  • Why doesn't the tubular bell chime except only in some of the songs? Does it need special books to activate it; or perhaps only the older books that originally came with it will make it work? This is a very nice and unique organ...nice video!

  • @pixibobcat It chimes whenever the arranger thinks it is suitable for it to do so. It shouldn't be used all the time just because it is there.

  • Love "the wedding of the painted doll" - great!

  • A point of interest, there is a copie of this organ in Australia if its still playing. Also named 'de klok' in the early days this organ was from a Amsterdam organ landlord H. Möhlmann.

  • It's not a copy and it is still playing (just) from what I gather.

  • is this roll or cardboard book, and what brand of roll or book?

  • They're cardboard books (just like all old street organs in the Netherlands) as you can clearly see in the video. And what do you mean by brand? If you mean the arranger, that varies with every book.

  • Thijs: I'm not sure what the significance of "Style " numbers is either. It may be only a way of identifying the facade design as I note in

art Reblitz book The Golden Age of Automatic musical Instruments there are two 84 key Mortiers shown one identified as a Style 29 the other as a style 41 . The Style 41 in the Sanfillipo collection has a facade that apears identical to the Nethercutt . I jdut realized I went way over my alloted words and had to delete lots. Next Email more.

  • Hi Thijs; Thanks I was able to get to the video to listen again to De Klok. The arrangement of Tico Tico sounds like the same arrangement that I have heard on the 84 ket Mortier at the Nethercutt Museum here in southern Ca. They call it a "Style 41" and it has a very beautiful furniture facade. Regards Cecil

  • I never understood why organs always had to have model numbers in the U.S., rather than simply being told the number of keys it has (which is a much more useful piece of information anyway). The Wurlitzer band organ type numbers really do not seem to have a direct relation to the organ's size, e.g. higher numbers equal bigger organs. It just seems random to me. Who came up with the "Style 41" tidbit for the Mortier anyway, or was that something Mortier did themselves to keep the Americans happy?

  • The "De Klok" is beautiful and sounds beautiful Is it all Mortier original or has it been reconfigured? How many Keys is it? I ask as an owner of a 67 key Mortier Cafe Front organ and it doesn,t sound like De Klok. Cecil in L.A.

  • I believe it is a (mostly) original Mortier street organ with 54 keys, and its construction was called for by Carl Frei (who also did the original intonation of the pipes if I'm correct).

It's a good thing your Mortier Cafe organ doesn't sound anything like this, because it shouldn't, as it is an entirely different class of organ! Could you upload a few recordings of it to YouTube?

  • Thanks for your response,At the present time I do not have a way to record my Mortier but I'll work on it. I need to replace or recover the rubber transport rollers I have tried to communicate with Johhny Verbeek without luck Do you have any recommendations for another source? thanks again for response I love listening to DE Klok

  • that's a nice orgel ... and old ! :)

  • I noticed on that on Wedding Of The Painted Doll, that was a bell on it or tubular chime. Has De Klok a bell or a tubular chime fitted to it?

    Ben

  • Yes, it has a tubular bell. It was originally built with a tubular bell, and it was named after that (De Klok=The Bell). The tubular bell was removed at some point, and replaced with a ship's bell (presumably from the Titanic). During its recent restoration, it got its tubular bell back.
