  • What you could argue is that people don't have proper hip mobility and therefore wouldn't qualify themselves to perform these movements, that is why we offered some alternatives. Yet, I do encourage people to move towards these progressions as I don't know how we have functional training without teaching proper qualities of rotation.

  • There far less stress on the discs that you would think. These movements are performed with a hip hinge far more than they are spinal rotation. The opposing internal rotation of the hip allows for proper hip hinge on the same side. We would expect less rotation of the spine than we do during throwing, kicking, during sports like baseball, golf, mma, soccer, football, etc. Rotation is actually how we move more efficiently, the weight room almost never teaches how though.

  • Hey Josh, great videos, but I have a question/concern about movements like shoveling with the sandbag and lumbar vertebral discs. What are your views on this movement with the torsional stress it applies to the discs? In my line of work, the worst thing I've found for disc health is applying a load to the lumbar discs while bending and twisting at the same time. I do recognize though, that this movement is great for core musculature. Just wanting your view on this.....thanks!!
