  • how many miles for hour you usualy get on this trains?

  • Very nice loco and railway. I had a look into the Wikipedia about that line. Pretty interesting.

    Thumbs up! :)

  • Is that an outhouse? I'd be REALLY concerned and cautious about going in there... rattlesnakes, etc!

  • @mickparker0 The bell is to warn anyone of a moving or potentially moving object. I'm sure there's other reasons, but that's what I know.

  • I love the growl the traction motors made

  • has anyone else had a dream about "The Train of Harpers Ferry"? i just woke up and had a dream about it.

  • Cool!

  • That's one smoky engine...

  • had enough of my country, town, street...want to live there in the middle of nowhere england is crap!

  • enviormentalist would hate this locomotive

  • I worked there for about a week over the summer, me and some of the guys always thought the sound from the alco engines sounded like they were always saying "bucket of bolts, bucket of bolts, bucket of bolts" really fast over and over

  • Man, that's some desolate country - and that's coming from an Australian.

Typical ALCO smoke - loco looks almost coal-fired.

  • but its a tour for tourist?!

  • Nice ride.

  • Awesome!!

  • You don't want to break down out there..

  • very nice. remembered the good old diesel engine train travel days. today we travel on nothing but planes & cars.

  • Great - we used the Nevada Northern for our film you can find here called Railroad Race. Great railroad and museum!

  • Cool scenery!

  • 1:03 and what air hose? :) apparently PRO shunter.

  • MY LORDZ 0:14

  • For an Alco, that really is quite miniscule.

  • this is movie is the best. good. i like. i loved.

i have movies in the trains in de Brazil. see.

  • Looks like an excursion train. Dad used to work for ALCO in Schenectady, NY. Never been to Nevada - I'll have to go there someday.

  • YUP she's an ALCO alright look at her smoke! lol Love that WABCO E-2 to they don't make horns like that anymore!

  • That's why Alco diesels are "honorary steam locomotives"

  • yea but only alcos ;)

  • very well done, i first watched this vid... ohhh, probly a year and a half ago, and everytime i watch it. it's jus as good as that first time

  • that horn sounds like a boat horn

  • there's a very good reason for that! WABCO E-2 horns were occasonally used on boats

  • What kind of horn is that?

  • I believe the airhorn is a WABCO E2.

  • The best. Very goog. I like. Nice. Beautiful. Note 10. I have movies (vídeos) of the trains.

  • The best. Very goog. I like. Nice. Beautiful. Note 10. I have moives of the trains.

  • Is this what we call a 'Heritage' line in Britain? Looks pretty wild countryside!

  • must have been hot!!!!!

  • Geez those things are ugly as hell

  • Not very ecologic...

  • ALCOholic!

  • I like the sound of this big engines

  • The raw sound of the diesel engine, and the electro engine !

  • ok.. so why didn't i stop for the train ride or even go to the train museum on my way from arizona?? i went through ely about 7:45am on my way to elko.. i could have met you! anyways... i miss the warm sun of nevada and the old trains you can find there and i thank you for posting this vid

  • Nice video man. Congratulations!!!

  • Awesome video. awesome diesel locomotive.

  • what is that loco??

  • That is the only operational RS-2 Diesel in the USA.

  • Love them suck-squeeze-bang-blow Alcos. Nice footage . . . Reminds of the NSW Government Railways 40 Class (MLW products of the 50s). They were so good and reliable, they literally were thrashed to death on express passenger and freight runs all over the State!

  • I love those old Leslie Tyfon A-200's. I wish they were more common like the K-3La and the K-5La

  • this is cool i recommend Nevada Northern RS-2 Part 1-5 on youtube by atsfft103

  • We have 3 RS-23's and a S-13 on the GWWD here in Winnipeg

  • They still use those alcos where i live there alsome

  • Look at my swedish Diesel Train NOHAB T44 running over an old bridge built in 1894!

  • I love these old ALCO's - Who says you need a steam train for smoke?!?

  • where abouts in nevada is this

  • It is in East Ely, Nevada.

  • that's sooooooo cool!!!

  • Man, I love Alcos. I really miss the old Peabody Short Line that ran on the IL. side of St Louis, in the late 50's. The entire train was a pale yellow. Those RS2's were a real workhorse, bowing-out to the Geeps.

  • There is an ALCO from New York Central in Baldwin, KS running with a 16-cylinder 251, it produces almost 3000 horsepower, and that's without a turbo!

  • Thats sounds a bit high for non-turbo.

The turbo 16cylinder would have over 4000bhp if this were the case!

The turbo 251 has nearly 3000bhp or less I think.

  • This one is probably 1800hp, just like the RS-18's, they woulden't use the one from the C630's

  • Thats my point, someone said they know of an alco non turbo with 3000bhp!!

  • Very nice video!

I have to make a small correction, though. #105 is a 1949 built RS-2, not an RS-3 (but already equipped with the 1,600 hp version of the 12 cyinder 244 prime mover). I operated this engine in 2005 (locomotive rental program) and it was absolutely gorgeous!

If you ever have the chance to go to Ely you should definately do it, great stuff and great people out there!

  • Sorry, I just saw it is corretly named an RS-2... no idea what I was thinking. Just forgwet about that part of my message. Thanks!

  • Great Alco 244 sounds and the blat monotone horn. I used to ride Rock Island commuter trains out of Chicago behind their RS3 fleet and always enjoyed the sounds.

  • LOVE those Alcos!!

  • Wish I was there to enjoy

  • Love how you can hear it revving up at 1:17!! Excellent job!!

  • Never say die Alcos!, i love the sound of the 244!

  • American tracks are definately bigger, but I'm quite sure about engines.

  • Are american trains bigger than UK trains and do they run on bigger tracks?

  • The track gauge is the same - 4 feet 8 1/2 inches between the rails - but the ties and fasteners are different, and U.S. trains are 2 feet wider (10 ft 6 inches versus 8 ft 6 inches) and taller (up to 20 feet 2 inches for Double Stacks). Weight limit is heavier too - 286,000 pounds gross weight per car in U.S. To hold up this weight the rails themselves are sturdier too.

  • I never got 2 C this engine run during rail camp

  • i love that engine but i love the RS-3!

  • It's nice that they kept the original 244 engine in this unit.

  • I love that old ALCO. It's a neat unit that not too many people see, and it sounds cool too!

  • NICEEEEEEEE! Of video :)

  • Excellent work I love this video! I have watched it about 3-4 times. I hope to visit this railroad soon!

  • Love the look of RS 1,2,3. They r the perfect diesel shape, and sound sweet, like a mix of english electric and sulzer in a pot!!

Its hard to beleive how old this loco will be-50+?

from UK, to far to ever see 1 my self! bah!!

  • Smokey diesel!! is this a tourist line?

I love alco's. why so smokey? old fashioned/ worn injectors, overfueling, worn turbo? or just Alco?

  • Just Alco! I believe they call it turbo lag, but I've seen it in other Alcos as well, including newer ones.

  • When they uncouple, a brake pipe is pulled off, did he forget, or is this normal?

  • Yes, that's normal. But when coupling cars together, the brake hoses have to be connected manually.

  • Some alco engines r called 244,251 etc and some r 5xx,what does it mean? I know that on the 251 it means 1951-a date-what about the numbers beginning with 5? is it a cubic inch per cylinder?

  • Sorry, I haven't heard of any Alco engines in locomotives other than the 244 and 251. EMD had the 567 (cu in per cylinder) in all their engines up to the GP35, then it was the 645 starting with the GP40.

  • Yep, look on the web, confusing stuff, EMD also have a 701 now-with electronics etc.Unless it relates to the Alco,Baldwin, lima conglomerate before the war?

  • I just looked Alco made-531 12"boreX13" stroke first built or designed 1931. also there are 538 and 539,meaning 1938 and 39 respectively, just as the 244 means 1944. Baffling eh?

  • Thanks for the info. Amazing that diesel engines were built 76 years ago. Of course, that locomotive in the video was built over 50 years ago and it's still going strong!

  • Did u know: the first diesel electric was built in 1917? Ingersol Rand, 300bhp, driver sat next to the engine (motor!), open pushrods, 90 years ago! the first diesel engine was in the 1800's, it was called the rational heat engine!! they had air blast injection.

  • Did u know that ALCO made 2 stroke loop scavenge diesels? secondary intake ports were higher than the exhaust ports, and reed valve controlled so the opened after exhaust closed so it could be pressure charged more without losing most out of the exhaust,

it was a marine engine with a 4 foot stroke! I think

  • Just a typical Alco! They smoked like that even when they were new. : )
