  • the music is just the whole song twice, this version is a lot more intimate than the album version, but that's because it wasn't mixed at all. It sounds so stripped down because this was just a live demo. All live instrumentation and vocals. The album version just cut the beginning, pushed back certain sounds, added a theremin, and changed the equalizer for every instrument. The best thing is is that Carl mixed it so you can see what he liked more.

  • Wow, I'd never heard that before, thanks for uploading this, it's one of the most intense songs I've ever heard in my life!

  • by far the best arrangement of this track...has this version been seen an official release?

  • This song is very profound...it gives me chills !

  • why have i only just discovered this... too much listening to music and not enough reading research... wow I am really learning my lesson now! And why do I always read comments saying "I'm only 14" etc?... When I was 14 I thought I was old!... And I was shrugging off mainstream pop when I was 8 so there!! :p

  • THIS IS SO MY STORY

  • The word I have on this piece is that Stephen Desper, the sound engineer, created this wondrous lead-in, under Brian's instruction, guidance & steerage. It really is one of the most magical, magnificent openings to any Wislon song which I think I've ever heard .. & that is certainly saying something. The fact that the rest of the Boys didn't like it is utterly irrelevant. This is listening MAGIC !!

  • @colindominy I think that may be a long bow, to say the boys didnt like it. Correct me if i am wrong, but my theory is that it did not make the album because the record compnay wanted to make the album as commercial as poosible, given this was a lull period in their popularity. Whatever the case may be, the engineer is responsible for a large part of music (especially today) and therefore if this was not the "original verision" it certainly should have been .

  • @ilsy74 According to Brian, the boys DIDN'T like it...."Mike laughed out of disgust. What a f$#&^*g downer! he said. Carl and Al agreed. Crushed by the rejection, I walked out of the studio knowing the song was good but that I was unable to defend myself. Several days later, I went into the studio by myself and recorded "Till I Die" anyway. Eventually, out of respect, but mostly because they needed material, the song was included on the album." - Brian Wilson (The album was 1971's Surf's Up)

  • @ilsy74 Where does the Moog appears? I only hear Hammond B3 Organ...

  • point is from not hearing it as FIN! product.....to me this is awsome

so quit with crap remarks......shut yer hole and enjoy.

  • I loved it when it was new and I love it today.

  • Love this long version !!!

  • shit's insane!

  • This is possibly one of the best songs Brian wrote. It really captures an emotion I think everyone has experienced from time to time perfectly, feeling small and insignificant in a giant world. One of my favourite beach boys tracks for sure.

  • hey im 9 1/2 and listen to this stuff a lot. I hate that other crap like lady gaga and the rest of the garbage. the beach boys are definitly my favorite. i listen to this stuff everyday all the time. oh ya, katy perry should go put her "california GURLS" in the trash. brian can actually write write songs, but not just any songs, GOOD songs. the beach boys are very underated now, im am the only kid in my school who has heard a beach boys song all the way through thats not fun fun fun

  • @Legoairborne101 wow - i dont know how to thank you.... Thanks for being individual. But times are better than they used to. When i was 15 I was the only 1 in my class liostening to the Beatles. The others listed to motley crue and Bros.... U dont hear much of them any more, well at least not Bros. Thank god!

  • @ilsy74 Well I like both Motley Crue and Beach Boys. And believe it or not, I still listen to 2 or 3 songs by Bros on a very rare occasion.

  • @ilsy74 ...there is hope for this world...thanks champion!!!

  • Effing Brilliant, the most underrated gem by the greatest '60's American pop genius

  • im 14 and i wonder why this isnt played on the radio instead of shit like justin bieber

  • @planetraptor420 WOW ~you are very smart 14 year old.

  • @planetraptor420 same here, i'm 14 and I think that this is absoultely the best song ever written.

The Steve Desper Mix (this mix) is even better!

  • @planetraptor420 Don't wonder why love. Just be happy that these recordings are still available today. I think it rare for good songwriters to come out today, and I'm sure maybe they're out there today, but back in the 60's great songwriters like Brian Wilson were the norm. I was lucky. Back then, great songs were coming out of the walls left and right.

  • @planetraptor420 Because you suck

  • @Mr11MUSICMAN : I think this is a great song. I also believe that Justin Bieber sucks.

  • @planetraptor420 : There is hope for the world yet. Thank you for your intelligent comment.

  • @planetraptor420 Because everyone over the age of 21 nowadays is a "Creeper". The little girlz that listen to Justin Bieber wouldn't be a fan of creepers.

  • This ISN'T the "original mix." An engineer came up with this mix on his own time. The BBs weren't sold.

  • @peterbagge What's the difference?Brian in still playing the moog, and the engineer did the mix before anyone else could here the record. It's not like it was done in 2009.

  • Forget the Beatles, the Beach Boys are the best band from the 60's in my opinion... They influence my music in a big way... Check out my songs!

  • @AJProductionisms I wouldn't say forget the Beatles, they both had a HUGE impact on music and an impact on the times.

  • Brian, you are the best!!

Even without the voices it sounds great!

  • From "Sunflower"..the moving lyrics are spooky and Tearjerking!

  • @mrmjb1960 Surf's Up!

  • Such a weight for someone that young to try and keep up with the greatest comptition ever!! By himself to...No Martin, heck...not even a person in the band at that point.

  • Silly to compare Brian and John. I'm sure there's was mutual admiration thing. Two masters that have enriched our lives greatly with their artistry and love. Peace to all of you.

  • No dislikes.....fuckin' right

  • A masterpiece-Love it.

  • any idea where to find this song for purchase/ipod? i own surf's up album and this version's way better.

  • @ShiftyCat Yeah man, you gotta get the Soundtrack of Endless Harmony, released in 1998. It has some of the greatest Beach Boy rarities you are ever likely gonna hear, except may be Land Locked and Pet Sounds stuff.

  • @ShiftyCat itunes endless harmony i think

til i die alternate alternant mix

  • @ShiftyCat Agree with ilsy74, Endless Harmony has got the best of the unreleased versions of older BB songs. Get the CD and be sure to get the DVD!!

  • Exquisite. Brian sublimates the hell and abuse of his father's evil wrath and violence into a thing of beauty.

Brian's depression and illness were natural & normal manifestations, considering all that he went through. Read "Wouldn't It Be Nice".

  • @apollowoman To be fair, though, Brian didn't *actually* write Wouldn't It Be Nice. That book was ghost written by Eugene Landy and someone else.

  • God - even on a posting like this people are insulting each other! Does this music not have any positive effect on you? Is nothing sacred?

  • no dislikes :)))))))))))))

  • thats so nice such perfection i must be getting old i loved that song i listen to it ofton thats for posting

  • I always forget how good this original mix is until I hear it again.

  • One thing I first noticed about Brian is how he was no where near the instrumentalist AS the composer. That you don't have to be one to be the other. Composing is great imagination and then the ability to have the others believe you are not full of s... when you propose one of your yet to be born idéas. Goes for many things I guess ...

  • A poignant work...I feel it just with the backing track alone.

  • Who cares about John Lennon? Brian Wilson was the greatest composer of his era, and possibly of the last century.

  • @tinkdnuos What a foolish comparison? How can u separate the 2? Anyway, lennon wihtout Wilson would have made it, but Wilson without Lennon? Without Rubber Soul and Revolver? They were both as much part of the 20th century.

  • @ilsy74 But I'm not the one who made the comparison.

And Wilson without Lennon would have been juuuuust fine, my friend.

Now, Lennon without George Martin? I'm not so sure...

  • @ilsy74 The Beach Boys already "made it" before they even heard of the Beatles...even their early simple songs display accomplished pop craft. Second, they didn't suddenly progress with Pet Sounds, though that was a giant leap. Brian Wilson was already incorporating more complex musical arrangements and instruments into the music before, particularly starting with the Today album, which came out a few months after Beatles for Sale. :)

  • @Jonee90210 Of course. Beach Boys today is an amazing record. and their progression was always there whilst Dennis was alive, especially throughout the 60s when they were so original. But let's not forget the Beatles, who were probably the most responsible for setting the bar so high for everyone. I can't imagine the Beach Boys getting to the heights that they did especially without Rubber Soul.

  • @ilsy74 Well, we should keep in mind a couple of things: first, BW was impressed with Rubber Soul primarily for its cohesiveness, and second, at the time he only knew of the US version. You know, the one that jettisoned several tracks and added a couple of Help songs so Capitol could push it as a folk record. :) Oh, great vid here btw!

  • @ilsy74 Wilson definitely would have "made it", as he took influence from other people much more then he did The Beatles.

  • @tinkdnuos Oh you foolish foolish man.

  • @surrealillness How so? Because I don't worship at the plastic altar of Lennon?

Why can't we enjoy this incredible piece of music? Once again, I really don't care about the Lennon comparisons. That's the point I originally tried to make. You foolish, foolish child.

  • @tinkdnuos You're asking me why we can't enjoy? because i come here to listen to this song and i see some idiot's comment that gets too exited and has no idea what hes saying, so if come here to "enjoy" listen and enjoy quietly. you're not making any point go and study music professionally and then we'll see what comments your mind will come up with.

the truth is brian wrote some very inspiring and musically genius music but its still a league under the Beatles.

  • @surrealillness It seems to me that English is not your first language so I will assume that you understandably failed to grasp the context of my original comments. I have no wish to argue with you over the Beatles vs. Brian Wilson. De gustibus non est disputandem.

But I think you should be less confrontational in the future. No one forced you to respond to my comments, or even to read them. Relax.

  • @tinkdnuos No English is not my main language, nevertheless, perhaps you would like to show me where i've made a mistake?

i understand your original text quite well since its pretty much retarded, you dont wish to go over the beatles vs beach boys argument? then again, next time dont write such stupid comments, you hypocrite.

something did force me into responding to you, musical justice and common sense.

  • @surrealillness You don't want to give it up, do you?

Check the chronology of the comments. There were quite a few people arguing about Brian Wilson vs. John Lennon, and somehow things got as far as McCartney vs. Lennon. All of these things are irrelevant to this upload, which should be enjoyed for what it is. And it's beautiful. My original comment was a response to that.

But whiny little children like you have to ruin it for everyone else. I think it's past your bedtime.

  • @tinkdnuos erm... I don't know about this. I LOVE Wilson, i've read his auto-biography and i've also re-constructed SMiLE. But Lennon is just as amazing, a day in the life proves this. Also, his solo work was just as personal and beauitful as Wilsons. I'm a composer/songwriter myself, this song, and mix, highly influenced one of my songs. Just enjoy the incredible music.

  • @ClassicRockerSr101 Like surrealillness, please check the chronology of the comments to give yourself a little context. I DON'T CARE about John Lennon. I didn't bring him up. I was trying to END stupid arguments about John Lennon.

It's kind of ridiculous that you people are getting so confused (and so bent up) about it. It's REALLY frustrating that you're blaming me for your own literacy issues.

  • FUCKINH LOVE IT

  • This isn't the original mix. The engineer came up with this on his own and the BB rejected it, preferring how they'd done originally (which is how it was released on LP)

  • cant stop listening

  • 3:43 to 3:50 amazing. and all the rest of the song too.

  • Rock On Great Man!

  • Only a dipshit would say McCartney wrote deep and meaningful songs and Lennon wrote drippy nonsense. More like the other way around.

  • @crizzy71 What does it matter... lets just sit back and enjoy Brian Wilson's music!

  • @ilsy74 Thanks for keeping things positive!

  • @crizzy71 RE Lennon- McCartney; Count me a dipshit, then.

  • @crizzy71 who cares about lyrics listen to the music

  • @crizzy71 We all love this song? Dont we? Fuck Lennon Mc Cartney!!! Love to see Brian take the wind through his hair...

  • @ClubViking63 Believe me, I looooove this song! :)

  • @crizzy71 They both wrote deep meaningful song and drippy nonsense in equal measure.

  • @crizzy71

I completely agree man, I've just compiled myself a list of Beatle tracks which i enjoy (non of them are "ditties")

and almost all are by lennon. of around 30 tracks only 4-5 were by mccartney

  • Nice basswork in the first part...doesn't really get its due in the final mix.

  • Nice bass line (by Carol Kaye)? Anyway, this song is beautiful, tragic, and speaks to my condition. This is a masterpiece of a recording. Thank you for posting it.

  • This isn't the original mix, but rather an experiment made my one of their engineers on his off hours. It quickly made the rounds as a bootleg.

  • @peterbagge Stephen Desper

  • @peterbagge thanks for the clarification

  • @peterbagge

According one CD booklets, This IS the first mix which Stephen Desper did on his own time the same day they laid down the final parts. They passed on it and did or supervised the release version. This appears on the Endless Harmony Soundtrack.

  • Beautiful song about questioning our place in the world. Absolutely solid melodic poetry. Thanks for the video. Take it easy.

  • Tindersticks must have been influenced by this

  • Brian, Carl and Dennis should have fired Mike in 1966, he was as useless as an anus on the forehead. Then they would have never got to be a nostalgia act, and would be remembered as highly as the Beatles. Unfortunatly I can't change history...

  • yeap, always found this song rather profound.

  • Mike Love was talking through his a**e when he dissed this masterpiece. The words are deep and meaningful, the melody and harmony, perfection, something Mike wouldn't know if it smacked him in his stupid, egotistical face. Brian (IMO) outclasses almost all songwriters. After all the emotional problems he had to endure, and the tragic loss of his two beloved brothers, way before their '3 score years and ten', what he penned, never fails to astound me. Agreed??

  • @Helen25243 Lennon/McCartney, the Gibb Brothers and Michael Jackson are in the same class.

  • @ilsy74

McCartney yes, Lennon NO. He was just the image of the peace and hippy movement, McCartney wrote beautiful and meaningful songs, Lennon, drippy nonsense. Michael Jackson..ehh maybe. Thriller was his magnum opus but other than that his solo career didn't compare to his career with his brothers. The Bee Gees, i do agree, they are talented.

  • @Rchayes88 Oh no lennon was the sole centre of the Beatles. The beautiful spirit of them. Have u notice the Beatles could never re-create the magic they once had alone or together, without Lennon. Lennon was the inspirer of Humanity in a dark and cold world.

  • @Rchayes88

McCartney wrote turds like Yesterday, Here There and Everywhere and I Will. Lennons songs had one trademark: constant quality. Besides, John never made a bad solo album, while McCartney's solowork is characterized by weak spots.

  • @Rchayes88 I agree RE Lennon v McCartney, and Bee Gees too. Fuck John Lennon; TOYALLY OVERRATED. Lennon was never sincere about anything and I really see what happened to him as a result of his karmic BO. It wasn't instant, but it was karma.

  • @Rchayes88 i just read your post and i agree with you 100% peace Des

  • @Rchayes88 u have half right..Michael jackson is a one man machine..brian wilson held back the beach boys and the beach boys held back brian wilson so they didnt get to reach their full potential..they could've been as big as the beatles..

  • @ilsy74 lol.....yes Lennon AND McCartney....the Gibb BROTHERS...and as for MJ..well Blame it on the Boogie, Thriller and Rock with You were all written for him by english guys.....Brian Wilson can do it on his own, he has to have a special place aside from the others....has to! : )

  • @thesunreport most of mj's classics were written by him and dey were masterpieces

  • @ilsy74 ok michael jackson & maccartney/lennon,but the gibb brothers?seriously? SMH.

  • who wrote the words?

  • @omegamanroderick Brian wrote this song all by himself!!

  • U N T I L I DIE. I love that editing of voices. Amazing.

  • This Mix was made by steve desper. One of the enginers.

I was age 8 when i first got the same emotion like this tune.

  • such a brilliant song. The organ reminds me of 'That's Not Me' from Pet Sounds.

  • amazing amazing amazing!

  • Goose bump city. This is magic stuff. Thank God for BW.

  • @harwicke Goose bump city indeed! It works every time for me. The mad genius hit it out of the park with this one. Ever feel like that cork on the ocean?

  • Remember when this was first played on WMMR FM Radio, Phila . . . not this version but still! Deeper than the ocean in my opinion. And the melody? Chocolate Acid.

  • Mmmm, chocolate acid.

  • This is the closest as to heaven as you'll get. Luv ya Brian.

  • @brittonstreet . You got it perfectly right.. Heaven.

  • A masterpiece.

  • melody to "pipeline" at 3:37

  • @robfilardo I have been listening to this song since it came out and I never noticed that before. It's got to be deliberate. Thanks for pointing it out, it has made the song even better for me. :)

  • Comment removed

  • really we are all a cork on the ocean of mankind

  • There's a seven-minute version of this song on a few bootlegs... anyone want to post that on here too?

  • @NyeTunes It's not so good man

  • No joke. I literally just cried. Thank you Brian Wilson.

  • This is one of those that gets you real good the first 4 or 5 times you hear it. That's one of the criteria for a perfect pop song, and he wrote at least half a dozen of them which is more than anyone not named Paul McCartney can say.

  • Comment removed

  • Ah, yes... the silly little man, Mike Love desperate to pull down or at least wound his very creator. How does it feel, Mike? The knowledge that the entire world is onto you and your lies and your jealousy. And knowing, at the end, that without Brian Wilson there would never have been a "Mike Love" in any larger sense than a name in a yearbook.

Brian Wilson, like "the Dude", ABIDES!

Thank you for your gifts to the world, Brian. Without you our lives would have been much smaller, indeed.

  • Total awareness, knowing it all will end soon.

  • groovy on 3 hits of acid right now and its the first time hearing this, amazing1

  • Chills. This could have only been created by a very special person with a gift for the world.

  • Blending of vocals of Brian and Carl...superb

  • This one cut equals all of SGT. PEPPER

  • If you talk to Paul McCartney, he'll convince you that it *betters* all of Sgt. Pepper.

  • la mejor cancion de la historia

  • It gives me chills. I just finally met Brian after what 40 yrs & I'm 47...so I was lovin' the music of BW & the Beach Boys all my life <3 That BB harmony gets me every time. Totally amazing!!!

  • wow! What is he like??

  • OMG words hard to describe. He's so tall (6'4') & I was so nervous but my heart was lovin every minute. He seems happy to meet fans but can't get very close for too long. I felt his arm & hand around my shoulders shaking. I felt bad for his shaking but it was a reality check for me to feel his touch on me. What a privilege to meet & greet & thank him personally after all these yrs. He talked but we were rushed before the show. After the show he scoots. But excellent concert/show as usual!

  • That must've been incredible, even if he could only take a moment.

  • Stephen Desper mixed this version.

He was the BB's recording engineer on "Sunflower" and "Surf's Up".

  • What version is this? I like it!

  • Holy shite! Fucking Amazing!

  • None of these quotes are necessary, because Brian Wilson is one of the greatest GENIUSES of the 20th century, PERIOD!!! Of all the great pop composers, very few can even hold a candle to the great Brian Wilson! He truly was , BLESSED!

  • Regardless of who created it, this mix works very well for me.

This is such a poignant and powerful song, this version in particular.

I have not heard it in years. Thanks for posting it!

  • FYI, this isn't the "Original" mix. The guy who mixed this album made this version for himself. So, it should be called a "Vanity" mix.

And btw, that guy in the photo looks like Townes Van Zandt!

  • I went to a mandrake memorial concert and they had townes van zandt as an opening act.

  • Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers

  • Who is the person in the same picture with Brian at 00:20.

  • I am not so sure that this is the original mix. I recall that Steve Desper created this version, and it was rejected by the band for the album. Anyway, I had the pleasure of hearing it on L.A. radio station KMET before the album was released. Jim Ladd introduced it as a once-in-lifetime opportunity for the listeners to hear something incredible that might not ever be heard again. Then...he played this version on the air.

  • brian has more talent in his pinky finger, than phil has in his entire being,i would take any of brians best stuff over spectors best,

  • Yea. And his entire being wasnt much either.

  • Dette er en test.

  • Blows the mind and get the mentals back in place.

  • Brian is the man. I hate phil spector for all the nasty stuff he said about brian in his last book. saying he was untalented etc etc. I think this song and many others show despite brians humbleness towards Spector talent wise he was head and shoulders above him. And a hell of a better person.

  • Brian sure as hell didn't murder anybody, that's for sure.

  • Except his own genius. The Brian that was died with the creation of this song. That's the way I look at it, anyway.

  • Bruce Johnston remembers Brian "playing it for the band and one member of the band didn't understand it and put it down, and Brian just decided not to show it to us for a few months. He just put it away. I mean, he was absolutely crushed. The Brian that was died because of Mike Love. He opposed Good vibrations and later taking credits. And probably Pet Sounds to. Smile for sure.

  • that's why everyone hates mike love. he prevented brian from reaching his full potential and now he claims to have been supportive of brian's endeavors which is bullshit. imagine how much greater the beach boys would have been if mike love would have just shut the fuck up.

  • @Geekernator21

    Amen.

    I mean.... shit.

  • @runeguldberg That's exactly what I think. To me it's not unlike what happens when a parent or a sibling puts down a family member and the wonders why that person clammed up later. Sad. I'm glad Brian made his way back and found his voice again, despite Mike Love's attempts to hold him back and discount him. Till I die is haunting but still beautiful.

  • I loved Phil in the early 60's but boy is he unhinged! Never could understand why he dissed Brian so much...jealousy perhaps? Brian has no need to be deferential to Spector. Let's face it...it wouldn't be difficult to be a better person than Spector.

  • Phil Spector was'nt even in the same league as the great Brian Wilson, Period!!!

  • You should listen to River Deep - Mountain High before saying that.

  • 100% agree

dang it, i'll have to pop in smile (hope a Blu Ray comes out) tomorrow.

  • Spector made great music anyway. Brian had a fixation on Phil and his music.

  • Spector had a run of hits in the late fifties, early sixties with his wall of sound. However he was a one trick pony and Brian went past him with Pet Sound, Good vibrations and great songs like this and Spector didnt like it. Spector is a bitter nasty person, where Brian is a kind caring and extremly talented spirit.

  • @ThePeacepoet phil specter is now getting all the black dick his filthy mouth can handle!

  • heart beaking but gives your hope in music.

  • I like both your "Till i Die" posts, ilsy74. Again, thank you for sharing these with us. It is much appreciated!

    Best,

    Jim
