100% a bearing. I would almost bet my bank account on it being no.6 rod bearing. I have had two of these engines and on both the no.6 rod bearing failed. the first time i kept doing what your doing reving it and driving it trying to hear where the ticking sound was coming from and when i finally pulled it apart it had made an awfully mess of the crankshaft and had all little bits of bearing through the whole engine
Dammm, you have problems with timing belt, you need to fix this, my friend had same shit on another engine, he has changet timing belt and then he has same problem, why? because bad and fast work, he has changet timing belt without sync valves with pistons, so what? Same sound like your!!!
you've got a lifter in the head ticking...........pull the valve covers and check the shim clearance from 0-lift.......had it happen to me w/ a 7m......same setup with the 2j, just larger lifters.....give it a shot
