@Xxcory11xx A good starting kit would be about a 20-gallon tank or plastic container with holes poked in the top. @waddac2 They like a variety of things from cat food to oranges. Fruit, vegetables, bread, you name it. I've heard that citrus can affect many roaches' coloration and likelihood of mating, and protein is good to help avoid cannibalism, though I've never dealt with this from hissers personally.

I only got my son two to start with and they are very small (About 5 to 8ml in length so about size of a finger nail) They seem to spend most of their time burried most of the time and Im a bit worried about them drowning when I spray daily... Absolutely adorable :) I watch cartoons with my Hisser sometimes too :p The one at 1:45 has beautiful colouring :D Also, It's refreshing to see a roach setup that's not just a tub with egg crate. Your roaches probably have a much better life in a setup like that :) It looks much more natural.

They also hiss to surprise, confuse and ward off predators, to communicate, and for mating. Their hiss is varied and useful in many aspects of their lives :)

@carpetbeetle98 The males and females get along fine, so they can be kept together all the time. Unless you have a limit to how many you want; then I'd say that might work. Otherwise they do fine on their own and you don't have to do anythign special.

I'm 25, I live in my own house. But I did have them while I lived with my parents, and all it took was teaching them some logic about how completely harmless and out of the way they are. You might try and ask them what they have against hissers other than their appearance and bad name, and try educating them on the facts. Most people choose to be ignorant about bugs because it's just easier than educating themselves, so you might have to pound it into their heads a little :P

Very easy to breed, yes :) It just took mine a very long while for some reason, but now that they've started, they just can't seem to stop! Plenty of heat and humidity helps.

Funny story actually, one day I had way too many coffees and I took one out to show a crowd at the Museum to help them get over their fears. It was annoyed and hissed and arched his back.Suddenly startled, I followed my instinct and threw it.....into the crowd. It was as if a grenade went off.

Just curious, have you bred them before, im aware of the 60 days prior live hatching etc, what i would like to no is, are thy easliy bred to have offspring? do you have to make the right conditions, or will they just breed like crazy! thanks in advance!

Very easy to breed, yes :) It just took mine a very long while for some reason, but now that they've started, they just can't seem to stop! Plenty of heat and humidity helps.

I don't get why people tweak right out about them being nasty.. Your average roach is so nasty because of... Garbage! Madagascar cockroaches, though, have the whole little mites deal going on that keep them clean. Unless I'm mistaken of course. *Shrug*
Still, very spectacular! Them roaches are A-Ok, and cool like the other side of the pillow. :B

Anyways, what amazed me the most in this video is that the roaches really love you :o It's as if they were hugging you or something, you must really treat them with love! Nice video :D

Haha I work with roaches, they tend to grab onto anything when they're on their back. They don't often like to be on their back open and vulnerable I guess. Nice to see someone showing some love for these guys!! They're surprisingly lovely!

LOL I hear ya, it took me about 3 months to get over the fear so I can relate surely. Funny story actually, one day I had way too many coffees and I took one out to show a crowd at the Museum to help them get over their fears. It was annoyed and hissed and arched his back.Suddenly startled, I followed my instinct and threw it.....into the crowd. It was as if a grenade went off.

Hahha thanks. It's going in the books. It's funny when I introduce them to people. Children get over their fears very fast if there are any at all...while parents have YEARS and YEARS of fear built up. It's always interesting to watch.
The little roachy that I threw only ran about a foot then stopped. I think he realized our building was a lot like Shawshank to him and I scooped him up again.

They are awesome! I have 5 different species of roaches as pets, and Madagascar hissing ones are my fave. I have 2 males, 2 females and 9 "babies". :}
