners like yourself, on the other hand, would rather defend her raunchy choice of attire with equal measure of raunchiness and profanity, while playing the race card on top of that. Is this what classical music has become?

  • @marcphilos cool story bro, no one cares.

  • @marcphilos How can your ears be irritated by the looks of the interpreter? is that what "mature listeners" have become? If you feel musically distracted than it you who might need to train your ears not being influenced by your vision. That's what usually happens in pop music. It doesnt matter what your music is like, only the look is important because immature listeners spend more time looking than listening.

    Think about it...

  • @marcphilos One additional remark. Do you like Glenn Gould? Well I hate him... simply because I cant concentrate on the actual music with his constant humming. Yet he is a highly regarded artist. Her I would be able to understand why one feels distracted.

  • Comment removed

  • @marcphilos Oh yes how immature of us not to undermine her brilliant performance because of the dress she was wearing. I should really be less tolerable in the future. I wish i was as mature as u.

  • as an"immature listurner" id like to say i dont have a prblem with her dres because im not overwhelmed by it as the "mature listurners" seem to be.Please grow up and apreciate the music

  • @marcphilos

It's a shame too. I agree completely. She is really good, but it doesn't work. She is doing herself a disservice.

  • @marcphilos

"The problem is I want to be taken by the music, but Wang's image gets in the way of that."

And whose fault would that be? ;)

Come on... train your character a bit. You know... like the guy from "Oldboy".

And don't blame your weaknesses on others.

  • @marcphilos @TheObsidianDust You both have simplistic penises.

  • @marcphilos Are you and @TheObsidianDust serious? Scriabin is all about sexual tension, for one thing, but are you serious that you cannot concentrate on the music because of her dress? In our culture today, where to walk down the street would be to see a bounty of short dresses, you can't handle a nice pair of legs? I'm amazed that this ruins the performance for "you men." As a guy I suggest you learn to keep your hormones in check and appreciate the art, or else move to someplace with burqas.

  • @henryr16 Exaggeration is the hallmark of a hollow point.

  • @marcphilos

How's the weather in the 17th century, Cotton Mather?

  • @marcphilos so true

  • @marcphilos Ya... then if she was a fat ass wearing a tiny dress she would look ridiculous and ugly. The fact she's wearing that doesn't take me away from the music. If you're perverted and can't quit looking at her legs then go seek help, chances are you have a problem. If it was a recording you wouldn't know what she was wearing. Quit listening to music with your eyes and start using your ears.

  • @DaGuittarMan Her dress is two inches long. It's distracting. You'd have to be blind not to notice it. If we put eye tracking software on your eyes, you'd be blown away by how times you looked at her legs yourself so stop acting so effing self-righteous.

  • @hrysivjt67 to begin with this video was playing as I was cooking, I wasn't even in front of the computer to look at her legs. You're the one that should quit being a perv.

    Later.

  • @hrysivjt67

"You'd have to be blind not to notice it."

Notice is one thing, getting distracted is another. "If we put eye tracking software on your eyes, you'd be blown away by how times you looked at her legs yourself"

    Sounds like a self-projection.

  • @marcphilos I love it. A pleasure for the eyes and ears.

  • @fredredfredred i don't know have any asians compose any classical? just an honest question

  • @afertyus1000 no idea

  • My comment about her technique was accompanied by remarks about her other attributes, and so was not intended to be a stand-alone assessment of her talent. I mention Sofronitzky only because he was an ideal performer of Scriabin. It seems your argument with me is that I do not prostrate myself before the superhuman technique of Yuja Wang or use superlative enough superlatives to describe it. I am surprised that some one who knows the work of so many great pianists wants to argue about this.

  • LOL! Prostrate! I liked how you used that word...but no! My point was not that at all. But rather disagree with what you wrote: "there are PLENTY of pianists with technique equal to Wang´s". Wrong:There are plenty of great pianists (and not so great ones) with wonderful technique, but one has to think hard to come up with the short list of "equals" (I didn´t even reach 10) And you are right, I didn´t read all the comments, only that one phrase of yours caught my attention.

  • I get the feeling you are judging artistry (since you mention Sofronitzky). That was not my point at all. Rubinstein, Myra Hess, Novaes, Zimmerman, Barenboim, Perhia, Uchida, Gelber, de Larrocha, Lupu, Katsaris...Moravec, Pogorelich, Schiff...etc...even Kissin, all of them are great artists I admire and all have wonderful techniques, but none of them have or had the (out of this world) facility of the pianists on the "other" list.

  • When we talk about technique, I assume we are talking about mechanics (even though a good techinque entitles much more than fast fingers) There ARE plenty of pianists with wonderful, beautiful techniques, but not at this almost superhuman level: Cziffra, Argerich, Horowitz (in his young days), Freire, LangLang (whom I dislike but still has an incredible technical facility), Volodos and Wang! (watch her Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, or the Mozart-Volodos) There´s probably a couple more I forget

  • @martinl19 what about marc andre hamelin surely his technique transcends all

  • wooh she has some sexy dress on man

  • @mikemyers20091

    but she's ugly!!!!!!!!!!

  • If someone doesn't get it, is because is full of ignorance and is not ready to appreciate the greatness of this performance and everything that envolves this wonderful moment, simply is not ready for such a fine Art!

  • The only thing I find here is PURE BEAUTY, Beautiful Music, a Beautiful Piano Performer, an extremely Beautiful Woman, a Beautiful outstanding Performance, a Beautiful Piano, a Beautiful purple Dress, a Beautiful Concert Hall, Beautiful energy, a Beautiful and amazing sound, everything is just perfect,Scriabin would be glad to be the responsable for such a Beauty meeting!Yuja Scriabin would be in love with you!your music, your performance, your person, all you is Beautiful!

  • A ridiculously good pianist is performing and now all of a sudden it's a sin for her to be wearing a slightly revealing (hot) dress? Why not look your best when you are performing anyways? Should she be dressed in jeans? Or a wedding dress? How about a suit? Loosen up fellas.

  • such a dress does not help against ugliness - it makes her more ridiculous.

  • Never thought i would get aroused from Scriabin!

  • precioso todo

  • ferrari born in CHINA

  • if this is the sound of rain on venus, she is a true female divinity.

  • @jose00silva00 I agree

  • See what I mean?

  • Thumbs up if u saw the hot backside of a woman and your penis brought u here

  • @kGmusicpage hell no
