  • Yes. On my blog at BanjoButch.blogspot.com there is a link to the Earl Scruggs book from which I learned to play the song back in 1975 or so. I am pretty sure I still play it the same way. It is called Earl Scruggs and the 5 string banjo.

  • Hey Butch, I'm wondering if there's any tab to this that you could link.

  • Thanks. The roll is a basic alternating thumb, but you get the extra sound by doing a push-off on the third string. Push down and towards the 4th string and release the string as you push towards the 4th string. You are basically plucking the 3rd string with your left middle finger. Some people probably do a pull-off, which is the same motion but towards the 2nd string.

  • I really like the sound of that banjo, what is it? Also, I like the speed of your instructional video, but I was wondering, (since I can't see your other hand) what kind of roll are you using on that little C part where you bounce off the 3rd string? I have been trying to get that part down, and for some reason mine sounds different.
