Guatemala's recent sinkholes were due to a system of wells/drains that were created more than 30 years ago, but not taken care of. They broke down until the original structures were no longer there. There are 13 in total, all in a row through Zones 2 and 6 in Guatemala City. Don't be surprised if we hear of more sink holes opening up in the city. The one in Zone 2 was only 2 blocks from my mother in laws house.

The Sarisariñama Tepui is in Venezuela, not in Guiana. While some of those highlands belong to Guiana most of the footage shown here is from the Venezuelan side (note the Angel falls at 0:12)

If this is true, that sinkholes are formed by underground rivers carving out open pockets under the ground, then smaller pockets should still exist that have not collapsed and could easily be found with sonar or other echo location technology. Why haven't they found smaller non-collapsed pockets?
