  • @24sniperkitty24 i am nineteen now so teen years ago

  • I remember this race... I don't know if anyone else actually thought this (I hope not), but when the wreck intially happend, I thought Johnny Benson was killed instantly. I was relieved to see he was ok.

  • SuperSpeedways and Short Tracks provide the best finishes. Cookie cutter 1.5 tracks suck big!

  • allen bestwick and benny parsons...what could be better?

  • picture sucks

  • This was the race that I started hating Matt Kenseth. He hit Gordon in the trioval of the last lap and sent him back to seventh.

  • @MidniteHaze1 Im a huge Gordon fan but Jeff Gordon said if Matt wasn't there he would have crashed. Also he blew a tire coming into turn 3 AND he won the Chaimpionship so it wasn't that bad

  • does watching the end of this race give you chills sure as hell does me

NBC owned back in the day

  • Priceless commentary. Although, the network has gone downhill since BP died. RIP

  • This is what happens when a race is called "EA Sports".

  • I remember watching this race when I was 11. I was a huge Bobby Labonte fan and when Tony Stewart ducked down and started helping Junior, I got in trouble for yelling, "Stewart, you BASTARD!!!" lol

  • @pirate772009 i was also a huge labonte fan and get soap in my mouth for dropping the f bomb when i was 9

  • Now I noticed these cars seem bigger then the c.o.t cars is that true? And there made out of the same thing right? This was my very first race I saw on TV just flipping through channels and been a Nascar fan since hehe.

  • @lakelandchief The COT is a few inches wider on either side and I think 4 inches taller.

  • Great coverage, I miss these days. Too bad Dale Jr. had to ruin it by winning.

  • @metalligimp how did jr ruin it jrs a beast

  • @kaio808skate96 cause Junior sucks and is over-rated :-)

  • Best nascar race ever

  • 9 years ago today....wow, seems like just yesterday! By far one of my all-time favorite Talladega finishes.

  • With the exception of the last lap of the Daytona 500, 2001 was the last great year for NASCAR. I sure do miss those days with good announcers, onboard cameras that show more than just the driver sitting there turning the wheel (and were used to show wrecks, I love Johnny Bensons onboard), and overall better racing.

  • 1:01 What a noise that is!

  • allen bestwick, benny parsons, wally dallenbach = best commentators in NASCAR

  • Racing back to the line. They say it could save somebodies life because the safty crews could get there quicker. If somebody is seriously hurt, do you think that 20 more seconds is gonna kill him.

  • @LVI56 - I can't believe I'm just coming across all of these. And I don't care what anybody says... 1:38 - 2:04 is an awesome ride. Thanks for the upload!

  • Holy Donut!

  • ok im gonna straighten things out...stewart left labonte dry because it was the final lap and the final lap at RP tracks are always free-for-alls and stewart was trying to do what was best to win the race...so dont blame stewart for labontes crash because labonte was a little at fault because he went to block hamilton and drove the car up the race track where there was no grip and let labonte get p and under him and turned him and the result was what you see here

  • And not only that, Dale Jr. had the momentum. If Tony went with Bobby, it would've been like driving into a brick wall, they would've got nowhere. Personally, if I was Jeff Burton, I think he should've went with Tony, but what happened happened, and the #8 won.

  • yea thats true and labonte shouldnta thought that he wouldnt hit hamilton and hamilton shouldnt shouldnta thought bobby labonte wouldnt come down on him and shoulda said screw it and left him halfway up the track

  • @Hendrick588 'Course, it's the last lap, so what are you gonna do, I mean really? I guess Bobby thought that if he got himself infront of Hamilton, the one Bobby would've hooked up with the other and then haul ass back, but they wouldn't have won anyway. I mean Dale and Tony were hauling ass, and Jeff Burton was right with them.

  • Jeff Gordon last car threw that in the front of the field the guy has a hell of alot of talent thats not the first time ive seen him do that and it wont be the last.

  • @nascarfan4lyf That's why Jeff's my hero.

  • I miss Buckshot Jones lol

  • did i win? lol

  • i was in florida im a gordon fan not knowing where he finished i think he was 7th

  • i was 5 when I saw this and being a bobby fan i was really pissed at Tony for not going with Bobby

  • I felt bad for bobby labonte because tony left him on the top with about 7 laps to go and then he flips.

  • jr was the man at talladega back then wtf happened I guess that move to hendrick wasn't the best choice he hasn't been spectacular since joining the NY yankees of Nascar

  • It's not that, it's just he just isn't that good with the COT. He can drive it but something always happens to the car.

  • Talladega's my favorite track.

  • ME TO

  • I have a diecast of that 20 car.

  • 1:64 or 1:24 cuz im gettin tony stewart and bobby labonte 1:64

  • That is a huge wreck, when i go to talladega i really want to see a big wreck. Because it is the best time to go there.

  • that was the first time i've ever seen "The Big Wreck" at Talledega

I was six years old back in '01

  • this was the first race I ever saw

  • I saw this on another video and it had the TNT logo on top.

  • @einsteinpup ...while this one's the NBC original live broadcast of the race as far as i remember

HELL, HOW I MIISS NASCAR ON NBC!!!!!!!!!!

  • Only reason jr always won the plate races was bcuz he was popular and every1 wanted to work with him his dad had the real talent not him

  • lolwut? Please. Jr has more talent than you'll ever have. And Jr won the plate races because between 2001 and 2005, DEI had the best engines and cars at the RP races. Sr was "Mr. Restrictor Plate" and Jr is the same way. But Jr isn't just an RP racer, he has won at other tracks too. Richmond, Texas, Bristol, Atlanta, etc. Yeah, that's a "talentless" driver alright...

  • was jeff involed

  • no he just got threw

  • 7th place

  • LOL i hope so

  • @lee5866 no, he cut down his tire though he finished seventh

  • @lee5866 He drove thru, but was NOT hit

  • man, first labonte got hung out to dry by stewart...has to fend of hamilton, then gets wrecked and flipped for his troubles...that sucks

  • I love nascar for the racing, but the suspense of the Big One happening is what makes Talladega and Daytona suspenseful. imo

  • I was at that race.

  • Comment removed

  • no he finished seventh and I'm happy he got passed it

  • whos car hit the wall head next to bobby

  • Johnny Benson.

  • yea i miss parsins too

  • I wish they still used those cockpit cameras when they crash now and days that gives you a great feel of the crash

  • Me too.

  • good thing they didnt show the one in dale srs car at the 500=[

    rip dale

  • nbc's coverage was always the best

  • Yes it was.

  • Ah, the good ol' days when they didn't do that freeze the field cockshit.

  • i miss BP

  • unreal those were the good days when dei didnt make crap engines

  • Actually, DEI ran Childress engines.

  • great finish

  • I was there, but I was about 8 years old, so I dont remember it that well.

Ive been to 7 races there though!

  • Agreed...back when NASCAR let the drivers be themselves for a change and not a corprate puppy like nowdays. I think that the reason Junior hasn't won in a while was cause NASCAR dont like him or Tony because they actually have a REAL personality and dont spit out their sponsors and don't always say "yes" to whatever NASCAR wants to do. I hate it, Junior is awesome...I just wish NASCAR would let him do his damn job, because he would be doing it as well as if that car was black and had a "3" on it

  • what you just said makes no sense at all.

  • My last comment paraphrased...NASCAR likes drivers and favors drivers that always take their side and never turn on them ie Johnson. Junior, Stewart, sometimes Jeff Gordon they dont agree with NASCAR's decisions sometimes. Who has won the last 2 championships and is getting NASAR

s support to destroy Gordon's records that nobody ever thought could be repeated? Johnson.

  • With ya there. NASCAR is trying to destory Jeffs records. Jeff was dominanting and then NASCAR says "WHOA, hold up a minute. Lets create the Chase and fuck Jeff Gordon over." And has let Chad Knaus cheat regularly and only give him a slap on the wrist. Chad shouldn't even be in NASCAR. His ass should be on the couch 'banned for life'.

  • Here here!

  • fucking idiots

  • every1 picks jr. at the end

  • I think everyone except the front 3 was in that wreck!

  • ahhh racing back too the flag.........way it should be.

  • amen...so long as everyone is safe and well after the flag!

  • o yea def. it makes it more interesting an fun!

  • hell yeah! i mean...maye at like intermediate tracks where they get spread out they shouldnt race to the flag. but at superspeedways the need to! its so fun!

  • Hell yeah man. Back when the drivers had BALLS and NASCAR wasn't so damn corprate and worried that a driver might offend one of the higher-ups.I look at NASCAR almost like the WWE...it has changed and nobody except new fans like it.

  • a fucking men dude =]

  • @rig48 damn right

  • If you missed this race, you missed the season. And the "Big One" can be very scary and hard to get out of wreck.

  • man, Bobby could've won that

  • allen bestwick is a great announcer. weber just doesnt seem enthusiastic enough.

  • IN my opinion, nascar should just have the truck series commentators (from the SPEED channel) do every race. I really like those guys!

  • i think the speed commentators are dull xcept mikey.

  • @montyth HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!

  • Lol Stewart can never win at Talladega.

  • hell yeah

  • I just wish Stewart could win

  • In your face he won last fall during the chase.

  • this was a great race at talladega. nbc/tnt had the best commentary. stewart left labonte hanging by himself on final lap before the big one started.

  • allen bestwick is the best

  • do you have the full post race

  • this race was fucken crazy, how did jeff gordon get through it though?

  • by playing bump tag with Matt Kenseth

  • that was his only escape

  • what a race

  • this is a great vid!! i remember this race i was freaking out when i saw labonte go over and every one spinning cuz i thought gordon was in it. I wonder wat would have happened if they didnt wrek or at leats at tht spot and if Jr stil would of held off for the win?

  • it's a toss up which finish was better, this one or the one the year before that dale sr won

  • Holy Cow! When Labonte Fliped Over The Roof

    Flaps Did Their Job

  • Well when he got hit the roof flaps had no time to actually work

  • One word. WOW!

  • Was It More Amazing When Bobby Labonte Blocked

    Bobby Hamilton?

  • I was there to see that, too bad I wasn't on the back stretch to view it clearly. And that's the same race they inspected Earnhardt's car and found his car was adjusted 1/8 of an inch lower than it was suppose to be. Good times.

  • Jeff Gordon go through the wreck by locking wheels with Kenseth. Unfortunetly, this cut down one of his tires, and fell to 7th (from 5th in turn 4).

  • one of my favorite races i ever watched from start to finish

    thnx for posting

  • Hey, Dale Jr. and Stewart are good buddies. They are way better friends than stewart and labonte. Plus, Labonte came down on Hamiliton when he tried to block him. If Bobby L. hadn't tried to block Bobby H., Bobby Hamiliton would be left out to dry and labonte could've had a run on earnhardt. jr.

  • Can't believe you people rip on Stewart for doing what he thought he had to do to win the race. What about Labonte's blocking. That was probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen Labonte do, and he hasn't done many dumb things.

  • Alan Bestwick needs to come back as head commentator for NBC and TNT. Send Weber back to pit reporting...

Nice video! Even though I'm not a DEI fan anymore....

  • send weber back to the wagon

  • Bring back Bob Jenkins.

  • Technically, he is back...broadcasting some not-shitty, poorly managed series that no one watches on a network that's as common as a 300-karat golden egg.

  • RIP BP

  • In my opinion, there are only 3 people who knew what they were talking about... Bestwick, Wally, and Dave Burns. Benny (though a great person and an genuine guy) and Bill Weber both SUCKED! None of them knew who drove what.

@Homestead..."There goes Bobby Labonte for the lead! Oops, I'm sorry, that was J.J. Yeley."

    -Bill Weber-

  • hey that was only one mistake, bill weber is actually pretty good at calling the big races.

  • No. Weber made many more mistakes. I think just in one race (2006 Allstate 400) he mispronounced Newman and mistakenly called Junior by the wrong name.

  • Boy that Tony Stewart. What a teammate huh!

  • What are you talking about. Tony's teammate is Bobby Labonte who goes onto his roof. Tony and Dale work well together at restrictor plate tracks but on the last lap they will go for the win if they can.

  • this is no excuse for what stewart did, he bailed on his teammate for the 8 car, that's b.s. because the top and middle lanes always run faster at talladega then the bottom, plus it made no sense to go with the 8 because he's faster then the 20 car and if he went with the 18 they both would have had a chance to win the race and leave the 8 hung out to dry. overall stewart is a bad teammate on plate tracks he helps dale jr and kevin harvick before he would help his own teammates.

  • nah the espn and fox commentaters are great

  • You are right on there, but Bestwick was no slouch either.

  • ALLEN IS THE BEST!

  • nbc just sucks, im glad that theyre not broadcasting anymore, espn/abc does a lot better job, judging from the past

  • Remember, this is back when NBC isn't crap.

  • tony stewart was being real selfish there, i mean im a diehard junior fan but for stewart to choose june over his teamnate (labonte) is really sad and thats y bobby was pissed at stewart for his selfish act

  • Tony chose the better line, teammate or not. 02 & 05' champ!

  • allen bestwick is great. go junior!

  • ^ at least he showed emotion that we hardly get these days, specially on a wreck

  • Bestwick=worth hearing. Weber=boring as hell

  • Yup. Exactly.

  • Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett, Benny Parsons= best NASCAR commentators.

  • ..alongside Ken Squier-of course

  • @ma55aracin9

    Of course. :3

  • god now i know why allen was put in the pits! HE NEVER SHUTS UP! god just casue you been on MRN doesn;t mean you should not shut the fuck up!

  • thanks for sharing this

  • wow thats wild
