Actually, after watching another video, I realized it wasn't blinking, it was due to the shadow from the wall. So I changed my mind a bit about the situation. My theory is this was put in for beta-testing purposes, so they could test areas in Matilda, and they forgot to take it out. So it wouldn't really quality as a 'glitch', but more of a 'bug'. If they were to put this intentionally in the real game as an Easter Egg, I'd imagine they would've made it somewhat more realistic.
Considering it blinks, it probably falls in the glitch category. Easter eggs are usually intentionally placed there. What WPCBlaze suggests sounds the most plausible. There's lots of last minute changes like that in games. I hack Super Metroid, and noticed alot of unused enemies, unused doors, unused rooms, ect. But, if you use them, they're (mostly) fully coded. No telling what this game has hidden within it, I'd imagine plenty of unused characters and/or sprites.

On the other hand i have not gotten bright shield rune and done this glitch somehow my hero manage to use his bright shield rune to clear the mist

you should get humprey and futch and then train until your levels are like humprey and futch . make sure your low levels are alive if they die just reset it keep doing it and then go to highway village and equip humphrey with 2 fire emblems and buy 10 medicine now you can try and beat the harpy , good luck =] you see that your low levels will level up like crazy and that will make your game less frustating and less stressfull
carefull if ur playin the emulator ive encountered a bug and i cant get passed south town it freezes cause of character data (or crashes emulator like psxeven)
i always use this glitch when i wanna lvl up characters be4 doing withe deer inn quest, simply go through that gate, go to highway village, use bribe if u must, get humphrey and futch and lvl up a bit, then go to rakutei mt, and own harpy with 3 precious hungry friends !

The reason for this is simple, while the game was first being made, that was where you was suppose to go in the story, however in the middle of making the game they changed the story line which ment u didnt need to go through the gates intill much later, so instead of rewriting the code that makes the gates impossiable to go through(as this would need rewriting a lot of the coding) they just put a object in front of them, and thought who the hell is going to try and push the gates!!????

you should get humprey and futch and then train until your levels are like humprey and futch . make sure your low levels are alive if they die just reset it keep doing it and then go to highway village and equip humphrey with 2 fire emblems and buy 10 medicine now you can try and beat the harpy , good luck =] you see that your low levels will level up like crazy and that will make your game less frustating and less stressfull
