  • Dang this is good stuff! Do you vizualize a picture of how you want him in your head or do you just draw ?

  • @Exterlite, Hi! I visualize the picture somewhat, but it the details are formed when I do the actual drawing. Thanks for the kind words!

  • Hey, you're really good!

  • wot type of pen are u using as when i draw my picture in pen it just seems to smudge or blobs of it comes out and ruins it so i tend to use only pencil then colour using watercolour or sommin..???

  • ur amazing buuuut u should add color to everything u do

  • Great drawing! :) But the song drove me crazyyy lol

  • Very Nice Drawing though you dont use ur index finger. Was it broken or is that just how you hold your pen?

  • @andrewcosgrove, That's just how I hold my pen. Thanks for the kind comment.

  • @MattHawes Ahh that's Cool,I dont think I could Ever Draw like that

  • awesome gl but the music is kind of annoying...sat through it though

  • i can write the way u hold the pen

    -- Matt

  • what type of sharpie pens do you use..i saw in one of your comments that you used sharpie so ya know lol? sick drawing

  • Hi! It depends on the drawing, but I usually use an ultra-fine point Sharpie for detailed work on camera, and a regular fine point for filling in larger black areas. When I am not drawing on camera, I usually use technical pens and brush pens, and just Sharpies to "spot" the blacks (which means to fill in the black areas). But, basically, I use whatever gets me the line I am looking for.

    Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • wow that was really impressive. im a massive fan of green lantern and you did an amazing job recreating him and in one shot too! haha nice work

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • that wasnt quicck at all

  • Quickness is relative, I suppose. Care to try a shot at doing it yourself on video?

    -- Matt

  • thats a great drawing but the music got annoying at like 2:00 so i just turned off the volume and watched the rest great work though

  • Thanks! Sorry about the music, but I try to avoid using any copyrighted music and most classic music is public domain.

    -- Matt

  • tite shyt homie, u got madd talent.

  • Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • This is my favorite video ever! Nice video!

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • are you ever afraid you ganna mess up?

  • Moreson when I draw on camera, and without any underdrawing, yes. If I do make a mistake when I draw, and it's not too major, I try to work it into the drawing somehow.

    Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • awesome video!

  • Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • Hi im big fan of your draws. Can you give my some tips what pencils do use and how to draw poses.

  • Thanks for the comment! For pencils, pretty much any decent brand will do. I just use regular #2 lead pencils which you can buy anywhere. For poses, the things to concentrate on are things like perspective and foreshortening, and anatomy. As for more specific information than that, I am not too good at explaining things.

    -- Matt

  • Hi i Love Drawing and i like the Green Lantern A lot he's my favorite super hero, so could you you teach me to draw him Plz :P

  • Thanks for the kind words. I'm realy not very good at explaining how to draw, though. It's easier for me to do it than to tell someone how I do it.

    -- Matt

  • i love this drawing do u look off somthing when u draw or just draw what u think it should look like anyway nicee pic

  • Thanks! I don't look at anything when I draw, unless I am not familiar with a character and I need reference. Most characters from DC and Marvel comics I am familiar with enough that I don't need reference.

    -- Matt

  • hi could u pls draw a superman

    thanks

  • Hi! I did draw a picture of Superman fighting The Hulk, which you can find on my videos. I will try to get around to drawing a solo Superman sometime in the future. Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • hi! pls draw Spawn.. tnx Matt!!^_^

  • Hi! I did do a Spawn drawing video. In the search, type "MattHawes" and "Spawn" and I think it should turn up in the results. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the kind words. I am not real familiar with anime characters, overall, but I may try my hand at some one day.

    -- Matt

  • could ya draw Doomsday or Darkseid??

  • Hi! I will add them to the list! Thanks! Happy holidays!

    -- Matt

  • do you can draw fantastyc 4 ?? or X-Man??

  • Hi! I will add them to the list for drawing videos. Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • That will be greate:D:>

  • When you apply the shadows, where does your light source usually originate? Do you assume a natural light source, or artificial, such as a lamp or other sort? I'm an artist myself, and I'm just collecting input for future references. Thanks.

  • Hi! It seems that I usually have the lighting coming from the upper left side, but really it just depends on the picture for me. I guess I would say that I assume a natural light source unless the figure is indoors. Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • Thank you for the quick answer. If it's okay, I have another. Did you watch a lot of cartoons in your younger days, and adapt your drawing style from that?

  • Hi again! I did watch a lot of cartoons as a child, but my main influences come from comic book artist such as Jack Kirby, John Buscema, John Byrne and George Perez.

    -- Matt

  • Thanks again. I feel I can get better at drawing now thanks to watching you.

  • That's great! Thanks again!

    -- Matt

  • man u could be a comic artist.

    simply FANTASTIC stuff!

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • awesome stuff, thanks for posting.

    Green Lantern's Light!

  • Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    -- Matt

  • wow

  • Thank you!

    -- Matt

  • awesome....man how do you do those shadows?

  • Hi! It's hard to explain, but basically when drawing shadows the artist needs to keep in mind where the light source is supposed to be. Thanks for watching.

    -- Matt

  • thanks dude keep up the good work!

  • his hair are really great, same for his muscles. Congratulations

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • good anatomy...

  • Thanks!

    -- Matt

    -- Matt

  • Thanks! Sorry the music wasn't to your liking, though.

    -- Matt

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

    -- Matt

  • i hold a penicl the same way but with my pointer down amazing drawling keep it up.

  • Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • Sorry, Accidentally spamed my own comment, Matt. watched & loved all ur drawings, man, and just wonderin' if you could sketch out Prime, Nemesis Prime, Scourge, or Black Convoy as a new VID, thanx.

  • Hi! Thanks for the kind words. I'll see if I can get to your suggestions for a future video. -- Matt

  • after watching all those vidoes, dude, i found that all of ur sketches are awesome, it'd be even more awesome putting a video o U drawing Optimus ,Scourge, or Black Convoy ;-)

  • nice drawing

so can you do iron spiderman for me?

oh yeah and believe it or not,I understand the angle of the hands and thae fingers and the whole green lantern because I do loads of different angles myself so in my opinion

    PERFECT green lantern!!!

  • Thanks! I'll try and get to your suggestion for a future video. Thanks! -- Matt

  • That left hand.... is it me or is it the hand? 0_o

    Great drawing anyway, though.

  • I'm not sure what you are seeing with the hand, but thanks for commenting. -- Matt

  • Well, it looks like it has three fingers and the thumb looks a bit off... But it could just be me, of coure...

  • He has all four fingers and a thumb. The thumb is drawn from a certain angle, with some foreshortening. It might be more obvious if the video quality was better. Thanks again! -- Matt

  • Besides his hands, this is pretty awesome. Oh and his crotch is too small, GL <3

  • Thanks for watching! -- Matt

  • Matt, I think you're a great artist, probably the best I've personally seen, you are the reason why I'm going to try and draw good. (Yet I'll never be as good as you)

  • I should have put this in before--

Matt, can you or someone else put a place on the Happy Show's website where you can print out your drawings? Thanks -Ryan Stermer

  • Thank you very much! I really appreciate your kind comments! -- Matt

  • Thats the best hand drawn picture of the Green Lantern I've ever seen besides the original comic versions, you are awesome.

  • Thank you very much! -- Matt

  • TRACED!! lol joking. the pic is really fantastic man.

p.s how long did it really take?

  • Thanks for the kind words! It took me about 25 minutes from pencils to finished inks. Many of my drawing videos are in real-time, and usually take me about ten minutes, but I do not sketch the figures out in pencil or ink in as much detail as I did on this piece. -- Matt

  • Very nicely done! I like how you did it in just pen, it really added a nice texture to it. The song got a little old though, haha.

  • I've been trying to mix it up with the music in later videos. Thanks for the kind words! -- Matt

  • Hey,Matt, why do you hold the pencil with the midle finger?(or something like that). I`ve seen all your othe videos and you always hold the pencil like that. If that make the draw look better, teel me. You`re great.keep like this!

  • Hi! It's just the way I've always held my pen. I don't know why I started like that, but I've never seen any reason to change it. Thanks! -- Matt

  • Very good. You rock.

  • Thank you very much! -- Matt

  • do you really draw that fast or is this sped up time?! if so, then yur awesome dude! i love GL

  • i think instead of drawing already made charcs u should start makin ur own line of super heros man id read and watch it u have talent man

  • Thank you! I will probably draw some of my own characters in later videos. -- Matt

  • i like john stewart better, hal jordans 2 preppy

  • amazing!

  • Thank you very much! -- Matt

  • has anyone else besides me noticed green lantern has an alter raced ego? im not sure if its in the Justice League of America/ or the Justice friends but one is white and the others black...random tidbit just though i'd share it with you.

  • Hi! They are two different Green Lanterns. The one I drew here is Hal Jordan. The character in the cartoon (and also from the comics) is John Stewart. Both are friends and appear in the comics currently. Thanks! -- Matt

  • There are thousands of Green lanterns actually, one for each planet, Earth however has 5, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rainer, John Stewart, and Killowog.

  • I was writing about the earth Green Lanterns. Technically, Killowog isn't really an Earth GL, though. -- Matt

  • It's nice to know someone knows the GLs as well as I do. BUT after the whole "Rebirth" shebang, Killowog was appointed to Earth as 2814.5. The other 4 being Hal, Guy, Kyle, and John.

  • By the way, I was so caught up in GL geekdom that I forgot to compliment you on a very awesome drawing. Your others are just as good, and you have alot of talent.

  • Thank you very much! -- Matt

  • hey matt could you do some drawings of the hulk itself and green goblin or the thing from fantastic four or somthing like that hank you.

  • Hi Logan! I will certainly add those to the list of characters I plan to draw in the near-future! Thanks! -- Matt

  • I ment the main ones like Al Jordan and John Stewart and the new one

  • I Think you should draw al the green lanterns and the green lantern logo behind them

  • All of them? EEK! There's thousands of 'em! ;-) Drawing a few of the most popular like you suggest would be fun! Thanks! -- Matt

  • you sohuld give lessons for inking. its the best inking i have ever seen

  • Thank you, Eric! I wish I could explain how to ink, but, aside from some pointers here and there, I really don't know how to explain how to do it. Happy holidays! -- Matt

  • could you do a segment on hands i sux at hands

  • Hi! When I get a chance, I'll try to do that. Hands are perhaps one of the hardest things to draw for many artists. Thanks! -- Matt

  • hay man what type of pen are you using i like it its better that sharpie for thin pencil sketches. good drawing as well

  • Hi Schecter! That's a Pilot precise grip pen that can be found at any office store. I use all sorts of pens. Some people will tell you to only use certain pens or brushes, but in art you use whatever gets the results that you want. If it looks good to you, and feels right, use whatever tool you like best. Thanks! -- Matt

  • Your drawing was excellent. But the Vivaldi loop got annoying fast... Anyway, I'm gonna go watch more of your videos now. :)

  • Thanks! As for the music: Yeah, I'm going to mix it up a bit in future videos instead of playing one song looped the whole video through. -- Matt

  • Wow! So like when you sell these online to your fans how much money do you get for them?Is it in the $20 range or higher??? I'd also like to know who influenced your drawing style? Very rad stuff man.

  • Thanks! I haven't done a lot of commissions (I don't get much time with the shop, my own comic, etc), but usually it starts at $30. My major influences are John Byrne and George Perez, but there are many other fine artists that inspired and inspire me. -- Matt

  • Alright... My comment wasnt allowed to be any longer so I will just have to post a second half here ;-)

-The Shades is always placed right, and i have now watched all your shows so let this comment work for all the heroes :-) ( except the X-men stick fight xD )

  • Thank you very much for the kind words, Kashade. I appreciate the compliments and that you have watched my videos. Please keep checking back, as I will be adding more soon. -- Matt

  • Again Impressed. I am impressed how you get all the proportions right and the anatomy is correct down to the slightest detail. - I can see you love drawing heroes and I bet thats because their anatomy is so marked and outstanding - Muscles ect. And I enjoy watching the video and see how you start and end. I most draw portraits closeup so normally I dont get the whole anatomy going which is a shame because when I see this I think: "God, I wish I could draw such realisme into my bodies."

  • That was cool, how long did it take to sketch, 50 min.?

    Your way better than inkerman.

  • Hi! It took me longer than it should have, frankly, due to filming conditions. About 25 minutes. Most of the "Quick Draw" segments take about 10 minutes in real time. Thanks for the kind words! -- Matt
