Everything in the movie"Sicko" is absolutely correct. ALL medical needs are free at the point of use in the UK . You can see your doctor usually on the same day and ALL hospital treatment is free regardless of any national insurance payments you have made. I find it disturbing that the richest nation on earth can withold this right to health from its citizens. I am disgusted and horrified, shame on you!

@ammarios We can pay for dental too. Depends on where you go. I get it free because I'm over 60 also precriptions. I needed a "bridge" when i knocked a tooth out and my dentist wanted over $1000 /£500 later she said $2000. I got it free at a dentist half a mile away. Phewwww that was a hell of a lot of money!

@clearly and yes, I ALWAYS manage to get in to see my doctor (therapist, GP..whatever) either the same day, the next day..OR IF HE'S REALLLLLLY booked, the day after.. and who am I?? I am a broke struggling student.. yes, I have no money.. but I can STILL get to see my doctor like ANYONE would.. the system does not discriminate or care about stuff like that... thankfully... Canada may not be perfect, but in my opinion it is MILES ahead in many things by North American standards..

They are doctors but the system push them to survive instead making their job. That is why saving people life can't be a private device. Without profits medical research would have stopped at penicillin, an accidental discovery. Billions of dollars spent each year in medical research has lead to nearly every major discovery in medicine. Take away the motivation for research and life expectancy and quality of life diminishes. I know many Canadians, not many like the Canadian system and it definitely would not work in the U.S. My suggestion for the insurance problem: limit imports and put Americans to work.
Medical research could be funded by government money, instead of wasting it in moraly wrong wars. (Btw, have they found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq yet? Keep searching...)

@Hazard33 People complain about the NHS system in UK, saying long waiting lists and poor service. In my 25 years on this planet, I have broken both arms, one foot, dislocates a shoulder, broke a rib, nose 3 times, cheekbone and fingers and toes. Its not the most comfortable place, but its a hospital, I went in broken and came out fixed. I find the people who complain are the people who complain about everything. NHS is great along with the people who work for it. Americans would benefit from it

If you actually go to a country with socialized healthcare, you will get the real facts. I'm Canadian, i had a major surgery to my leg, and guess what? it was free, it was Finished in less than an hour, and i got to the hospital only an hour and a half before i had my surgery, not to mention that I also had to be x-rayed to see what i needed fixed. so don't criticize a system until you not only WENT there but have LIVED there!
Canada has a decent system, i know, but it's not without problems like michael shows. how fast can you see a doctor when you get sick in Canada? How easily can you reschedule an appointment? How much is your sales and income tax that pay for it? I lived in Italy, and also have and English friend and in both countries the socialized systems are so slow that many people wind up buying private insurance anyway. Full socialization is never the answer.
If you live in the most populated cities, then of course it will be slower. The speed of the hospitals depends on the amount of people in need of treatment. there was a study by the UK that said that the speed of the hospitals in Ontario is the same as the speed in the hospitals in the city of Boston. And In Vancouver BC, one of the most vibrant ports in the world, the nation's best children hospital, the BC's children hospital, was shown better than the average hospitals in America.
And if you say that socialized medicine is bad, ask any canadian (Either Liberal and Conservative), and they will say that they prefer the government run health care to the RICH RUN "health care". And as i said before, LIVE in the country before you criticize it!

That's not true (about me having no judgment of America other than by movies and T.V.) I'm part American, i have relatives in America right now, and i was born and raised there until i was 10 there. i go there every other year for vacation. I also know that as i have a VERY low form of autism (which only impairs my speech, not my brain) i would not have gotten medical treatment. (i was lucky never to get too sick.) So i am glad i have the Canadian "Socialized" program.

well depends on how you look at it, what good is the procedure if its too late, because resources are so limited. Im not saying our system is perfect, it should be made more accessible, but im not so quick to say that we should model it after france, canada, or the UK, because they have a load of their own problems. I was referring more to simple doctor visits like your general practitioner. I heard it can be quite difficult to find one and walk in clinics suffer in quality, personal attention, and promptness. The overall quality of hospitals is probably comparable, but when it comes to responsiveness, the US repeatedly rates #1 in the world, and rates from recovery from serious illnesses is also near the top.
Also the cutting edge research done in the US is costly. Employers generally pay for your insurance here, however, there is an unacceptable number of the unemployed, the self employed who don't have coverage Individual coverage is expensive. I think it should be regulated more strictly, but any socialized system tends to deteriorate and lose efficiency over time. Look at the US Postal Service, Amtrak, secretary of state.. They're not terrible, but not competitive either, just OK

And yet for only about $200 per year per anyone under 18 or over 65, and only $350 per year per adult. and when you consider how much Americans pay for health insurance, about $350 per year per adult is incredibly low. I am English but hav e spent many years in the US and I have been to Cuba.
Everything in the movie"Sicko" is absolutely correct. ALL medical needs are free at the point of use in the UK . You can see your doctor usually on the same day and ALL hospital treatment is free regardless of any national insurance payments you have made. I find it disturbing that the richest nation on earth can withold this right to health from its citizens. I am disgusted and horrified, shame on you!

@clearly lol yup... here's where we differ (and I envy you).. unfortunately, for some BIZZAR reason, Canada (only currently) does NOT cover dental.. the GOOD news however, is that the current healthcare fight in Canada is to get dental included too..and I feel this is the difference between us and the US.. here we're fighting FOR dental and for the people, whereas down there, for some reason, they are fighting AGAINST it..against their OWN good..so I'm pretty sure (.contd..)

I needed a "bridge" when i knocked a tooth out and my dentist wanted over $1000 /£500 later she said $2000. I got it free at a dentist half a mile away. Phewwww that was a hell of a lot of money!

I am a broke struggling student.. yes, I have no money.. but I can STILL get to see my doctor like ANYONE would.. the system does not discriminate or care about stuff like that... thankfully... Canada may not be perfect, but in my opinion it is MILES ahead in many things by North American standards..

Without profits medical research would have stopped at penicillin, an accidental discovery. Billions of dollars spent each year in medical research has lead to nearly every major discovery in medicine. Take away the motivation for research and life expectancy and quality of life diminishes. I know many Canadians, not many like the Canadian system and it definitely would not work in the U.S. My suggestion for the insurance problem: limit imports and put Americans to work.

In my 25 years on this planet, I have broken both arms, one foot, dislocates a shoulder, broke a rib, nose 3 times, cheekbone and fingers and toes. Its not the most comfortable place, but its a hospital, I went in broken and came out fixed. I find the people who complain are the people who complain about everything. I'm Canadian, i had a major surgery to my leg, and guess what? it was free, it was Finished in less than an hour, and i got to the hospital only an hour and a half before i had my surgery, not to mention that I also had to be x-rayed to see what i needed fixed. so don't criticize a system until you not only WENT there but have LIVED there!

Canada has a decent system, i know, but it's not without problems like michael shows. how fast can you see a doctor when you get sick in Canada? How easily can you reschedule an appointment? How much is your sales and income tax that pay for it? I lived in Italy, and also have and English friend and in both countries the socialized systems are so slow that many people wind up buying private insurance anyway. Full socialization is never the answer.

If you live in the most populated cities, then of course it will be slower. The speed of the hospitals depends on the amount of people in need of treatment. there was a study by the UK that said that the speed of the hospitals in Ontario is the same as the speed in the hospitals in the city of Boston. And In Vancouver BC, one of the most vibrant ports in the world, the nation's best children hospital, the BC's children hospital, was shown better than the average hospitals in America.

That's not true (about me having no judgment of America other than by movies and T.V.) I'm part American, i have relatives in America right now, and i was born and raised there until i was 10 there. i go there every other year for vacation. I also know that as i have a VERY low form of autism (which only impairs my speech, not my brain) i would not have gotten medical treatment. (i was lucky never to get too sick.) So i am glad i have the Canadian "Socialized" program.

well depends on how you look at it, what good is the procedure if its too late, because resources are so limited. Im not saying our system is perfect, it should be made more accessible, but im not so quick to say that we should model it after france, canada, or the UK, because they have a load of their own problems. And Michael portraying them as perfect, and unanimously accepted is a total blatant lie. There are constant debates about privatizing the socialized systems more.

I was referring more to simple doctor visits like your general practitioner. I heard it can be quite difficult to find one and walk in clinics suffer in quality, personal attention, and promptness. The overall quality of hospitals is probably comparable, but when it comes to responsiveness, the US repeatedly rates #1 in the world, and rates from recovery from serious illnesses is also near the top.

Also the cutting edge research done in the US is costly. Employers generally pay for your insurance here, however, there is an unacceptable number of the unemployed, the self employed who don't have coverage Individual coverage is expensive. I think it should be regulated more strictly, but any socialized system tends to deteriorate and lose efficiency over time. Look at the US Postal Service, Amtrak, secretary of state.. They're not terrible, but not competitive either, just OK

We do have a postal service here too you know. As well as libraries, and a government, and train stations. And yet for only about $200 per year per anyone under 18 or over 65, and only $350 per year per adult. and when you consider how much Americans pay for health insurance, about $350 per year per adult is incredibly low. THIS is why we like our system.

As for the post office, it works great to deliver your postcard and store coupons, but when you have an important document to send and you want guaranteed delivery, you go to your UPS or Fedex store. both private companies! Yea, on the other hand, it's ridiculous that it's breaking the bank of many families, and some people can't use it cause they can't afford it, while insurance companies are making huuuuuge profits. So Michael is a liar, cause he exaggerates everything like there's no tomorrow, but it's a good thing that he brings the issue into the spotlight, and makes people think about it. Private health insurance is a private tyranny that only exists in United States. It's a rather barbaric system that tells you you're health is only worth what you can afford.
People in United States should get behind, and support, HR 676. If you don't know what it is learn about it! GM & Ford are going bankrupt because of the rising cost of health care. If United States had single-payer system, the companies wouldn't have to worry about it.
