Great social insight by Rodgers and Hammerstein. If everyone could remember back into their early childhood, they'd remember having to be taught hate and prejudice. Then maybe they'd give it up.
What a Message Hidden (not so much) in the Rogers and Hammersteins' Musical for South Pacific, now the real Lesson is if only we could All be not Taught to be like that in our everyday lives, hmm. Peace To All!
The only complaint I have is he moves his hand a bit too much in the same movement. Otherwise it was a fantastic song that I'm sure R&H still smirk in their graves when someone sings it.
It certainly was. But think about it for a moment and about how many of Rogers and Hammerstein's musicals sent out very strong messages dealing with racism, sexism, bigotry...in a way, I believe they pulled the wool over millions of peoples eyes. And R&H are probably still giggling.
@Onegurrrlrev I don't know, really thinking about what generation specifically had a problem with racism? JFK's generation who fought in WW2 was the one who allowed civil rights to occur and yet have been unfairly cast in an oppressive light for 50 years. Eisenhower was from a generation even older than the WW2 generation. So I don't think it was really "ahead of its time" as much as it seems from what culture pre-60s has been portrayed as.
@Onegurrrlrev I've noticed in cinema or tv, you always see the 50s portrayed as either evil and oppressive, or some golden era of America. In reality I think it was ahead of its time to the adults who remembered pre WW2 America and behind the times to those who didn't.
I have a request for all Mandy fans: Several years ago there was a TV tribute to Rogers and Hammerstein... Mandy sang Bali Hai. Does anyone have this recorded?
I was absolutely blessed to grow up close enough to Broadway to see many shows "original cast" as a kid... I love to be moved by the magic of the Theater! But I will say that Mandy singing Bali Hai at that tribute show was just as moving as anything I had ever seen live. I wept like a child, it was so beautiful! Anyone have this?
I do NOT have a copy, but I too wept with Joy not only for Mandy's amazing Bali Hai, but also because he sang this song so wonderfully - It was my introduction to the sensitivity of Hammerstein to racial issues, and how this message so powerfully exposed those who promote hatred as small minds and puny hearts.
I came here to see if I can find Brian Mitchell's "This Nearly Was Mine", which also broke my heart in it's sublime beauty and sadness ...
I...I didn't think I could love him any more. and then THIS!!!!!!

This song always stuns me. It's about 30 seconds long, and sums the whole thing up.
I don't know why people think it's "hidden" though - South Pacific is a very anti-racist play, right from the opening.

Wonderful Mandy. To all that have not, read the book Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener. Wonderful book, it would make a great movie..

This was a very bold song to write during the late 40s, early 50s.

Where is the rest of the song? It was so true then and is just as true now. Hate is easily taught.

Lyrics:
you've got to be taught to hate and fear
you've got to be taught from year to year
it's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
...
you've got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are oddly made and people whose skin is a different shade
...
you've got to be taught before it's too late
before you are 6, or 7, or 8
to hate all the people your relatives hate
