out of curiosity, did you interpret the narrator as male or female? I have this theory that whoever reads the novel interprets it as their interpretation of their own gender.

the protaganist is named as Jeanette isn't she, or is the US version different?

I just read it for the third time a few days ago.
it's amazing.
though it's odd because when I first read the book, I loved the protagonist,
and now I think they're pathetic.

it almost depends on my mood when i'm reading it
but i think he/she earns back a little respect by the time i finish the book
no matter what mood i'm in
