  • OH GAWD, OH JESUS CHRIST!

  • Summer is a cumen in is one of the oldest songs still around apparently... So I read...

  • @nickthelick It's actually THE oldest known song in the English language.

  • @Inzanepiratical Aha! Thanks! =O)

  • Hands down, the scariest and most disturbing film that I've ever seen in my life. Not for edge of your seat frights as there aren't any, but just for the shock value and the wierdness of the people of summerisle and the music accentuates that atmosphere perfectly.

  • I never really liked the movie until someone showed me the musical aspect of it. There's something that feels so fun and enlightening about Pagan and Wiccan folk music.

  • It's strange that a film that ultimately depicts Pagans in a negative light is such a hit with the pagan community. Not to take anything away from this classic of course.

  • @swordhunter12

one form of paganism. you do realise paganism isn't one religion don't you? you could say its depicting religion as a whole in a negative way...

  • @NormbrettaMod Sorry I forgot for a moment that Paganism actually refers to a variety of religions but in either case I was thinking along the lines of the British/European forms of Paganism (the kinds that Neo-Paganism tends to be based on).

  • @swordhunter12

well there is evidence that pagans within the british isles participated in these kinds of rituals. neo-pagans don't, therefore they're in a completely different category to those the film is based on. would you not call these kind of rituals negative?

  • Some days I wish this was my theme music and played wherever I was.

  • GET a GRIP!!!

Worse things happen in the world, as we all know at this time!

  • Sheesh, ManInCognito and RedSoxForObama have filled two sections of the comment box. And their comments aren't even about the video.

  • OH GOD!!!! OH JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!!!

  • 4:20

AH! I wasn't expecting to hear that.

  • My choir sang this to open a concert in a small English village last summer - it was awesome :)

  • The school I go to (quite famous) is heavily religious, very Christian. Anyway, we have an iPod radio, which blares out music as an alarm, and this is the alarm I set for May Day.

  • I heard a cuckoo outside my room this morning. Which is strange, because it's January.

  • Me again-i love the play this while walking through desolate countryside as the sun shines brightly :-)

  • I reckon they had to change the lyrics, partially because it would've been REALLY weird in a bad way to have the inhabitants of a remote Scottish island singing Middle English lyrics (which equally may or may not be understood by the audience).

  • Piggy barbecue!

  • An amazing film with music to match it perfectly.

  • I don't like how they've modernised the lyrics of the song, and completely changed the tune.

  • @spackhollogay they didn't change the lyrics...

  • @Atvishees Yes they have. The original is in Middle English.

  • @Atvishees They mixed up various translations.

  • this film is on TV all the time, I always watch it. It gets scarier every time.

  • The Salmon of Knowledge!!! I love the story.

  • This song (or round) pre-dates Christianity in England.

  • @ManlnCognito

No it doesn't. It was written in the 13th century. The rites of May Day do, however.

  • @RedSoxForObama how do you know

  • @ManlnCognito

    Which?

With either one the answer is quite obvious.

  • @RedSoxForObama What?

  • @ManlnCognito

'Sumer is icumen in' is dated from the 13th century, written most likely by William de Wycombe.

The customs of May Day have their origins in pagan Anglo-Saxon lore.

  • @RedSoxForObama shut up you homo

  • @ManlnCognito

Eh, eight-year-olds will be eight-year-olds, won't they? Bye bye little guy, did you ask your parents if you could go on the Internet?

  • @RedSoxForObama When dealing with ignorant know it all Yanks like you it is unfortunately occasionally necessary to drop down to your level.

Now go suck on a corn dog (whatever that is, sounds revolting)

  • @ManlnCognito

I was educated at Harrow School. I am not a 'yank'.

  • @RedSoxForObama But you are a cunt

  • @ManlnCognito

And you are a troll. Goodbye.

  • @RedSoxForObama eat shit and die you prick

  • @ManlnCognito

The English lower class is the most disgusting thing that humanity has yet concieved.

  • @RedSoxForObama So says the pathetically weak middleclass cretin who would cower my presence and beg me not to hurt him....lol

  • @ManlnCognito

Whatever your physical strength, I would wager anything that I am orders of magnitude more intelligent than you.

  • @RedSoxForObama Maybe, maybe not...Who cares?

You’d shit your pants if I said BOO

  • @ManlnCognito

Why should I care? Are you in prison or something?

  • @RedSoxForObama not any more no.

Where you bullied as kid by the “lower classes”..lol

  • @ManlnCognito

Ah. So you were in prison.

Why? 'Rebelling against the man'? You still 14?

Go rape the new guy, inmate.

  • @RedSoxForObama Robbing the weak like you.

Rape the new guy? No profit in that.

    You coward

  • @ManlnCognito

Eh, I'm guessing you're bluffing anyway. You're probably some greasy teenager with glasses on his laptop in his mum's basement.

If not, well, come and get me. I'm waiting. Otherwise all this shit you're talking is worthless.

  • Comment removed

  • @ManlnCognito go away you ten year old cunt troll

  • @goombamario1 make me

  • @RedSoxForObama shut the fuck up u know it all YANK/hill billy

  • @goombamario1

'Know it all hillbilly' seems a bit of a contradiction, what?

  • @RedSoxForObama its a bit point lass wat u and that twat were doing on this vid so watch the vid and shut up

  • "This traditional English round was used during the opening ceremony in Munich 1972. Children danced to the music around the track of the stadium."

Cool. Shame they wont do it in London. :)

  • i wish they would, they are more likely to have the call to prayer though

  • @EUBanana

That would be the single most awesome opening ceremony ever, as well as a great nod to our history.

  • sumer is a-cumen in is the oldest known English language song known to man.

  • @dvdcannibal

No, it is not. St. Godric's hymns are the oldest known English songs for which a musical setting has remained. Godric was born in 1065 and died in 1170, therefore his music was written in the 12th century. "Mirie it is" and "Sumer is Icumen in" both date from C. 1260. It is, however, the oldest known English round.

  • No matter what you do to me now, you can't change the fact, that I believe in the life eternal, as promised to us by our Lord Jesus Christ! I BELIEVE IN THE LIFE ETERNAL, AS PROMISED TO US BY OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST!

  • There is no physical evidence to support the assertions made in the bible.

  • I'll be your Lord Summerisle!

  • a heathen, concievably, but not, i hope, an unenlightened one

  • @countjulian

'And it is I who shall live again, and not your damned apples!'

    ....

    'Commence the sacrifice.'

  • the pagans shall prevail !!!!!!!!!

  • Khristos anesti! Khristos anesti ek nekron! khristos esti basilias!

  • Can't even begin to describe the scene when this song occurs. The realisation when he sees the Wicker Man and then when all the people start singing the cuckoo song, his deep religious beliefs just aren't enough.

  • Their deep religious beliefs aren't enough.

  • @wheyman1 Indeed. Moral negotiation does little to sway Pagan extremist nutjobs.

  • I bought the soundtrack just for this song, but it turns out it's only on a special edition... anyone got a link to an mp3 or something?

  • sumer is a-cumen in is my favorite piece from the movie : )

  • @summerislefan Mine too

  • This song is so good it's no wonder it's been passed down nearly a thousand years.

  • Summer is icumen in Loudly sing Cuckoo Grows the seed and blows the mead And springs the wood anew. Sing Cuckoo! Ewe bleats harshly after lamb Cows after calves make moo Bullock stamps and deer champs Now shrilly sing Cuckoo ... ... Cuckoo ... Cuckoo. Wild bird are you! Be never still Cuckoo!
  • Great soundtrack! of a great movie! thanks to posted!
