Vanick you absolute hero, I spent 6 months in Ghana and wanted to be a mate too, but I dont think they'd like a female on. Yen ko yen ko. You go obruni!
Wow mate, well done! I've only ever taken a trotro ones the last couple of times i went to ghana and it wasnt the best experience. I really cant beleive you did this! kudos to you mate.
@mrgcnlive2010 So only those who accept Jesus can enter heaven? And anyone else would go to hell? So this God of yours who is so loving and forgiving would send the vast majority of humanity to eternal hellfire and damnation?
So you know this and sit there to judge God? Who are you to question Him? He hasn't come to your house to call you, if you think you can't handle the gospel, go on living your sinful life!!!
It isn't by force...on judgement day you cant say you didn't know or plead ignorance. And who told you that our God is so loving and forgiving?
His forgiveness is always reserved for the repentant, and His love for those who seek Him.
I wonder if anything in your life is worth trading an eternity for...
I know a trotro driver and he once jokingly invited me to be his mate. When he said I wouldn't be the first obroni to do this job, I didn't believe him...until now!
i studied at the univ of ghana spring 2007 and lots of black americans including myself tended to get involved in the business ventures in the country and still maintain those relationships. and i was a political science major! i love ghana and miss it ohhh. and my twi is near disappeared :-( VIVA l'Afrique!!!
wow! the social implications of it all. still i think that if he did it strictly for the learning and to enhance his studies then its all good. there are others who only do this kinda stuff to make a mockery of the people who make a living from this kind of work though. they do it just for laughs. i esp thought it was funny how the news anchors laughed at this, taking into account the stigma that goes along with this kind of work.
I lived in Ghana for 5 years working in an orphanage in WA and as a young American the experience will remain a part of me till my last breath. I love Ghana and people of all colors, creed or nationality. To me it's all about love for mankind and one's readiness to learn from their experiences in life.
Vanick, you did good son ! God Bless the USA and the people of Ghana.
To all who are not feeling Vanick's experience, shame on you ! This young man went to Ghana to study, fell in love with an occupation reserved for drop outs and deemed demeaning by so called High class Ghanaians. At least Ghanaians get to see that there is dignity in hardwork and there's nothing wrong with an "oburoni" working as a mate.
Stop all you jealous and hating Ghanaians. Today's anthropology studies involves experiencing the researched target,so Van's work in Ghana is not anything strange. I am surprised a responder said he doesnt not like using trotro in Ghana. That is his choice, but I can tell one everyone that in terms of security and personal safety, a trotro is much safer than a taxi, recognizing the fact that armed robbery is high in some Ghanaian highways.
This is amazing,I just started accessing youtube a week ago and I am surprise about the videos I've been missing.good stuff. It's interesting what people are doing and the experiences they have had. Listen Van, your deed/thought/experience is your choice and don't mind all these negative comments, I personally loved it, very interesting and different. I mean I don't know why people are making such a big deal about it. It's like being introduced to a new dish and wanting to have a taste.much love
Driver said: people like the idea of a foreigner, especially an American, being the tro tro (van) mate (assistant). Even if they are going in the opposite direction, people still join the tro tro and go all the way to the end of the route and come back in the opposite direction.
i just returned from ghana and don't understand why everyone hates on the trotros and the villagers. you're all in that country together and it's certainly not as if the rich people are more honest or have more integrity! i got a lot of looks as an obroni riding the trotros... why would i take a taxi when i can save money for something more important by riding the way everyone else does?
We hate on trotros cos chances are if you take one your clothes will be ripped on some sharp object jutting out of nowhere (I know this from experience). We hate on villagers cos they're always visiting without notice and asking for money. Yeah maybe some of the rich aren't honest, but don't be fooled into thinking the poor are! We take taxis for our own safety and comfort. I'd rather not be stuck in some trotro mate's armpit. So there. Judge all you want.
bruin03...i agree with u...wat u said is soo true and im happy dat this vannick guy is appreciating the job..and all those haters calling him names needs to stop..ok..he is having fun and i asure yall dat Ghana is fun..keep it up Vannick...and yea he rocked the twi,lol...and he is American not Dutch
If African brothers can go abroad and work as drivers and conductors, I think it is good that this kid can go to Africa and experience the other side of the coin.
Nice work! I was a Legon exchange student myself and grew to love 'tro-tro' culture, I heard about the legendary "Obruni mate" but didn't know he was for real...
omg the white man will stop at nuthing first they take the black man with some educations jobs now they want to take the poor uneducaited mans job why nahh this aint right lol but dude is crazy
this shit is fucked up.i mean its amusing alright but it aint worth da evening news....i mean we got more serious shit happenin out there n we wastin tyme on this.
So with all your mighty thought, you think this is just the main topic of that evening news? That is the last part of the news called SHOW BIZ. They are showing for people tolearn from that University guy and be proud to get something in return as an educated person. THINK, WHY DID YOU EVEN COMMENT ON THIS?
I sometimes don't get people man, how is this messed up for real? At the end of the day, 1 - the riders get to experience something interestingly different (than their normal daily routine) and are happy about it, 2- good business for the trotro master, and 3- the guy is learning...there is always going to be some people out there bringin their own personal negativity to it (or showing off their knowledge of the history of the word..)
u mother fucker....why is this fucked up. i won't be surprise u were a regular tro tro patron in Ghana. wherever u are, if i find out i would let them deport you
I wonder if white people will be amazed if I volunteer for a similar job in Germany??? well, it seems like blacks are more amazed when whites volunteer to do the jobs we despise!!!
exactly thats what Im saying I swear ghanians andd other africans think the white man is god when they come to their countries!!, this isnt even news worthy!
You people must stop using the word obroni. Sometimes I laugh seeing the same people using it too. Obroni ( wicked person) was the name our Ancestors gave to them when the came assore our land 1822.
