  • does Brom Bones remind anyone else a little bit of Gaston?

  • love both of these. this version of Sleepy Hollow is great, and the critic is right about Ichabod being a dick... i never noticed. That laugh is classic.

  • I liked the Wind in the Willows adaptation. But I'm not to fond of the Sleepy Hollow adaptation. When I think of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, I expect it to be dark and spooky all the way through. Not wacky and well.... cartoony.

And yes, I think the Headless Horseman in this is awesome!

  • Oh my god...the headless horseman still scares the crap out of me...and i was evenstupid enough to the watch Tim burton's sleepy hallow where he made the horseman even more scary!!!

  • The two shorts are really good but wouldn't it have been better to do Ichabod's story first then the wind in the willows?

  • The headless horseman scared the shit out of me when I was little I even hated that song when it came on.

  • anybody else notice the build up to the headless horseman chase scene was scarier then the headless horseman himself?

  • @slaymaster999 Yeah, the buildup is freaking awesome, stuff that the Critic didn't even mention. The animals' chirpings and croakings resemble warnings to Ichabod (i.e. the crickets sound like they're chirping "Ichabod," a frog's croaking sounds like "Headless Horseman," and the birds' squawking sounds like "Beware" and "Here he comes!"), and Crosby's narration, which had sounded so friendly and cheerful earlier, sounds genuinely frightened.

  • @Adamguy2003 crickets sounds like ichabod turn back or ichabod here he comes, frogs are saying headless horseman of course, the owl's say go go go, and the crows saying beware while the wind is pointing the opposite way, plus even crosby sounds like hes frightened by it the way he says man i'm getting out of here

  • This is just from what I can tell, but I think they put two stories together or into a several bits of a musical is cause they used them to fill the time they needed so as not to drag it out or they were out of ideas at the moment and grabbed things in between a a cartoon they wanted to lengthen or a movie idea that couldn't get off the shelf.

  • Anyone else think that Katrina von Tussle looks just like Cinderella here?

  • @prue6967 She does. I would not be sure prised if they recycled her character coloring and design for Cinderella years later.

  • I LOVE the Ichabod Crane story

  • I used to watch this so much as a kid, even though it scared the shit out of me :P

  • Okay thats just weird, talking about the library and how dark it is, with how you can't see the narrator, then say you loved it? Next you'll be telling how bad a movie is and then saying its awesome, and "I totally loved it, you should go."

  • And on the subject of the Tim Burton version, NC mentions how Sam Raimi lifted some of the atmosphere for his movies. Burton actually did take a lot of images from this cartoon for Sleepy Hollow. The bullfrog croaks "Headless Horseman!", the shot of Brom disguised as the horseman throwing the pumpkin is similar to the one in this, and during the final chase, Ichabod hits a tree and lands on the horseman's horse.

Check it out! it's kind of spooky! (No pun intended)

  • I thought at the end it showed Ichabod alive and married to another women?

  • @pkstarstorm1up It also said that he was probably spirited away by the headless horseman.

  • @pkstarstorm1up But if you listen to the narrator he says, it was a rumor concluding: "But of course the good Dutch settlers refused to believe such nonsense..." and so on.

I have to say I'm glad he didn't bring up the Tim Burton flick. I mean that was entertaining and all but it really strayed far from the story.

  • I didn't care about The Wind in the Willows. I only cared about Ichabod's story. I'm glad that I saw that version of that story first. It was scary enough for me. Shortly after this movie was re-released on video, Johnny Depp's Sleepy Hollow came out in theaters. I'm glad I didn't watch that movie until a couple of years, now that I'm old enough. As a kid, just this animation scared me. Watching the violence in Sleepy Hollow would have traumatized me as a kid.

  • This Disney two-fer may not be the most reverent literary adaptation, but it's remarkably crafted and emotionally resonant.

  • Brawn is a better choice for Katrina then Ichabod. I mean you can tell Brawn loves her and is good to her. Ichabod just wants her fathers money. Brawn is more of a romantic.

  • Great review! I still have my VHS tape of this one. I loved watching both as a kid, but Ichabod was my favorite.. I actually did pick up on Ichabod being a bit of a jerk in the movie; however I remember being scared as heck during the climax (as well as being extremely glad I wasn't Ichabod, lol). I was also creeped out by the library scenes, haha. Very underrated cartoon, if you ask me.

  • when i think of WitW i think of the cosgrove hall version

  • OK Ichabod was a moron but Katrina doesn't hold back either! She's a total slut she knows the guys pine for her and has them do almost everything for her heck she even let's two men fight over her because she thinks it's amusing!

  • For "Ichabod," I think the climax is one of the most atmospheric moments in animation history. The buildup to the Horseman's appearance is just incredible to me. It has such a subtle evil to it and creates such a creepy mood. I think it's pretty underrated.

  • @Guigley I completely, 100% agree.

  • I never watched the Mr Toad Segment, but I remember Sleepy Hollow really well. Wow, watching it again, looking back, and having never read the book, I never realized how much of an ass Ichabod was.

The Headless Horseman I remember. The chase scene was great, and seeing the freakouts of Ichabod and his horse are priceless.

  • I saw that movie last week and it was dark and amazing! But I do love the headless horseman's laugh!

  • Oh no Icabod is a douce in the original story too

  • i loved ichabod and mister toad SO MUCH!!! i love this movie

  • were there 2 different animated Wind in the Willows? I'm pretty sure I saw a different version

  • this movie is actually good

  • 3:03 where did the pumpkin head disappear to? It only comes back when the horseman throws it at Ichabod, but where was it till then?

  • @ConstantineChernabog In his chest?

  • @ConstantineChernabog You know all cartoon characters have the invisible pockets.

  • @ConstantineChernabog Maybe in his pocket.

  • @ConstantineChernabog Idk. It looked like he pulled it off of the horse or something at 3:04.

  • i love ichabod but how the hell can he laugh without a head

  • @beinghumangirl Because it's a cartoon.

  • Is it just me or are these sort of like templates for future disney characters? The guy at 0:25 looks a lot like the asylum manager or whoever that is from Beauty and the Beast, Brom KINDA looks like Gaston, and Katrina (is that her name?) looks like Cinderella. Especially 0:25, I find...

  • @Kelter82

Wow I thought the same thing growing up :o even now I do.

  • I didn't remember the part where Ichabod was a greedy bastard.

Oh well i think it is because it was the first time i saw a ending where the protagonists dies, and i was shocked.

  • I remember watching this in 4th grade and thinking Ichabod Crane was a mooch. Not to mention his cowardly and superstitious aspects.

  • In the original story Ichabod never really was the hero. The narrator describes him as pompous, superstitious, condescending, and greedy. Brom was in many ways the hero, constantly playing tricks (the horseman being the last) on the arrogant Ichabod

  • what asshole without a childhood decided to hit "dislike"!?

  • @ConstantineChernabog Ichabod?

  • @ConstantineChernabog A MAJOR ASSHOLE

  • @ConstantineChernabog a troll.

  • Btw, its Winkie not Weepie.

  • @Hyman74Roth Douchie will remind him on the next Top 11 F***-Ups!

  • @ConstantineChernabog I don't think that'll happen. Whenever Doug makes those lists, it's specifically regarding his Nostalgia Critic reviews. This is him being himself, so yeah.

  • Everything he said is exactly how I feel about this movie. One of my all-time favorite Disney films.
