  • me encantó! Es muy linda melodia. Dedicada a mi abuela Irene! Te amo abuela! Desde ARGENTINA! genio Willie!

  • @diseru1 I meant Willie Genius!!! lol

  • Forgive my ignorance, but who is the back up singer on guitar behind Willie on the chorus?

  • @BenjiMordino Not sure who you are referring to but if it's the Kris Kristofferson lookalike, it is Jody Payne. I would not have known except someone added a note to that effect two years ago and I quote from him "He's got sort of a Kristoffersonian flair to him though!" :-)

  • Beautiful.

  • love it :)

  • Love it

  • I'm not a country fan, but I admit this might be the best version. Willie is kind of the man in a way. What can I say?

  • Love all the history of the singers, remember Woody Guthie, singing This Land is Your Land. This is just wonderful to listen to, love Willie forever.

  • I can't help but hear Sinbad singing "I wish I had some Dairy queen" - When he and Phil Hartman are singing this song in the car in Houseguest.

  • I never heard this song til earlier in the week with Jimmy Buffett singing it. Very timely.

  • I have a feeling that I'll be seeing Irene (Hurricane) in my dreams tonight!

  • song written by Ledbetter, apparently about gambling.

  • That harmonica player has been with Willie a while. He's from Oklahoma!!

  • pootis penser here

  • Love it- especially good during Hurricane Irene - and of course once the storm passes by (after this weekend!)

  • This is an old Irish folk song.

  • Bristol Rovers football club's anthem, great tune. Been sung by thousands at a time at every game since the 50's. Love it

  • @ilovetosingaallday no sugar it was by Luddie leadbelly he played the 12 string guitar

  • @Aquahoma "Huddie Ledbetter" aka "Leadbelly" also played the accordion. :-)

  • @Aquahoma well technically Leadbelly's version was just the first known recording... He also played it alot and made it popular, but doesn't claim to have written it. Beautiful song. Leadbelly's version is a bit different as well.

  • kids really do not know what is great and good. This was good and great.

  • Willie's version of this song makes me want to change my name to Irene . . .

  • Great version of Goodnight Irene also nice to see Leadbelly getting credit for this lovely tune.

    love the song

see you in my dreams wille

  • Like the harmonica solo! Man, Willie has been knockin' it out his way for alot of years.

  • Great version, vintage Willie N. ! The chord progression is so simple, yet beautiful. I also love Leadbelly's version, Jerry Lee Lewis and Mississippi John Hurt's. It's interesting to see the different styles.

  • There was a brave cover here in the UK by Bryan Ferry (former leader of Roxy Music), but in a strange way he was almost hampered by his unique singing voice. You heard it?

  • Nice Song well sung, well remembered from my youth

  • Geweldige zanger

  • is that kris kristofferson on the left?

  • That's Jody Payne, he's been in Willies band for a while, though I think he's retired in just the last year or two. He's got sort of a Kristoffersonian flair to him though!

  • Thanks for the note. I have oftern wondered who it was! :-)

  • Like cycimian I grew up with party singing and remember that song well. I have an aunt called Irene and it was enevitable that "Goodnight Irene" would be sung when she was at one of our sing-songs!

    I like Willie's version!

  • thanks for your note pastore 0506 :-)

  • Tears in my eyes, it's just beautiful, signed Irene of Newquay, (thanks Tom)

  • Great song and Great singer!

Thank you Floyd for sharing with me!

And thank you UISTMAN59 for making this video for us!

  • I cry every time I listen to this song...the song is so timeless

  • man thats a beautiful story to tell to your grandchildrens children music does different to us all in different ways. bless you and yours

  • Willie rules!

  • A classic from a classic... thank you for sharing!

  • You're welcome. Thanks for the note :-)

  • My parents sang this song to me over 50 years ago. My name is Irene and I love this version

  • Guess im showing my age. As a kid i can remeber when the adults got together for a party singing was on the venue. This song was one of the classics like Old Black Joe was. Do i miss those times. Perhaps not the times. But the Company was great.

  • I love this version....thanks.

  • Gotta love the magic harmonica

  • Indeed! What do think of the harmonica playing on my latest posting "Scottish Tradition?! : Blues Harp"

  • I did not know what this song meant until I went through a divorce.

  • this song takes me back to my mom, RIP mom...we'd sing this sing after some drinks, because, her dad would sing it for his sister...to this day when i hear this song, its time to drag my ass to bed...todays music cant hold a candle to the old stuff

  • UP THE GAS !!

Check out the great man himself (Ledbelly)

  • YOU JUST SAID IT MAN!

  • This is way beyond good.

  • My mum always sang this to my sister and I, along with Scarlet ribbons. Now we sing it to our children.

  • This is the anthem of Bristol Rovers for over 50 years and to hear it sung by 40,000 at Wembley is awesome

Good Luck and UP THE GAS !! (ROVERS FANS ARE KNOWN AS GASHEADS !!)

  • 10 tons

  • One hell of a singer!

  • Willie is the last living legend!

  • ahh he is that...and too bad it is. Todays singing artists cant hold a flame to these old timers.

  • exactly. todays music is ok but not country!

  • my mom and dad used to play music every weekend and ended with this song every time. this brings me back. willie nelson was one of their favorites as well as mine.

  • Willie's version is one of the great ones too, right up there

    with Leadbelly's and The Weavers'

  • ...my mom sang this to the 6 of us everynite during our childhood.....would love to hear her sing it just one more time....sweet...sweet post....Super vocal Willie.....makes me weep for joy...

  • Honestly, what kind of comment would you expect from a Johnny Horton fan? Not an intelligent one, I hope.

  • Play nice with the other kids out there! I like Johnny Horton's 'North to Alaska' - I don't recall hearing 'Sink the Bismarck' or any of the other hits.

  • I like Horton's voice a lot... but wasn't he one of those guys who released ultra right-wing racist albums? Or have I confused him with someone else?

  • There is a racist song by a 'Johnny Rebel' and although it is on P2P sites as Johnny Horton or David Alan Coe, it was never recorded by either of them. Johnny Horton died 5th Nov 1960 before the earliest known recordings of the song in question.

  • Willie is a nice man, a great gitarplayer, songwritwer and singer. Bless him!

  • they're the true singers sir.

  • Nothing wrong with a tad of swag my old fellow..After all that's how I finished up with this name!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this! Willie just reaches out and touches the soul! May God Always Bless Willie & Family.

  • Up The Gas

    C'mon you Rovers

    Goodnight Irene
