  • I know a lot of these posts are old, but just happened upon this video, and I have to agree with Whoopincough1 100% politics have NO PLACE in the music industry, example... the rock group system of a down who are of Armenian descent, my take on it is if you think its so bad in this Country, the good old USA then tear your arse back to Armenia you stupid losers, cause your in this country making millions of dollars off of these young anti war kids in this country. LOSERS!!

  • bring the troops home now

  • Bloody fantastic!!!!!!

  • We need this today

  • those scruggs are great. and we need artists to stand up with the people to stop this war now, too.

I wonder if there's more footage of this performance ... probably on the 90 minute film? thanks for posting.

  • For historical purposes, can you please list the date this event took place in the video description?

  • @dbadagna - If my memory serves me, it was in 1971.

    David Hoffman - filmmaker

  • The year I was born! I have just discovered your films about traditional music and dance (after searching for Bascom Lamar Lunsford) and they are an absolute treasure. Thanks a million for sharing them here. I am sending links to friends interested in old-time music and dance now.

  • I wonder if the Vietcong saw this ? These kind of protests got more Americans killed & encouraged the Vietcong to fight harder ... Love Earl , & C. Daniels , but politics have no business being in the music industry ..

  • That would be exactly wrong...........It is precisely because of these types of political engagement that brought the war to an end and SAVED countless thousands of lives and brought down a CORRUPT NIXON regime. (see Watergate in your history books). The right wing can try revisionist history all it wants...but it does not work because there are too many of us that were there and too many that are educated!

  • Hey, Whoopin, if you'll recall, weren't the Vietcong in there own country fighting foreigners??? Despite the local politics, wouldn't all of us be doing the same thing, if (and when) it happened here? God, I hope so, or keep practicing your mandarin!!

  • Get you history straight hielandmania ... The Vietcong were N Vietnam , invading the South Vietnam .. Yes , the US were the foreigners they were fighting , but the US were trying to help S Vietnam not be taken over by the Communist North .

  • @WhoopinCough1 The NLF was a branch of the PAVN, but it was established by southern Vietnamese communists, and recruited soldiers mainly from southern Vietnam.

  • @WhoopinCough1

South Vietnam were puppets for the French and then puppets for the U.S.A. Vietnam fought foreign invasion for hundreds of years, and they won. Now you buy your Nike shoes made in Vietnam and you don't even care.

  • @hielandmania you should learn about communism and socialism from the history books not first hand, then it is too late

  • To clumsily paraphrase George Orwell, even the idea that art shouldn't make political statements is still a political statement.

  • Sorry, WhoopinCough1 .. you're plumb wrong, fella. Don't know where you're headspace is at, man .. but It's EXACTLY supremely-respected, famous, ultra-credible musicians with immense INTEGRITY - such as the irreplaceable, beloved Earl Scruggs - who are best-placed to spread the required message to the great masses of the 'common people' - about unjust wars & corrupt & blind, ignorant & obstinate dumb-arse politicians who aren't doing their country or its people good service or justice.

  • The reason I say this, is what if someone says something political ,that you do not agree with?Like Ted Nugent for example ,if you totally don't agree with him ,are you still going to view him the same? The answer is NO!

  • I learned from a wise old man , many years ago , when I asked him about his politics , he said "I do not discuss politics or religion among friends or relatives".The reason for this, are that they would have viewed him differently, and vice versa, if he let his opinions be known .That's why I say musicians have no business spreading political messages ,right or wrong. I listen to music and musicians to relax & enjoy,I don't really care to hear their "views" in the political arena.

  • @WhoopinCough1 Everybody has a right to speak their views, and if they are celebrities and people will listen, then more power to them! This great land of freedom is great because we have just that -- freedom. You do not have to listen to any message you don't like.

  • Earl, great musician and better person.
