As a child with my farther would play Kipling around the house. I remember singing Tommy this and Tommy that but never knowing what it was all about. I would mimick parts of the verse. I'm 37 now and discovered kipling again after searching through youtube and finding your video of Tommy. It has taken me by storm, you have inspired me to try my hand at Kipling.

as a former Marine, I can totally relate to this. Being a former "single man in barracks", I can tell you this poem is just as true today as it was when it was written.

Yes, Kipling was controversial for his time. People were shocked that in "Gunga Din" Kipling actually elevated a lower-caste Indian to being better than one of the Empire's soldiers.
Rudyard Kipling is probably the greatest Englishman in our history. Look what and who we have these days, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Jonathan Ross, Pete Doherty and a whole lot of others.
While I have enjoyed Kipling's stories and poetry, I think your claim of greatest Englishman does not do justice to other greats such as C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, J. R. R. Tollkien & G. K. Chesterton. I do not wish to disrespect Mr. Kipling, but your claim is debatable.
Being a war veteran, I can certainly attest to the truthfulness of "Tommy". It is very much how I was treated before and after going to war....Vietnam.
Perhaps not the "greatest Englishman" but certainly one of the most prolific English writers. Don't forget his children's prose: Rikki Tikki Tavi, the Jungle Book, etc. He was, also, a scholar and historian and forewarned of the liberal forces at work against the Empire. He felt his greatest poem of all was "Recessional".
I do not think that Kipling was much a fan of the British "Empire" as this poem is definitely critical of how the empire treated its troops. And truly other Kipling poem were critical of how the empire treated it's own people outside of England. Read "Fuzzy Wuzzy" or "Gunga Din" . In a sense, Kipling was a "liberal". Also consider the criticism of the "New Age" by C.S. Lewis in "That Hideous Strength. And his imagery of hell, being a large bureaucratic corporation in "Screwtape".
Kipling was a man of his time, something no of us can truly escape. He was a man of the Empire, seeing it first hand and writing at times of its glory and also seeing its faults.
I agree with you about "Fuzzy Wuzzy" but it amazing how many people quote that poem as an instance of his imperialist racism. They clearly have not read it.
Anyone in doubt as to Kipling's views in later life might read "Epitaphs of the War."
Another of my Victorian favorites is George MacDonald who IMHO was a major force in the fantasy literature of JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. I might be able to make the case for him influencing Lewis Carroll, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and L. Frank Bean (American author of "the Wizard of Oz". These men are the fathers of fantasy literature and in a sense, sceince fiction.
I remember listening to "At the Back of the North Wind" on the radio (or did we still call it 'wireless' then?) when I was 8 or 9 but I have never read any of the books. Thankyou for you comment. I shall give him a try.
Rudyard Kipling did serve his country, he fought in the British Army and later used his influence in the army to help his son get into the army as well. Jack Kipling was killed in action, however, and Rudyard regretted his decision for the rest of his life.
While Kipling was a staunch supporter of the Empire and the common soldier, he never in his life wore a uniform. Bad eyes and low school marks kept him out of the army.

@JustAudio2008 You Muppet , it's not about the English soldier fighting , it's about the way the English squaddie is percieved by the public , when threre's no wars , they are ridiculed , but when it kicks off , the same public cry heroes ....

@conradmilligan What do you mean? Are soldiers not treated well in the UK? It is 180 from the Vietnam days in the U.S. now. People go out of their way to thank service members where ever they can, in airports, at Starbucks, just any place.

Chickenhawk definition: One who beats the drums of war while avoiding service himself or worse yet, hiding in some safe guard unit that will never be deployed and skipping much of your commitment and starting two illegal and immoral wars where others die for your corporate profits.

It was certainly the case 40 years ago when I was serving. It's disgraceful, but not surprising, that those attitudes still exist. Generally the people that treat military that way have never had their asses hanging out where the ordinance is going off.

"hustling drunken soldiers when their going large a bit" hell go near any military base and there are entire enterprises dedicated to hustling us troops.

as a former Marine, I can totally relate to this. Being a former "single man in barracks", I can tell you this poem is just as true today as it was when it was written.

Very nice reading of one of my favorites! Kipling's poems are best read aloud in a true Cockney or other regional accent.
Yes, Kipling was controversial for his time. People were shocked that in "Gunga Din" Kipling actually elevated a lower-caste Indian to being better than one of the Empire's soldiers.

Rudyard Kipling is probably the greatest Englishman in our history. Look what and who we have these days, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Jonathan Ross, Pete Doherty and a whole lot of others.

While I have enjoyed Kipling's stories and poetry, I think your claim of greatest Englishman does not do justice to other greats such as C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, J. R. R. Tollkien & G. K. Chesterton. I do not wish to disrespect Mr. Kipling, but your claim is debatable.
Being a war veteran, I can certainly attest to the truthfulness of "Tommy". It is very much how I was treated before and after going to war....Vietnam.

Perhaps not the "greatest Englishman" but certainly one of the most prolific English writers. Don't forget his children's prose: Rikki Tikki Tavi, the Jungle Book, etc. He was, also, a scholar and historian and forewarned of the liberal forces at work against the Empire. He felt his greatest poem of all was "Recessional".

I do not think that Kipling was much a fan of the British "Empire" as this poem is definitely critical of how the empire treated its troops. And truly other Kipling poem were critical of how the empire treated it's own people outside of England. Read "Fuzzy Wuzzy" or "Gunga Din" . In a sense, Kipling was a "liberal". Also consider the criticism of the "New Age" by C.S. Lewis in "That Hideous Strength. And his imagery of hell, being a large bureaucratic corporation in "Screwtape".

Kipling was a man of his time, something no of us can truly escape. He was a man of the Empire, seeing it first hand and writing at times of its glory and also seeing its faults.
I agree with you about "Fuzzy Wuzzy" but it amazing how many people quote that poem as an instance of his imperialist racism. They clearly have not read it.
Anyone in doubt as to Kipling's views in later life might read "Epitaphs of the War."

Another of my Victorian favorites is George MacDonald who IMHO was a major force in the fantasy literature of JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. I might be able to make the case for him influencing Lewis Carroll, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and L. Frank Bean (American author of "the Wizard of Oz". These men are the fathers of fantasy literature and in a sense, sceince fiction.

I remember listening to "At the Back of the North Wind" on the radio (or did we still call it 'wireless' then?) when I was 8 or 9 but I have never read any of the books. Thankyou for you comment. I shall give him a try.

Rudyard Kipling did serve his country, he fought in the British Army and later used his influence in the army to help his son get into the army as well. Jack Kipling was killed in action, however, and Rudyard regretted his decision for the rest of his life.

While Kipling was a staunch supporter of the Empire and the common soldier, he never in his life wore a uniform. Bad eyes and low school marks kept him out of the army.

lifter1545, don't lump me in with other people. I think the world of the non-coms and enlisted men of our armed forces. Who cut the bonuses and pay of the army? It sure wasn't liberals there, no matter what people may say.
