Hate to tell ya bud, but Dr. Reinhardt was NOT "salvationed" in this. LOL It appears that way, but from what I've heard, it's someone ELSE'S spirit or something, going through the halls of gold.
VINCENT is constantly spouting confuscious type sayings throughout the film. I didnt really care for the ending as a 7 yr old scifi fan. Loved the movie, special effects, music, and spattering of name actors...Perkins, Schell, Borgnine and what about robot voices...Roddy Mcdowell and Slim Pickens I think.
@OUmillenium No one I know liked the end, but the music and the visuals were not bad. Just kind of left people cold and a bit confused. Shortly after I first saw it, a friend came up to me and said, "I heard 'The Black Hole' was gay at the end!"
It pissed me off no end. If you're going to stuff a religious(looking) theme right at the end then the characters should have referenced religious issues a few times in the script.
And it never does say where the heck they popped out.
@pinz2022 Actually they did to a degree. Borgnine's character at the beginning says of the black hole "Right out of Dante's Inferno." Also Dr. Reinhardt and others infer that the black hole has spiritual connotations and may be a doorway to God.
I agree the ending still feels very jarring to the rest of the film.
In deed, an interesting hypothesis. I watched the movie first time when I was about 8 years old. Besides "2001 - A Space Odyssee" no other film had deeper and more mystic impressions for me. I love the confusing end - in early youth I had lots of wild theories about it.
that woman is so beautiful.

I never exactly called it a salvation, when all is said and done. It always looked like a damnation.
