  • His voice is so sexy...

  • Wait, their was a time much music played good music?

  • Pure genius, he originated "lol"

  • I know the chords well but, can anyone tab his arpeggios? my ear is not so good :<

  • ugliest kid at 4:06 and that goes for the rrest of the douches in the crowd

  • @DancingBear1991 hahahahahha

  • @DancingBear1991 hahahah yeah he looks like hes straight from The Hills Have Eyes.

  • this guys music has seen me through alot of shit, and I shunned dave after a break up, until I saw him in concert and we looked at each other and there was understanding that we were both here looking for something different, something only childhood dream's can make sense of. Dave, you are a very lucky man with years yet ahead of you for you to enjoy, and I thank you for your music, it is entwined with some of my fondest memories and your sound will always bring me back to that moment in time.x

  • This is probably the best song I have ever heard.

  • lol makes the pain pass by.

  • what's guitar?

  • Love this song...

    Whoa buzzcut Dave... LOL

  • love Dave!!!

  • But also in all fairness, dave ALWAYS says his songs are ment to be interprated as you wish, so that is my interpretation =]

  • It is a little half and half, definatly parts about specifically jesus, but its the story of jesus questioning if god is really there for him "red, blood, could dad be god?", "crosses crossed,,,forgive you why? you hung me out to dry" but the other part of the song is about an old love or relationship thats rocky. Dave is notorius for having multiple storylines in a song that clash and make it a really deep song. another intresting fact is dave is atheis but has lots of songs about god

  • i cant believe dave was on much music in canada this is a serious rare vid absolutely wonderful!

  • Comment removed

  • All I see in this audience is a bunch of d-bags who want to take advantage of some foolish heartfelt girl. None of these sausages are truly respecting what Dave is throwing at them.

  • This is still my favorite version of this song. Great video

  • AMO esta canción!

  • In the intro/main riff it kind of sounds like a zepplin song.

  • WoW........................

  • Everything about that takes my breath away.

  • Hey it's Adam Sandler!

  • @kumilati is Adam sandler actually there or are you saying that cause Dave looks like him with his short hair.

  • Nice video, keep it up. Watch for BRANDON JAROD new music, OCT. release. Awesome!

  • i love the respect that the audience gives dave

  • He puts such feeling into his music....It's like nobody else is in the room with him.

  • such a great song!

  • gives me the horn! haha love DMB

  • wooow... its ridiculous how automatic guitar is to him

  • @Cstrick91 its only 1st position chords, basically beginners chords, whats outstanding is the songwriting, exceptional and the singer/songwriter is becoming an endangered species. So go Dave

  • @PAULOcbi hahahah yeah i get you know...i was just starting guitar when i posted that. But its still crazy how he plays and sings so well at the same time. Its a pretty hard thing to do

  • spoon me

  • wats awesome is while tripping and eyes closed he nails all the chords, lol gotta love dave!!

  • Love this song

  • Dave's music gives off such an aura of wisdom

  • his falsetto here is perfect

  • This is just RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

    RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING!!!!!!! =D

  • I saw Dave Matthews on an episode of House. And he's a really good actor!

  • hello becky--truer words have never been spoken... I am in complete agreement. May I make a suggestion--if you love DMB as I do--give Coldplay a chance. You will not be dis-appointed. True artist's are few and far between. Thanks--Lisa

  • RARE........JUST LIKE DAVE! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • this makes me melt...............

  • amazing

  • i love dave!

  • So sweet!!! You know most musicians go on mtv and play there most recent single. Dave goes on mtv and plays whatever the hell he wants to.. I wonder how many people in that crowd heard Spoon for the first time that day

  • @DanielLaNoue dave plays whatever the hell he wants b/c every song he creates is a work of art, there is no such thing as a bad setlist from dave

  • @luvdahay420 - Agreed!

  • Ha, look at little Johnny 90's in his backwards white hat watching himself on the monitor. Completely oblivious to the amazing performance in front of him!

  • fuckin amazing voice. damnit i wish i had that talent....

  • his voice is so beautiful .. i love this song! this video turned out so well. thank you for sharing<3

  • his voice is so beautiful. this video turned out so goood. thank youu for sharing<3

  • I hope he plays this at the Toronto Show June 1st!!! Not likely but be a real treat if they do. I jsut noticed int his vdeo his hair is super short!!!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time! Just got this song on my phone you can get it if you want @ grabeverytone . com

  • Silly bros in the audience. They have NO idea how amazingly rare and GREAT a performance they are seeing. Sad :(

  • maybe i'm crazy, but laughing out loud makes it all alright

  • june 1st DAVE IN TORONTO!!

  • HELL ya... my first time seeing them too got Pit seats!!!! I kicked myself int eh ass last year for not going and he played on my birthday too but I could only find grass seats :(

  • Trust me, the lawn seats are a blast :)

  • this is truly music at its best.

  • Performing for a bunch of 16 year old dudes. I bet he was ecstatic.

  • And thus the name reveals itself ;-)

  • It's amazing to think that Dave once considered having someone else perform his music because he wasn't confident that people would like the music the made. He is so brilliant!

  • Love Dave! Brillian man. Beautiful music. This song probably encompassess everything people have written. It doesn't have to be strictly one or the other.

We all have demons we carry with us. Show them love & they shrink in size.

  • He's just a baby in this video!

  • incorrect

  • You are so wrong it's ridiculous.

A description of Christ from the moment he is pinned to the Cross, through his death, and his thoughts as to whether Mankind is worth the trouble to return to Earth, and save. The Could Dad be God line represents thoughts passing through Christs mind as he begins to ponder his own existence. The forgive you why line also touches on the human aspect of Christ, as he contemplates why exactly he should come back after 3 days.

  • its not about heroin...but dave did dabble in heroin

  • abbottgr - How do you know Dave dabbled in heroin? I think most Dave fans know he experimented with some drugs, and have no intentions of lowering his rating of incredibly awesome. But heroin is one of the bad boys of drugs. How are you so sure he used heroin that you would spread it as if it were FACT? Just wondering.

  • He has stated in interviews that he has at his worst times used heroin.

another proof is his song Rhyme & Reason, he sings about it

  • @musiclover1223 Listen to Rhyme & Reason - "take this needle from my vein" simple explaination

  • @beattiep23 Dave didn't use heroin. That song was written through the eyes of an addict. You have to listen to all the lyrics.

  • @Roose63 The song is about jesus: "Could Dad be God/ Crosses cross hung out like a wet rag/ Forgive you why

You hung me out to dry"

  • @dmb7060 we were talking about Rhyme & Reason, not Spoon. I know it was off-topic to the vid lol

  • @dmb7060 With respect, I don't read this song as necessarily about Jesus. It sounds like it's about lost love, perhaps a lover who betrayed him, crucified him, hung him out to dry, and/or death and loss in general. Plus, spoon in spoon, is a reference to the way people in love lay with each other. What's your take on it? Maybe I'm missing something. Either way, it's a very good and very depressing song!

  • @headstock48 with the amount of God/Jesus references Dave makes in his lyricsim 99% sure its Jesus related.

Beautiful song. shame he doesnt play this anymore

  • @an1bal Hm. Interesting. I like his songwriting style. Can be depressing but can be very uplifting, too. It does make sense that it's about Jesus, but why does he reference spoons?

  • @headstock48 might be because as he stirred his coffe he thought of her

  • Gives me chills everytime

  • @an1bal um he may not play it a ton but he played it in 2008. and jeff coffin was amazing with the outro. there are many other songs that havent been played for way longer

  • Amazing song thats underated love dave

  • This is the best i've ever heard spoon. Yeah everyone wore hats in the 90's. I was the cool thing for kids.

  • your cool

  • It seems like everyone has a hat on?

  • what kind of guitar is playing there??? it sounds so full

  • Looks like his old Lakewood M-32 with the Florentine cutaway. These were used for a short time before the Taylors started showing up.

Lakewood is a nice German made guitar.

  • @hawksla Taylor 914c 6-String Acoustic Guitar w/Venetian Cutaway

  • @nigassma damn it sounds large!!

  • @nigassma and it's not a taylor! look at the headstock..

  • @nigassma Wrong. That's a Lakewood.

  • dude this is sssooo powerful its crazy

  • Great song! Saw these guys live in Holland. can't wait ro see them again!

  • you are crazy

  • Your ineptitude at searching doesn't matter to anyone else here.

  • Neither does your stupid comment ^_^

    Cheers.

  • what the hell were you looking up with Dave Spoon?!

  • I feel so lucky to have seen this song live. So beautiful

  • haha im so jealous

  • ha eh maybe someday you'll get to see it! you never know..

  • i love this song

  • This is at Much Much in Toronto back in 1998... I was there.

  • where was this

  • ...what an odd little twitch at the end there, right after he finishes playing. It's like he doesn't know where to channel the intensity now that the strumming is done.

  • thats the alcoholism kicking in

  • ooooofff...I wasn't even going to log on tonight and I stumbled on that!!... fucking beautiful. That made my weekend

  • This version is amazing, one of my favorites! I will agree with the other post, I dont think those kids realize how lucky they really are. Dave is a genius, whos music is deep and thought provoking.

  • awesome

  • those people have no clue how extremely lucky they are...dave def. at his best!!!

  • Dave at his best. What a beautiful performance.

  • yea! very creative guitar riff,Dave stands out !

  • its not the same without the carter and leroi.

  • MERAVIGLIOSO!

  • People need to stop arguing online. It's lame.

Listen to the music/watch the video or don't. End of story.

oh and Dave is a genius. That is all.

  • does anyone else reckon dmb are destined to always play their old stuff? just wanted to get a few opinions on this...

  • what do u mean like at concerts? they will just play what they want i hope they play some of their old stuff cuz i like it a lot. hopefully ill like the stuff on their new cd a lot too

  • so do you go on every dave video and talk shit......pretty sad life

  • This is one of my fave DMB songs ever. It's heart and soul and this version is so intimate. True musicians write, not to please the masses, but to make them feel. That's Dave Matthews.

  • right...thats why he came out with everyday right? to make the people feel? 'case most people felt like taking a crap when they heard that cd. it was written by dave and a pop producer in order to appeal to the masses, as per the orders of RCA. no what you are talking about before you comment. ohh, wait, you are a hippie. thats what hippies do all the time: speak without thinking, all the while thinking that they are smart, when most people laugh at them behind their backs.

  • I'm so glad that you're a business ignorant person who, on top of that, doesn't truly understand what it means to make someone feel through a piece of music. Of course, when you are a major recording artist you will be required to do things for your contract. Just as with any other occupation, you are required to do things to keep your position. The thing is, Dave can do that while doing what makes him just effing good. He's an incredible writer.

  • Oh yeah, you also wanted to discuss intelligence. Maybe we could have a lesson about the proper use of commas and colons. Don't you have some hoes to smack or something, wannabe? Get a life.

  • You make ME laugh. You completely disregarded my argument and focused on my footnote. Cookie-cutter, huh? lol Silly gangster. I'm proud of you. Good job for completing those online "masters" courses. Give yourself a pat on the back for me. Stick to the conversation you initially posted about. Quit trying to make this an intellectual war, because you're clearly unarmed. This is about music. We'll talk that all day! Any other posts will be ignored. Thank you, have a nice Dave. Ahem, day.

  • Destroy with "yo" words right? Like the fact that Hoes and Broes rhymes together.. or Cocaine and slang train? Maybe the genius that "we can steal more things if our clothes are bigger". This isn't a rap battle and this is the only thing I'll post so don't bother responding. Just don't trash the fans music and go post on a video that has a "Phat Ghetto Ass"

.. maybe some Patrone, Gucci or Cadalicas?

  • could never get into this song...

  • I feel sorry for you.

  • @pelle209 what's that supposed to mean?

  • Comment removed

  • I know what you mean. I always felt the same way on the CD. But I think it's a lot better acoustic.

  • I prefer acoustic as well, the one with Tim Reynolds works better with the mellowness of it

  • Where did you see Spoon with Tim Reynolds? Would love to see that

  • Alpine 08, MSG 08 (no jam)

  • Audio off a mix a girl made me man, don't know if it's uploaded anywhere, sorry :(

  • This song' about breakup...it's got sadness and solace writ all over it..

    very soothing actually...

  • If you guys like dave matthews, oasis, or pearl jam, check out the riff I made in my profile. Thanks!

  • Liked it a lot man, thanks for sharing

  • awesome awesome songwriter

  • Fuckin' amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • 94? are you a dumb fuck lol its 98

  • i see he went with the buzz cut for this show

  • What chord is he hitting at 2:55?

  • It's just an Em but he's adding the G on the high e string. I don't know if this will get screwed up but it'd look like this as a tab:

    e-3-

    b-(3)-

    G-0-

    D-2-

    A-2-

    E-0-

  • This song is sort of a first person interpretation of what Jesus could have been thinking while on the cross.

  • really? god liked coffe...lol

  • Well, maybe you would think of something liek this over a morning coffee.

  • Actually, every interpretation I've seen of what this song means is the exact same as you. For the poster who responded with the comment about coffee, it doesn't need to quote scripture to mean something about Jesus. It could be a metaphor, have you ever thought that?

  • i didnt know they ever had great musicians at much music from what ive seen nowdaysy its usually just hedley, billy talent or nicleback or some other shitty bands.

  • i agree with you almost completely...but i happen to love billy talent

  • WOW THIS IS THE FIRST time i've ever heard this song. Amazing! Love it.

  • hahaha 3:50, has to think about the next verse. Almost loses, almost!!

  • like on storytellers but he actaully stoped the song and couldn't stop laughing

  • Missed that.. what happened?

  • I don't think Dave is comfortable talking about Roi, is all to recent. He looks most free and relaxed when he sings and plays guitar...It had been my therapy when I have lost someone. I can't wait to see them live again...just saw them in June of this year. No one else compares, bar none!

  • dave has already said they will continue, and the album is going comming out '09, I can't wait...he even said it doesn't matter how we get by without Roi, weather we get someone to fill full time or guest, or whatever, he said he just hopes Roi was lookin' down on them and likes what they do, or at least laughs at them.

  • This band will definitly continue Jeff Coffin is doing a great job picking up leroi's spot in this hard time. This band was meant to play and spread great music across the world. Although Roi will be greatly missed DMB will overcome this obstacle

  • nice song

  • aw man, wish i was there alpine 08

  • i disagree that they will stop. i dont think they want that title and i beleive that leroi would want them to go on. with out him

  • does anyone know if dave and alanis have ever done this song outside the studio?

  • nope

  • they've been touring all summer with Jeff Coffin in Roi's place and have been doing a fine job playing. Roi will be always be greatly missed but these guys live to play.

  • Such a beautiful version of this song - still waiting to hear it at a show! I can't really even express how jealous I am of all the people at the MSG show - Spoon with Ingrid Michaelson? NO FAIR

  • Alpine 2008 u missed it

  • wait....what?

    oh my word.

  • beautiful
