Well this is a bit wrong... At battle of Philippi romans did not wear imperial armors... More accurate would be chainmail Early legionary cohort in rtw...
i think the weakness of the romans in the game was lack of light infantry and Calvary. before rome would "upgrade" i would just mass the light infantry units like crazy. i would put them at my flanks in the rear. when the heavy infantry attacked, i would send them around since they could move faster.
@jgrocksforu if theres anyone you should blame for Caesar's death blame Gaius Longinus and Marcus Brutus there the guys who quite literally stabbed him in the back
ceaser was like pompey and sulla before him a dictater, when he was killed octavian ie augustus ceaser made him a god therefore making his bloodline royal and making himself the most first and most successful emporer in romes history. the word ceaser then meant emporer or king and it bacme zar in russia and kiasar in germany where all the royla fmaily generates from.
i think what u guys mean is the difference between dictator and emperor. Dictators were put in power by the senate for short periods of time if unrest or a serious challange to rome, before Ceaser there were dictators in rome. Pompey and sulla were both dictators. Ceaser was a dictator but would not give the power back to rome, the senate branded him a tirante and killed him,
Rome made Europe in my opinion despite never fully beating the best tribe (Germanic) England and Europe, the oldest and best places in the world. Birth of civilisation inc. Greece ;-)
Hehe ;) I work and live near the oldest town in britain yet have no clue as to it before the romans showed up..the hythe where i live now was laid to waste in 1066.
"Imperator" was a title usually given in the Roman Repúblic to the generals. In fact when you do the translation of "Imperator" in a republican text from latin to english it means general. "Imperator of the 6th and 7th legions" I think that in the HBO Rome series appear that kind of presentation . So Julius Caesar was actually Imperator but not in the subsequent mean of the word, during the imperial period.
Whoever said he was 1st emperor is right anyone else who says anything else is 100% wrong this is 8th grade History class. This proves my point of how dumb some ppl can be
All the Historical Chronicles say that Julius Caesar was a dictator, but they say also that he was the architect of the Empire. In fact, Octavian was the first Emperor
What would happened to captured Legionaires from the defeated army? As professional roman soldiers would they be placed back into another legion or would they be sold of as Slaves, despite them being Roman Citizens?
At this time the only heir to the brutii family was Marcus Brutus. Technically they we're what was left of the rebel republik so it would make more sense that they would be the senate. Also Cato and Scipio died in Africa after the battle of Thapsus. Cato killed himself in Utica. Scipio followed suit and told one of his generals to cut his throat.
The Republic was pretty much gone at this point. Ceaser was dictator for life but was killed, the people of rome demanded the killers be boguht to justice (in this case the republic senators.)
octavian officially became emperor as it was Giaus Julius Ceaser who had became first emperor and octavian fought Brutus and cassius after the fight with marc antony
didn't say he was the first dictator, learn to read. Emperor - "The ruler of an imperial state." He was the ruler of rome, which was an imperial state - therefore, dictator by definition.
to use the modern definition of "imperialism" to identify and define what you call an ancient "imperial state," despite the fact that at the time of Julius Caesar's titular dictatorship it was not, is doing you a disservice here. I'll remind you that Augustus, the first princeps, was never named 'dictator' as Caesar was.
imperialism is a definition that applies to ancient times as well, and is in fact a latin word. in fact, to correct my previous statement, octavian was actually declared "Imperator" not "Emperator."
perhaps you should learn to read, i am not saying what title he had, i am saying he was an emperor, i never stated he had the title of emperor. for you to go by title then you yourself are wrong, octavian was not the emperor, he was the emperator. yes, they mean the same thing, but that is precisely what you are arguing against.
you know exactly what i was saying, i even spelled it out for you. you are hung up on the idea of title, rather than the definition of the term. if you don't know the difference then you need to find a book.
@Lesnar316F5 true julius ceasar was a dictator tecnatcly (dont know how to spell it) was the first emporer while octavian was the first official emporer
@Mattavius96 He was not an emperor. He still had to listen to the Senate. Octavian was the first Roman to have absolute control over the empire. He kept the Senate, so it looked like a Republic, but in practice, he was ruler.
Julius had put an end to the great civil wars by conquering pompei, thus becoming dictator for life, the roman senate did not like this because it took away their power. brutus and his followers assasinated julius and in revenge those most loyal to julius took up arms against brutus, starting another costly war. octavian and antony were closest to julius, they fought side by side until brutus was defeated and then octavian(later augustus) took up arms against antony for total control
boudica wasn't trying to escape she was looking for battle, romans actually had 10,00 troops, some cavalry, artillery.chose their ground carefully so as not to be surrounded.
if it was on a open field things would have been different.
boudica the warrior queen of britian had over 200 thousand troops, she believe she could escape past the romans by a short cut through the forrest, however the romans had the idea she may try and out flank them so sent the whole army round, she could not out flank the romans 4 legions (20,000 troops) because of the marsh/woodlands on each side, the romans used the wedge which cut through the rebles and trampled the ones they didnt cut down... hope that clears things up (first comments)
Yes that is correct they made the wedge formation and began to push forward, when the barbarians tried to retreat, they couldnt because of the convoys of wagons with all the children and women were ( it was normal for the whole family to travel with the man to war )
So in the end their own familys caused all of their deaths
And yes the terrain around the 4 legions were heavy marshlands, and overgrown with forest so there were impassables, because if the legions were surrounded they had no chance
watling stree was about 40 years after rome captured england there warrior queen boudica led a british rebellion against rome she burned down multiple cities including ondon at watling street ahe atackked asmaller roman frce which were using thermopaly tactics
