Pete Townshend pioneered it, Andy Summers took it over, and handed it down to the young Peter Buck. The Edge doesn't do it, basically because The Edge is Summers with the gear but minus the musical knowledge and technique, and so he has to stand fairly still to make people take him seriously.

Stewart Copeland was one of the most brilliant drummers ever to get famous. So many Police songs are so rhythmically weird and interesting, in a way that Sting's solo stuff (however mellifluous and lovely it is) doesn't approach. A lot of the time, Summers carries the actual beat on guitar while Sting and Copeland play bass and drum stuff around him. This is no exception.
