Believe me im a delivery driver in cumberland the roads are so bad i have to do $800 in repairs every year to my car to the shocks struts and ne thing to do with wheel alignment and stability.
Maybe if we didn't waste tax money on fixing roads that don't need fixed but actually fixed roads FILLED with pot holes it wouldn't be so bad...also maybe if we didn't let every big business leave this city wouldn't suck so bad....not that hard to figure out.
Really a shame looking at my hometown. Let in 1962. Was married in the eleventh grade and a father. Finished H.S., military service, college, and retired at 50. Own a home in San Diego County , California with a garden shed bigger then the home I grew up in. Have another home in the mid-west with a two story colonial, and a five hundred acre backyard. Point is to all you young people in Cumberland. Nothing happens unless you make it happen.
New development in housing isn't really any better. Put money into fixing what you have, considering probably plenty of homes are vacant. That will produce a good number of jobs, provide better wages for the people who live there or are entering the workforce.
I live in the suburbs of DC and there are potholes all over the place and patches, too. It's part of having roads. There are advantages of having brick roads, too.
Yeah, cars fall apart in Cumberland...and I don't thinl that there are any more streets, I think it's official there are only patches, like Old Town Road, it's likemore patched up than a quilt! Oh, and they're trying to tell people they need to pay for the street repairs for their streets themselves. LOL! Taxes are for the mayor to drink, not to service the people! Seriously though, the are'a going to die soon anyway, I mean, half the residents are over 70!
Though wages are low, at least the minimum wage in Maryland is higher than in some places. My problem isn't with the low wages, but lack of jobs. I'm 18, and I can't get a job at McDonalds! Why? People need those jobs to feed their families, and they get priority. Face it, Cumberland's on the road to caving in on itself. It's a good looking area...(if you don't look down)...but it's not functional and basically acts as a giant retirement home.
This video played an important role in getting the city to act more promptly to address the rapidly deteriorating street system situation by issuing a $9 million general obligation bond.
Albert lost the election by a wide margin. But, he helped to place the issue back on the front burner. And, he demonstrated how effective web 2.0 technology can be in stimulating political debate.
What are you advocating, sink our heads in the sand and do nothing? When the City is aware of this problem, it will fix the problem. You can't expect the city to change unless you point it out. If it is not pointed out, the city will never solve the problem.
im a teen in LaVale and cumberlands streets are pretty bad but you cant expect repairing the cities streets to be everyones main focus. that $63 million will just keep going up the longer we wait with the rising gas prices.
One of the pictures shown was in front of my house... I personally repaired the side walk section with super heavy duty concrete... Later that week, a tractor trailer truck came up on a street not zoned for tractor trailer, could not make the turn and rolled up and down on over and over again on said sidewalk only to destroy the whole works... including drainage. I think enforcing the rules and ticketing truck drivers who act retarded for the damage may also be very helpful!
While a grant writing administrator is one solution I mentioned in the video, a Fire Corps chapter could also help with grant writing for the Fire Department.
I can say that if a volunteer fire department is proposed it is more likely to be done under the guise of consolidating emergency services with the county, but you won't hear it from me.
One thing to keep in mind is the state of the city's finances. More money than what is paid for by taxpayers goes to Public Safety. I never advocated a volunteer fire department, rather, I would like to see the city pursue a fundraising effort that would pair an chapter of Fire Corps with a foundation that could channel money from fundraising efforts to the fire department.
Our city has been falling apart forever. If they'd let some damn commercial enterprises in here like theyve been trying to FOREVER,we wouldnt be so under...and whoever posted about being paid 10/hr, how do you think it is for us poor cashiers that make 7.20? its crap! i think theyre trying to turn this whole damn town into a place to die...but albert, i gotta say no on getting rid of the paid firemen, the response from volunteer would not meet demand, nice vid tho! and good luck!
I would never want to give up the professional fire dept that we have in Cumberland. Borrow a scanner and listen to it for one day and see how often they are out on calls...including going out of the city for calls because the volunteer firefighters are at work and can't respond. I'm not downing the volunteers AT ALL. They are great, but they are volunteers and have to work. Keep up the great work CFD!!!
A sick person could go 15 minutes without help before they got there. If I was a citizen of Cumberland I would rather have a paid dept. then a volunteer dept. if my family was to get sick or my house was to catch on fire.
Ya like the volunteer thing would work...you know how many times the Cumberland Fire Dept. is taking an ambulance call out of the city because a volunteer agency or department was unable to respond. Also, if your home was on fire in the city, I think you would rather have a paid department that could arrive in a few mintues to save the majority of you property, then to wait 10 to 15 minutes on a volunteer dept. to get there and you could have doubled if not tripled the damage of your home.
Thats my point! Thanks for bringing that up. The budget is so small because we don't have the base to supply the money needed to build up the city. Maybe we need a volunteer fire department like everywhere else around the area? I don't have any problems with payming them, but if we can't afford it, we can't afford it. NO work, NO money.
This would be great if we would stop running jobs out. It would also be great if we got jobs that paid more than $10/hr. I might even have that to high. STOP squeezing blood from turnips, it doesn't work.
Should have washed your windshield just b4 filming but good commentary.

I visit Cumberland every year for the past 5 years. Never saw a problem with the streets.

Visitors rarely go on the back streets, and the examples I have provided speak for themselves.

More is needed then just repairing streets. How about some higher paying jobs. No more of this $7-$9 hour crap either.
