  • there was a myth on 40 truck garett shay and a 14 truck shay built by alco in 1927 and

    1924.

  • @Strasburg1991 wow really a 14 truck shay!......you are clueless dudee...and you still kno nothing about cass!....you should come to railfan weekend with me next year...

  • @eltonjohnfan100 go to google and type in 14 truck shay. it should be in the name of berlinerwerke no joke i looked it up before. probably in 06 or 07.

  • yes I meant big 6. but no 5 won't be out until next year. The shop is short handed and is trying to just keep up with the regular maintence.

  • usally Big ^ aka Western Maryland #6 pushes us up on the whittaker run. But IT is down and we are using the shay 2. Shay 11 or Feather River #3 is used to push the bald knob along with the #4 as the pusher. Shay #5 will not be out of the shop until maybe next year if lucky.

  • I assume you mean that #6 will not be out until next year. Shay #5 should be out within the next month.

  • Guys....My Complements to the great State of West Virginia for funding the Cass wonder. This from a dweller in your sister state, Virginia. While some of the northern parts of our state are wearing Birkenstocks...us Roanokers are at the alter of coal fired steam butt kickers. The O' Winston Link Photo museum is located in our fair city of Roanoke. Home to the Norfolk and Western Shops. We're steamers too.

  • Yup # 5 is the antique... How'd you pick up the ID?? Someone aboard said She's No.11 but that the Shay that pushed us to Bald Knob...

  • Also, listen carefully at the end of the video.."she's built in 1926"...is that Shay #2???

  • I know those engines like the back of my hand LOL. I go to Cass a few times a month so I have gotten to the engines pretty well.

  • The passing Shay is #2. Which is a Pacific Coast Shay. Shay #5 is 102 years old.

  • Hello, mattyg yes Shay #2 is pulling the Whittaker train at the moment but the plan is that within the next few weeks Shay #5 will be on the Whittaker run along with #2.

  • At the end of the video, you can hear the announcer call the passing Shay as No. 5...I think...

  • Great video! I'm a big fan of CSRR, and it looks like they've done an "Extreme Makeover" on their cars-they used to be red and green w/o the yellow discs (it is also odd seeing Shay #2 on the Whittaker train after all those years as the Bald Knob road engine)! It looks like you rode in the new car for 2007, the "Leatherbark Creek"-did you happen to film any of the interior by chance? If you did and would be willing to share, I would like to see what it looks like and if its worth $4 extra!

  • No video on the interior but it's very comfortable and you are located right next to the Shay. Lots of people wore ear plugs which I don't get. The noise is wonderful. Steam popping coal smoke puffing and the whistle is great. The leatherbark is certainly worth the extra $4. You are three feet from the business end of the Shay.
