no other 'fast drummer' uses space as well as bruford. someone like neil peart would have been trying to fill every second of this piece with notes, seemingly in an attempt to impress the audience. bruford? he may play a part simply if the song calls for it, regardless of whether or not the audience is "wowwed". of course he will then slash through the simplicity with a monsterous flourish. and that's why he' so interesting
One thing is certain. Bill Bruford is Bill Bruford. His style is his own and no one else. Lucky us we live in a time where we can have the experience to see and hear what real talent looks and sounds like.
My definate favourite part is 1:35 - 2:38, where he mostly uses bass, snare and hi-hat. In that part it is possible to really feel the groove, and the colaboration between the drums and the riff in the background. When the drums get too flashy and fast witted, it easily separates from the rest of the rythm, but I suppose Bruford has to do a little more than bass, snare and hi-hat when he first takes seat behind the kit. Amazing anyways :D
There is no such thing as the greatest drummer. Yes there have been drummers such as Max,Tony and Elvin who were in my opinion very influential. Rightfully so. Lets say Max, Tony or even Elvin had a chance to play with King Crimson, would it sound the same and would it work? The same could be said for Bill Bruford sitting in with Miles. They all bring a signature sound and style to that particular music. I really love all 4 of these drummers The one who covered more genres than any other was Tony
in the united states, most people always remember he was the best drummer in the band yes-fragile-,now thats a great release, but i like him better in the band called-king crimson-thats just my opinion--
Bill Bruford taught me more about drumming than any of my other heroes combined, but what he has done even more is influence my way of thinking about music. All the credit goes to this guy for the most valuable lessons I ever got:
1. It's about the music, not you
2. You don't HAVE to do anything, ditch your cymbals if you can't create any good music with them
3. it's not about parts on themselves, it's about the tension/difference between them, and how you jump from A to B.
I've been listening to Bruford for 30+ yrs and agree that he is indeed among the greatest of all drummers. But to proclaim that he is unsurpassed... well, have you ever so much as listened to Elvin Jones, Tony Williams or Max Roach? I met Bill many years ago and he told me that those 3 in particular were the greatest, most innovative and influential of all drummers. He regularly covers Roach's "The Drum Also Waltzes". Its okay to have favorites but blind idol worship is a terrible thing!
@Milestonzz well hello captain obvious! usually any great will name others as the true greats.
The point is when i asked Danny Carey who his favourite drummer was, he said Bill Bruford.
Alex skolnick said Paco Sery. you know who paco sery is?
Forget what Bill said, I think you're old enough be able to pick drummers you like. stand up for yourself and trust your ears rather than making capt obvious statements like "ok to have favourites but dont blind idol worship"
@Milestonzz I agree but blind idol worship of the past is just as bad. Bruford looks up to the classics as you do, but there is a new generation that NEEDS idols, this is how we grow. Bill is already part of the past but he is, with Peart, one of the most important progressive drummers that rock has ever known. Like all things in music and art, seek out what calls to you then find out what called to them, then create the new.
