I'm really happy to see this video! My Bunny has a head tilt since 3 days. I went to the vet and he said to euthanize him when he doesn't walk normally after 5 days. He still falls down often and rolls over constantly, but he's still eating and drinkin... Thanks for posting this video, it gave me a bit more hope again :))
@Inyesta1000 Yes, if your bun is eating and drinking- even with help, then give him a chance and have them put him on medications! My bunny is still alive and doing very well. This video was taken 3 years ago! :) I'm happy to report he will be having yet another birthday March 1st. He will be 10 years old! Make sure to give your bun plenty of hay. A little minced garlic on some leaf lettuce is good for them too.
Our bunny was just diagnosed with head tilt and is responding very well to antiparasitic meds. Happy that people are creating awareness...best of luck!
@masterchief3k It messed up the vestibular nerve that has to do with equilibrium and balance. He "thinks" he's right side up, I guess. He can straighten his head out and does when he eats, it just doesn't stay that way.
our bunny sadly dies in 2008 miss him everyday, he had head tilt and couldn't even feed himself. not many people know about head tilt and what can cause it, pet shops don't advise you about it either, we opened a page on facebook to make awareness of head tilt and E.C.
vets and some people think its better for the rabbit to be put to sleep if it has head tilt, that's not the case at all why if they're eating and they're happy
My 7 year old lop rabbit just developed severe health tilt after being treated for bowel problems and an ear infection. The health tilt is so severe she barely can lift her head at all and has to be fed with a syringe now so she's going to the vet in the morning. Most likely she will be put down because there won't be any quality of life fore her considering she can only rest on her side or roll around when she tries to get up. It's a sad situation.
@belladonna1999 I just now seen this. I am so sorry to hear about your bunny's head tilt. Sometimes they can be saved- like my Thunder, and sometimes it is the right thing to do to let them go. Thunder still is tilted but gets around fine and loves to be a little pest. lol It was 3 years ago he developed tilt and he is still going strong. He will be 10 in March! He is a very old man rabbit. Sounds like your bun lead a long happy life.
awh no poor baby :( my bunny had this, turned out it was 'econniculi' or something, look it up. he was put on worming stuff, and given antibiotics incase it was an ear infection, and he 100 percent recovered. they just need the correct medication, lots of food and drink, and LOTS of TLC!
he died though of something else a few weeks ago :(
enjoy your bunny while he's there. miss them so much when they are gone.
@Emiillyyx Thank you. E. Cuniculi is another thing that can cause head tilt. My rabbit was checked and treated for that at first, then it was discovered it was an inner ear infection and not E. Cuniculi. It's been 3 years now since he got sick. He's still going strong. He's a very awesome bun! :)
My bun got head tilt this past June, after a month of treatment he's almost 100% again. Actually more energetic then before, with only a slight tilt. In the beginning he wouldn't eat on his own, and it was stressful to always been feeding him and giving medication. He started eatting again when I started buying him fresh parsley. He's getting better and better every day. Not all cases are terminal. It just takes a lot of patience and some research.
my 7 year old dwarf just got head tilt. i took her to the vet and they gave me medication and everything. i feed her through a syringe, but should she still be eating whole foods like lettuce and pellets?
Is there a chance of head tilt not being treated? i heard its more fatal in smaller bunnies.
I'm awfully worried about her, i love her so much!
@tacotunnel mine just got I think the same day I read online they don't feel any pain mines on meds to keep feeding her pellets! mines only 12 weeks I love hime so much he always licks me
poor baby mine just developed head tilt on saturday hes on medication and starting to look better he has a parasite he was born with. I am so glad I got him we got hime from a pet farm and im sure they would have killed him if he develooped it when they had hhim! hes only 12 weeks
@sprigglebot Most people kill (cull) the rabbits off when they develop tilt. :( It takes more time (and money) to save a bun with head tilt. Some forms are contagious to other rabbits in the herd depending on the cause. It can also be called wry neck.
Hey, I'd gladly twist your head 90 degrees and see how long you think that is a "life worth living".
I love you weirdos. You preach about morals and the rights of primitive animals as if they were human, and at the same time you keep them alive and suffering. Oh, and maybe you should take a look at what happens inside a slaughterhouse for the pigs, cows and chicken that end up on your plate.
Knew you are wacko. I know your kind. The humane thing to do is to end this animal's suffering but that would mean a pettyminded loon like yourself would part with it. Don't you have like dozens of rabbits? Focus on the healthy ones.
And if you can't afford treatment then have it euthanized. That rabbit will never be healthy again, hey maybe you can pray to your God to cure it by some miracle.
And who the hell needs 10 minutes to make a point?? Don't you have more vital tasks in life?
@hamidanas Take you bunny immediately to the vet if you haven't already. You will need antibiotics and probably pain medicine called Metacam. Make sure the bunny has lots of clean water to drink and lots of timothy hay to eat as well as things like carrots (but not a whole lot- 1 to 2 baby carrots a day), dandelion flowers and leaves rinsed off, dark green lettuce like romaine (NOT iceburg lettuce), cilantro and parsley are very good. Make sure you offer rabbit pellets as well.
please help me my bunny has the same thing its as bad. He's been on antibiotics since sunday and they havnt helped at all in fact he has gotton worse. the vet checked his ears and said they looked fine. I don't know what to do the vets where i live aren't very knowledgeable about rabbits. She thought my rabbit had something similar to cerbal paulbsly only in rabbit forrm.
Thank you 'shaneyra'. I hope your rabbit never gets it either. It is a sad thing. Thunder is doing very well and doesn't pay much attention to his condition. Still, I would much rather his head not be tilted.
Awuh, I find this adorable. My rabbit whom I love very much has gotten the same thing. We are taking her to the vet to stop the dizziness so that will make her be able to stand instead of rolling around. This video makes me have hope I can still have my little bunny.
awww I love this. I have a bunny Cocoa with the same thing. I used to have 3 bunnies but one past away last summer...rest in peace Thumper... the two I have now.. one has developed head tilt as well; named Cocoa & the other one is bunny Fufu but she is still healthy and did not develope anything & I hope she doesn't either :( It's a very sad thing to watch isn't it? It took me a long time not to cry everytime since she was so playful before she still is but not as much. ~Suzzie Marie Rose<3
@SuzzieMarieRose It's nice though that Cocoa has a rabbit companion to help groom her. My Thunder is without a mate. He is a bachelor bunny. That's ok though because he spends most of his time 'torturing' me! :)
Sorry I didn't respond sooner nprozy. I'm not on here much. Onset of head tilt can be gradual or you just wake up one morning and your rabbit's head is tilted. It depends on the reason. I hope you vet put your rabbit on antibiotics or did a test for possible inner ear infection. That and ecunniculi (sp) are the most common things. I hope your bunny is doing ok. Thank you for the compliment- my bunny thanks you. :)
I was wondering if you could tell me what the original onset of head tilt looks like. I think that my rabbit may be developing this. He has been to the vet recently for other issues but now turns his head to one side when he is not active or eating. All of the videos I have seen show rabbits with their heads always tilted but I thought maybe that is a later progression. I'm calling my vet tomorrow for a talk . :) Your bunny is very cute!
@tamtom316 yeah, he made it! his head will stay tilted but he seems happy and he's getting used to his new view of the world.
i'm having a slightly harder time getting used to seeing him like that. xD
do you have any tips on what i can give him to play with or something like that? i don't want him to be bored now that he can't run around wreaking havoc anymore. ;)
I am so glad you take so good care of your bun. Just because a bun has head tilt, does not mean they need to be euthanized. Lots of love and healing vibes to you guys.
My sons 10 1/2 week old holland lop developed this last week. I am new to rabbits and was really scared for Chunk. We had only had him 8 days. I took him to the vet and got Ivomectin (spelling?). According to research I did this is a treatment to use, some also use piperazine followed a week later with more Ivomectin. He started with head shaking and eye darting but by later that evening it had stopped. Head still tilted but not too bad. I also massage his neck carefully. He enjoys it!
@TamJ320 you can treat it. my bunny that passed away had it. it was so sad but after a treatment from the vet. the head was the same like before. he passed away a year later because he was 9 ( sorry for the bad english :) )
My bunny developed a head tilt a few days ago but somehow she doesnt seem to mind, shes going to the vet later, i wanna be a bunny becuase their really strong and happy :3
HUGS and KISSES from me and my bunny Roger!!! i dont understand how people just simply say euthanize them if the animal is completely innocent... i got that a lot too but i like to judge on the quality and the happiness they are experiencing rather than quantity of life! :)
Exactly! Wonderful wording! Quality and happiness they are experiencing- that's what I think too! :) My bunny is old but healthy (other than the tilt), happy and well loved.
He is doing wonderful. The tilt is permanent but he is doing great. Happy little bun. Gives bunny kisses, nudges, and chatters up a storm with happy bunny vibes.
He will always be tilted but he is happy and healthy otherwise. He purrs, chatters, begs for treats, plays ball, grunts at me (lol) and gives lots of bunny love.
I agree. I would never put my buns to sleep just because they're a little sideways! When my dwarf bun suddenly got sick, her eyes were rolling and she kept leaning to one side. I just wanted her to get better, not put her to sleep! I'm so glad to see that your bun is so playful!
nayumi303 Thank you. It's always nice to have people who understand. Thunder has been tilted for over a yr now and is a very healthy active bunny with a mischevious side as well- he just looks at the world with a different angle!
brodey- he is off all meds now. No more infection but still tilted. :( Still, he can flip his head up, hop around, and do anything he could before- just a little upside down looking. I will have to take some new videos and post them. He loves messages!
bfsan- no he isn't in pain. He was at first. Ear infections and such are painful just as they are in humans. He was on pain meds that really helped. Now he is just a mischevious bunny with lots of tricks to make sure he gets as much attention and affection as he wants. He rules us! LOL He is a very old bunny but very much active and lovable. Thanks for asking.
My bunny is only 3.5 y.o. and he's been blind for over 1.5 now and recently developed a head tilt as well (not as bad though). Vets are not sure whats causing it and its pretty sad. I would never put my cookums to sleep either.
Have they given your bunny any medications or done any tests? Baytril, Panacur and Azithromycin are the most popular. Metacam is wonderful if their is any pain. Ear cultures are great for checking for different things.
Surprisingly the head tilt went away on its own just a week after i posted that comment. I have no idea what t was I'm just glad its gone and he's back to normal. Hope your baby improved since you last updated as well!
And you are so sweet! Thank you for the encouraging comment. I wish he could be cured too. The infection is gone but it seems the tilt is lasting. He can raise and turn his head, just he ends up doing more things and laying with his head to the side. He is playful, loving and happy. That counts for something I guess.
Your are awesome for your uplifting comments. Thank you so much! He rules me though. I am nothing more than a bunny slave. LOL His infection is gone but he is still tilted (1 yr later). He doesn't seem to care as long as he gets what he wants- which of course he does.
Thank you so much hunnygirl31, for the encouraging message! After 10+ vet visits, he is still severely "upside down" but the rolling isn't as bad. He eats/drinks on his own and has an excellent appetite. I'm hopeful!
Hey. Your rabbit is beautiful. My rabbit developed a severe head tilt on November 2007. And he still has his head tilted. It was totally almost upside down in the beginning but through time he learned how to walk without spinning, and eat on his own etc. Now he lifts his head up, it no longer on the floor and his head got a little straighter but it's still tilted. But he's healthy!!
He also stands on his hind legs and runs and jumps a little here and there. It was so bad in the beginning but he got soo much better. you're doing the right thing. Has his head gotten a little better since then?
oh poor baby. my bunny Ryo had this before. I took him to the vet immediately and he got a shot and prescribed Baytril syrup to be given 10ml twice/day. it worked like magic and hea doesn't have that anymore. hope this help
Thank you 9gemini. Unfortunately Thunder has been on Baytril (and lots other medications & injections), still tilted. :( Glad Ryo is cured. :) Thanks for caring.
This is a great video. It shows really well that rabbits are able to cope with tilt symptoms - probably better than we are able to bear thinking of our pets thus afflicted.
I know how hard you're working to get him over this illness and it's clear how dearly he and you love each other.
Thank's Ros. You, Katy and all the rest of the On the Wonk crew, have been wonderful supporters to see us through this. :) We couldn't do it without you! (Tammy and Thunder)
Do your vets know that head tilt in rabbits is often due to a parasite, e. cunniculi? It is treated with fenbendazole or albendazole, if that's the cause.
I'm really happy to see this video! My Bunny has a head tilt since 3 days. I went to the vet and he said to euthanize him when he doesn't walk normally after 5 days. He is playful in spite of his condition. :) He is a wonderful bun. He rules my life. ahahaha. He is getting up there in yrs.

brodey- he is off all meds now. No more infection but still tilted. :( Still, he can flip his head up, hop around, and do anything he could before- just a little upside down looking. I will have to take some new videos and post them. He loves messages!

poor bunny :( is he in pain?
bfsan 2 years ago
bfsan- no he isn't in pain.

Hope your baby improved since you last updated as well!

you are so awesome! i'm glad you give a lot of time and love to give to the bunny! i hope he will get cured! :)

He's beautiful and full of life!!! Thanks for sharing him!

Do your vets know that head tilt in rabbits is often due to a parasite, e. cunniculi? It is treated with fenbendazole or albendazole, if that's the cause.

Thunder took fenbendazole (which is Panacur) for 28 days as a precaution. :)
