Emery has incredibly accurate lyrics. Totally understand what Toby and the band are talking about. I love how they go all out at the end, since he's done nothing wrong and deserves better.

Umm.. Honestly. I think this song is about two people that truly loved each other and they thought they'd be together forever, but something happened and they needed to breakup. Hence the "this isn't so easy for me" part and then there's the "three sleepless nights," after the breakup maybe? I could keep on going about my interpretation. But then I'd end up rambling.. like I am now.
But whatever, I'm most likely wrong anyways. But it's definitely not about God though.
They are a Christian band and they may have very well written it about god. But they have also written the lyrics in a way that leaves them open to other interpretations, which is pretty smart and I would say completely intentional. Why just target Christian listeners with lyrics that are obviously god related. They massively increase their target audience by making it relatable to a normal break up. I think the point of music is how it makes the individual feel. Great song!

On wikipedia the band is reported to have stated that they are in fact all christians, but they felt like they were not led by god to make christian music per se. Of course that doesn't mean that they can't write a song about god, but if you look at the lyrics, "It scares me to think, that you could find takers other than me, and better than me," that doesn't particularly sound like god in my opinion.

I think it's about someone he loves (a girl) because, honestly. How many times has God "insulted and bruised" you? How many times have you held God's hand? Also, in the lyrics it says "don't say we can still be friends," because that's deffinetely a break up line right there, silly.
