@pergogedon Nope. If you follow the timeline Green/Blue/Red > Gold/Silver Red started with Bulbasaur, he caught Pikachu later. His rival was Blue (In Japan, Red was actually Green and Blue was Red, he had charmender and not Squirtle or Eevee). The playable girl Green (Blue in Japan) in Fire Red/Leaf was actually a rival in the Manga and she had Squirtle (the manga existed before the anime).

@TheProtoBuster actually i was thinking of the game itself not the manga. in the anga he has a poliwhirl before he gets bulbasaur. I don't know the actual story behind red as far as th game because you play as him in red/blue version. actually i really liked the manga but it was made based off of the game so who's to say for certain what pokemon he had to start.

I got beaten so hard he kicked me off Mt. Silver which I named Mt. Red
