Methylmercury contamination caused by flooding of the La Grande reservoir is one reason for opposition by the Cree and local Inuit. Two of every three people in Chisasibi, a community of 2500 at the mouth of the La Grande river, had unacceptably high levels of mercury in their bodies; some elders had 20 times the level deemed acceptable, and some exhibited symptoms of mercury poisoning. According to the Cree, fish and wildlife populations have also been severely affected by La Grande Phase I.
Yes, I know. The natives hate their presence. When driving up the James Bay Road, stop at the rest-stop shortly after the Rupert River one (it's at a bridge too). And under the bridge you will see spray-painting of what the natives think of Hydro-Quebec. Talk to them too, and they will tell you. But you will enjoy the area, it is so beautiful. Remember to fuel your car before passing the check-point on the James Bay Road (next gas station over 350kms). And get maps from the Check-Point too.Enjoy
Good job. I'm going up there in the fall. Did you know Hyrdo Quebec is killing James Bay and it's ecosystem? These Hydro electric stations are causing high levels of methylmercury in the James Bay waters.
as of today, these two communities, Chisasibi and Wemindji, are without power since monday, can someone explain what is happening there?
