The commentary is a result of them trying to sell the activity as a sport during this era. It's not a sport. It's certainly athletic, but you have no control over what the other "teams," in this case, corps, do on the field...unlike real sports.
The guest commentator was Rob McConnell, legendary valve trombone player and jazz composer. He did at one time play with Maynard Ferguson. One interesting note, he was the composer of the chart Blue Devils used for their opener in 1982, T.O.. He wrote it in honor of his friend and Toronto jazz radio disc jockey Ted O'Reilly.
People people people...that is CERTAINLY not Maynard and it's not Chuck. It's some dude that I'm not sure who he was, but he had poofy hair. I think his name was Jim. Jim something. I recognize his voice. Maynard's voice was much higher pitched and he punctuated everything with "Yeeeeah"....and Chuck sounded stoned half the time. :-) That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
The analyst on this video is NOT Chuck Mangione. It is Maynard Feguson. Chuck Mangione was the analyst in 1983 along with Broadway choreographer Pat Burch. Just FYI.
This is Chuck Mangione and Steve Rondinaro talking over us playing (I marched in the second year of Sparticus). It is a crying shame that they did this... Although I got to meet Chuck Mangione on the field for the Finale. I was so so so impressed with the 3rd Sparticus!!!! Thank you Dan for bringing it back and making it the most perfect show ever put on a Drum Corps Field!!! And also thank you for the beer and brats parties!!!!

As I recall the "other" commentator with "Reliable" Rondo (Steve Rondinaro) is one of the original members of The Canadian Brass, perhaps the finest brass ensemble of all time. They were all former "1st" players in major Symphonies prior. It may be Fred Mills, who sadly died in car accident a while back.
bahaha. it's like John Madden of DCI. "the snares have a roll coming up that they missed in practice . . . AH they got it! I hears Marshall Freeman is going to be a free agent next year. He has been talking about signing with the Blue Devils."
Nope. I marched. I heard judges tapes all the time when I marched. This is no judge's tape. This was the actual PBS broadcast from 1982. Somebody decided to get cute and announce the performances.
Yak yak yak yak. Ummmmm....guys. Have you ever realized that this is a MUSICAL event? But instead, because you're yapping away during the freaking drum solo, we can't hear the MUSIC. See the irony in that?
Actually, you're wrong. This was the actual PBS broadcast in 1982. I remember coming home from Montreal, sitting down in my living room to watch the tape-delayed broadcast, and being really ticked off that the announcers were calling the thing as if it were a baseball game. People were so ticked off that they didn't use this format again.
That was the most ANNOYING thing EVER, we were always taught not to "talk during a show" and here they are destroying it.
