  • Hat.. want..

  • For so many people, music is a competition. "Well Les sucks because so and so can do blah blah blah better than him" It's sad, really. Les is amazing. So is Victor Wooten, all of them. They aren't trying to to anything but to express themselves and play the music they love. In this video, I'm sure that Les could of ripped it, but that's not what he felt would be best. But closed minded people, who are too afraid to venture out of their box, judge to harshly Music is about passion, not competing.

  • just shut up les claypool is the best in bass and hats

  • @MrMcDangervideos I agree. Les is the best dressed, and grooves like a king.

  • @slashsdevil Les sucks because he says so

  • A lot of people told me to look for his bass playing but I'm so hooked on bassists I find better that he feels unoriginal to me :l

  • @Ikarus568 You must have watched a video of John Entwistle before this huh?

  • @clownpipe just cause a 12yr old can slap dont mean its not hard. ur a f'ing clown mate

  • @clownpipe and a 12 year old can talk on youtube as well? Whats your point? A 12 year old can bust out a Peart drum solo, or a jimmy page riff.

Lets lol at everything 12 year olds can do! dumbass

  • @clownpipe

Doesn't mean they'll be good or have any rhythm.

  • how to play like les claypool... you cant!

  • HOLY SMOKES

  • wow... just wow :D

  • wat kind effects does he use???

  • @numetal2011 he's using a phaser, and it sounds like a delay.

but hes got phasers up the asshole so its kinda hard to hear if hes actually using a delay or not

  • Les and all of the band keeping it simple, and opening up.

  • going to see him at cains, and i saw this show at waka too!

  • nice effects.. =)

  • Uhh, what bass does he play ?

  • His signature model bass made by Carl Thompson.

  • i love him and i cant wait till im able to tear shit up on bass like him. someday...

  • none of u should be judging anyone enjoy the music and please just shut up jesus christ thats the beauty of music everyone has different tastes

  • I completely agree

    will everyone please grow up

  • granted... but if a person cant appreciate talent, it either makes them too lazy to learn how to or simply an idiot.

taste can be bad. bad taste is based on incorrect practice.

the only way to have a valid opinion on anything, is to know WHY something is good or bad.

educated, open minded, objective musicians can absolutely judge other musicians skill/sound.

that said, people should not ruin others fun for nothing, unless their fun is damaging to others.

  • @inpsychotive

that pretty much sums up everything I ever wanted to say to all the ignorant people who diss good music at parties and instead put on backstreet boys or something

  • haha backstreet boys, lame

  • @inpsychotive HUH?

  • @inpsychotive Everything you just said is subjective. Its your OPINION, none of it is fact. Yes you can judge others, but that judgement is only "right" to the people who believe it. Music is not 1 + 1 = 2, theres no right answer. How do you judge peoples "valid" opinions? Like i h8 cannibal corpse coz of they're lyrics, but i've never heard they're music. To me thats valid but according to u id have to educate myslef further. I respect that this is your belief, but dont spout it like its gospel

  • @inpsychotive Not! Taste is sequenced on hearing and even non-hearing/vibrations.

  • @inpsychotive

so true, (i may not be very good, but i can still say i dont like cliff burton much because i dont like his tone really, however i do admire him as a composer....) but i can back up what i say (minus the tone thing, cause thats really just personal preference, but you have a really good point :D

  • Just discovered this guy, and it is so different and perfect!

  • lol u guys r hilarious!

  • i saw this at bonaroo, and this song especially was awesome.

  • Love yer Claypool, every day.

  • les is not a technician or an innovator of any kind- he is a middle of the road - attitude bass player

  • nothing more and nothing less.

  • His work with the whamola and bassjo are definatly innovative dont you agree?

  • i firmly disagree

  • They say that there is a fine line between genius and insanity. Les Claypool jumps back and forth over it. That is what makes him such a great musician. Honestly I could care less about any jazz bass stuff from him. Love his music

  • les is the kind of bassist that would play things really out there and try new stuff, im sure he's had his share of jazz years, just playing wat he plays is so much more fun

  • I agree with you.he is awesome and he was inoovative. My appologyze!

  • Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Millar. That are the names which are always be mentioned as we talk about bassplayers who were innovative in musicstyles like funk, soul jazzrock etc.. Noone talks about Les claypool as a innovator in basslines. He is just a follower. Nothing special.

  • And offcourse Victor Wooten!

  • nothing special and I bet you couldn't play half the stuff he does.. he has his own sound and style after studying others, and I think he's doing good for where he wants to be.

  • No I don't play hiss stuff because it's not funky enough!

  • after 5 minutes listening its beginning boring.. always the same sound. If you listening to the bassplayers i mentioned then you hear that they let the bass singing but wat he is doing is just playing in one way.Boring!

  • I listen to those bass players you name dropped, and you're wrong. Larry Graham has always had that one thunky slap tone. Marcus Miller has a nice crisp trebly jazz slap tone and he's stuck with it.

Les plays on various basses, which changes his sound, who else slaps on a 6 string fretless. I rest my case.

  • Larry Graham was the founder of that tune you know 30 years ago! while he was playing with Sly. The drummer did not show up hat replaces the beat with his bass... I know my classics. You do? And wat mr. claypool does is just a copy. This man with all respect n isever mentioned when people talk about great bassplayers. You have to admit that. And know i know why after listening to him. I repeat not bad but not the bomb.

  • anybody with any decent slap skills knows how larry came through with it.

  • @rumahtiga you dont even know the history of larry grahams innovation.

I wish i could slap you through the computer.

  • I dont'know anything about the history of larry gahams history innovation??? mr.socio....open your eyes and read my former comment about this middle of the road bassplayer related to Larry Graham.

  • Read this mr.socio! Don't give your comment if you dont even know were you are talking about! This proves that you are a nitwit!

  • look at my comment one month ago mr.socio nitwit

  • i mean 40 years ago! And Larry has much more funk in his bass but thats normal because (i dont want to be racial) he is a brotha. Sorry

  • That's bullshit, Jaco Pastorius was known as a great bassist, one of the best.. with one of the funkiest basses ever, and the soul to match it, and he's WHITE.

  • and claypool may not be mentioned as "one of the greats" or as something innovative in playing style... but he's one hell of a fun bassist, and as much as I love Miller and Wooten, I'd pay more to see Les.

  • Just have fun brother listening to him if you are satisfied in such a level..Who am i to judge you?

  • You are a nobody to judge me, as I also like "the greats" that you're comparing him to

  • Its nice to hear that you agree with me if talk about the greatest bassplayers...

  • I've already said that comments back, you weren't listening... He's a performer, not an innovater, and he's happy with what he has.. and so am I, as I'm a fan of his

  • was I asking if you would pay to see him? no,

and the funny thing about that festival is, I don't think he really cares. Some standard you got there. :)

  • You even don't know about the NSJF. .......look at the internet bro!

  • I'd rather not.

  • @rumahtiga Who gives a shit about a jazz festival. Music is about art not who gets invited to a freakin festival. Thats like saying no tv show is good unless it gets an emmy.

  • Maybe you don't give a shit. But who is interested in your opinion.. By the way 13 april in my home town. Graham central Station. I willl be there. I wonder if you ever did go to a live Gig of any bassplayer except this middleof the road bassplayer Les Who?

    Get down Bootsy!

  • A little angry? Mark king is amazing, les claypool is amazing, larry graham is amazing and bootsy is amazing.

Les claypool isnt the best in the world, i never said he was nor did i say i only listen to him. Go back to your bridge troll.

The fact of the matter is, this 'middle of the road bass player' as you say, is a better bassist then you, makes more money then you and has more fans then you. So to say Les who? is kinda funny considering it comes from a nobody.

  • I am a lttle angry?Your interpretation brotha! Iam not a bassplayer. So you cannot compare Les with me. A little angry brotha?I am just a bass fan so i listen to bassplayers. There are middle of the road bassplayers like les claypool and you have middle of the road bass fans like you.... try to impress with facts which everybody already knows.... Les Who and Socio Who??? That fits.... By the way. What's money has to do with it? you are a middle off the road listener. Who says he is a nobody.

  • I didnt claim to be somebody nor am i the one calling great musicians Who.

I listen to many great bassists. I enjoy les claypools creative songs, as do others. Some people might not think les is a great bassist, but I do so deal with it.

  • I saw your profile. I read your list with favorite bands/muscions. I don't wanna discuss with you anymore about bassplayers...I cannot take you for serious man if we talk about bassplayers...

  • Those are bands. I didnt say who my favorite musicians by themselves are. Les Claypool was refering to his band Les Claypool.

    your pretty stuck up eh?

  • if you like the bass it's impossible to choose thats bands as your favorite...

    You are a funky freak....lolz...

no iam not stuck up. You are a shame for all bass fans all over the world man. that is my last remark to you.

  • les claypool and geddy lee are great bass players if you dont think so your an idiot.

Go back under your bridge troll

  • @rumahtiga he listens to tool rage against the machine and primus which all have amazing bass lines so I dont what kinda crack your smokin in finland

  • Oh really??? I didnt know that......

  • @m1ndNOVA mark king too.

  • his ability and skill is blingingly amazing, but his tone is what kills me. When it comes to slap, I lean heavily towards Larry Graham, but with Marcus Miller's tone.

  • @m1ndNOVA

sorry i didnt say which comment i was directing that at. I was adding to your comment about jaco and white people with soul and funk which is why I said mark king.

Yeah larry graham is the man I love his tunes, sly and the family stones are one of my most frequently listened bands on my ipod, and gct.

Such a creative, funky man that larry.

  • Mark King, Level42? White Funk?. Nice try socio! He and your les are the same and have something incommen. Both are bassplayers....

  • I can't tell whether your lack of an open mind or your limited sentence structure is more annoying.

  • lol retard

  • @m1ndNOVA yeah thats a brain bender right there, im gonna go with choosing to write that in the first place as whats most annoying

  • @m1ndNOVA Never use language for music.

  • @m1ndNOVA HEIL GRAMMA NAZI

  • Comment removed

  • And it's Marcus Miller, not Millar.

  • I know i was checking if you your classics...

  • Actually, it's called a typo.

  • tomato tommaatooo

  • pardon?

  • that's absolutely retarded, you're a fucking moron

  • I don't give a shit for your opinion.

  • Nothing is gayer than listening to all you 12 year old boys argue over "who is the best bassist". Shut the fuck up, and turn on your amps and play.

  • @lowfiwhiteguy i totally agree with you. Who cares who the best is ? clay is amazing an thats all that matters.

  • Comment removed

  • you with some dude tounge in your asshole would be pretty homo erotic i think. delicious

  • @lowfiwhiteguy THANK you lowfiwhiteguy!!! to compare bassists (or musicians) of a different style is like saying apples are better than oranges, it is what and how one interprets music.

  • They are all showoffs, essentially, but so are most

    musicians. Just an observer.

  • id show off too if i had that erotic ass skill

  • well you all can argue whether wooten, flea or claypool is the best basist but i personally think Louis Johnston is... so stick that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it!

  • Thank you, Sir, for your objective and mature argument. I'm sure looking forward to any other insightful pieces of information you might spew out...

Bottom-line: Not every style is compatible with everyone's tastes. That's the charm of listening to music, remember? Don't like Claypool, that's fine, but preaching to his fans about "what a real bassplayer is", that's just moronic...

  • oke, tell me whats his contribution in relation to bassplayers to music. Is his way in playing the bass innovative?????

  • That's not the point. You can't say you respect a musician simply because he or she brought something new to a certain genre of music.

Claypool is just wacky and fun. That's why we like listening to him. So how about we stop with the pseudo-intellectualism and enjoy things for what they are?

  • Sorry, if you like bassplayers(I do!) you cannot be satisfied with les claypool. I wonder if you ever listened to other bassplayers for exemple the bassplayer i mentioned. Les claypool is not bad. but surely not the Bomb!

  • Of course, man, the bassplayers you mentioned are all amazing, but it all boils down to taste in music in the end

  • @rumahtiga You should really watch some of Claypool's real slapping videos. He's awesome, really. I would say that Victor Wooten is better, but you can't say that Claypool is an average player.

  • watch Les Claypool-Bass Solo

  • Comment removed

  • @EspenBass victor freakin wooten

  • there are too many great bassists out there to pick a fav but claypools carl thompson is the best bass.

  • Im not really sure whether or not "The Best Bassist" could be just anyone. Afterall, that is what an opinion is, what YOU think. Talent is real, and should be taken in as fact. Flea is a very talented bassist (FACT). I think Geddy Lee is better aswell as Les Claypool. The only problem with that statement is nobody will ever know for sure whos the best. So it is a waste of time saying wether or not someone is better because in the end someone will disagree. So its best to just listen to the music

  • Sarcastically speaking, everyone knows your opinion is clearly incorrect and how dare you have it. You must conform to those who down thumb you so they can feel good about themselves and the fact that they think everything is working out to improve their image of reality. I spit on you for liking something else that doesn't concur with the opinions of the correct people.

Sorry for wasting your time bud. I had to do that. =P I hate when people do that as well. I think they both kick ass equally.

  • i couldn't tell you if claypool is the most skilled bassist. there are too many good musicians out there to decide that. claypool is my favorite because he defines what a badass bass player is.

  • wow you are nuts kid. primus is phenomenal

  • \youre an idiot, primus sucks is primus's own words... dumbass

  • you're an idiot, back off. the person digs primus, who cares if he/she doesnt know all the bs lines, and history and shit.

  • Primus Sucks!

  • i agree with you

  • Guy is the super funk master. Not a black bass player on the planet with more fuck.

  • les and flea are the top dawgs overall.

thats including guitar drums and everything.

  • I really like Flea's fingering style, not his slapping, though.

  • hes slapping is what made him unique, his aggressive style that comes from a mixture of funk and punk, i love it

  • wooten!!!

  • i think at 4th should be jack casady

  • why does it have to be a competition of race? go fuck yourself.

  • too much time on your hands?

  • Les Claypool can play damn good on the fretless bass, but don't forget a man that they call Bootsy, that is Bootsy Collins, one of the Masters of Funk.

  • You know what it comes down too.... I tell u what, Claypool is hands down the most creative figure I have seen play music. Period!! Anyone named here is a master at playing, yes, but I don't think you can argue against this element. LC dables all over the board, def pulls all the stops in my opinion. No one impresses me more than anything he has done. I don't care if you can play bach 100mph, cuz all I gotta do is spin the record really quick to get the same effect.

  • right on, i couldn't say it better, so i'll just add that Les is a creator, anyone can 'cover', imitate', 'copy', etc., but to create your own sound, well, that's a master. There it is, les is a master, like friggin yoda.

  • i'll agree with both of you. if it wasn't for self-taught innovators like Claypool, music would be overrun with uncreative nit-wits who think that the "secret" of music is found through the memorization and regurgitation of terminology.
