  • Hey I have a question, I'm new to customizing models and I just got some pastels and new paint brushes but what I wanted to ask you was what is the easiest color to start off with when you are doing pastels?

  • @horseluvers2011 I would personally start off with the lightest color you have, just as SaturnineStudios suggested! ^^

  • That is just beutiful

  • It's just beautiful !

  • thanks this was really helpfull!!

  • do you think this works on a horse that's already painted once or must the horse be white? and can you use varnish spray too for finishing the horse? i really love it!!! :D

  • @horselovertje001 I've never remodeled a horse, or even painted one out of a kit, but i do know you can use a repainted one. This channel has videos on it and you use a spray to make it white again

  • how much was the horse

  • Wow, very cool, but if horse put in the water, do colors go away?

  • @BreyerFan1000 Nope, as long as its sealed with a spray finish its fine.

  • But how would you make a white marking??

  • @eringailfarms When I'm done pastelling I just used white acrylic paint over the pastels for the markings.

  • Very nice ! Do I have to put the clear stuff after every layers ? (sorry for my bad english, im french :D)

  • where can i get this model horse where i can just paint it myself?

  • @samreed227 I have no idea, this is a Peter Stone a commissioner sent me. You may be able to find it on mh$p.

  • @samreed227 Ebay, you can find them unpainted like this on there :)

  • do you think i could do a palimino by doing like up to layer 6 or 7 would look like a realistic palimino?

  • Can you give me all the colors you need please??

  • Wow! Were did u learn to do that?

  • Do you paint on white markings with acrylics or do you jut leave that spot blank when pasteling?

  • @QuarterHorseCustoms u paint on the white markings

  • I used this for my breyers and they turned out great! Thanks a bunch! Check Me Out too!

  • wow you did a great job!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for uploading this!! i was so stuck on how to put highlights and shading on models - but now i know how :D

  • so THATS! how you make the horses coats look so smooth on breyers, instead of using acrylic paints.

  • pls do a custom for me

  • This is a great tutorial! Ive used this method of pasteling for chestnuts, bays, silver bays, etc.. it works great! This is the best pasteling tutorial I've been able to find and its really helped me with my customizing!

  • Can you please make one Of how to make paint a paint horse, thank you

  • Wow, layer 5 makes it look like a palamino!

  • i want theat cm you did

  • Thanks. Now I can go and paint my pink Hanavarian into a beautiful Bay.

  • please correct me if wrong so every 2 layers would you use the finish and clear spray on the horse?

  • @ArabianLover223 I use the sprays after every layer, or until the pastels don't seem to be sticking because there's already so much dust on it.

  • Thanks soo much! this helped MAJORLY with my first painting job!

youu really should work 4 breyer your AMAZING

  • wow u r really good!!

  • WOW UR REALLY GOOD!! u should go to the place where they make breyer horses and paint for them!! ur really good!!

  • @SaturineStudios, thank you sooooooooo much!!!! I will look into it.

  • if i could send you a horse and the reference pictures, would you mind painting a horse like that for me? it would be a present for a friend and i would like to do someting special for her. if so, how much would it cost for a classics size? if not, do you know of anyothers who are willing to paint like that for other people? please respond soon. i will be gone most of this week, so you will have some time to respond.

  • @1horseylover4 I do take commissions. Classics horses start at $50, complex colors and markings are a bit more. There's a link to my site on my profile with more information.

  • So this is a Breyer horse?

  • How often do you add the spray? I see you did it after the first two layers. Do you then also apply it after every 2 layers or does the color stick/blend well after the first spray only? Thanks, great tutorial!

  • wow that's really cool, of course if I tried it myself I would probably end up looking nothing like it's supposed to…lol

  • Thanks for breaking down the layering process. I've never really "gotten" the concept of layering before, but now it make sense.

  • @FilmerOfBobcats Do you apply highlights at the end? For example, many black horses have blue or blue/purple highlights. Palominos often have metallic gold highlights. Do they make pastels with irridescent or pearlescent properties?

  • OMG!! she turned out amazing!!

  • luv the model

  • Thank you, it's brilliant! I was wondering if you have made any tutorials for a black horse?

  • @Pandaheart911 I haven't but its mostly the same method just with grays, browns and blacks.

  • do you think pastels is better then just using acrylic paints?

    8)

  • @littleleaf35 I prefer them because they give me more control. Acrylic paint by brush is hard to do because the paint dries fast so there isn't much time to blend the paint. You can airbrush acrylics as well but I still find pastels easier.

  • @SaturnineStudios

    ok thanks!!

  • I AM BUYING AND SELLING COSTOM MODELS AND UR VIDEOS HAVE HELPED ME START PASTELING THANK U SOO MUCH AND IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO BUY OF SELL ANY MODELS PLEASE CONTACT ME ON MY YOU TUBE CHANNEL DARK FOREST STABLES THANKS

  • the 4th layer looked like a palomino

  • i love your model he is beautiful.

what if you dont have a white primed horse? do you spray one of the sprays on him if the model is already painted? say for instance, i will most likely custom one of my old classics, which are already painted what do i do?

  • @HorseRidinCowgirl If you buy white primer you can spray any horse and then paint it.

  • that. that is one of the most beautiful customs i've ever seen. well done!

  • Wow, it became really pretty at the end!! Nice work!

  • You seriously have talent that is beautiful it's a piece of artwork AMAZING!

  • holy crap, that last picture is STUNNING, your seriously talented :)

  • Beautiful! I am just getting into pasteling, and this is an awesome referance video for techniques on shading and general application. My breyer is going to (hopefully) be a rose grey. She is a Halla model from the '80's.

  • what is the chalk pastels called.[the brand]

and can u use oil pastels?

  • this works great!!!

  • Where did you get the pastels, and the crystal clear and matte fisinh?

  • @ruffianruleswolfrule if it helps, i got mine at michaels, you can also get them at hobby lobby i think :) just trying to help :)

  • how much did all the material come out to be??

  • @TheGeishaDancer I got mine at michaels and it came out to be around $45. i got acrylic paints, pastels, brushes, matte finish, and primer, i didn't get the chrystal clear, but not alot of people do and the modles come out the same :) you could use it at the end if you wanted to though, or gloss for a glossy coat, i personally don't like glossy coats though. hope this helped :)

  • When you use chalk pastels has it ever come out grainy? I've tried making this chestnut many times but each time towards the 3 or 4 layer the color doesn't look as solid as it did with the lighter colors. Can you think of anything I might be doing wrong? Is it the pastels? spray?

  • @Katz11301 u cud try but it's really hard. I suggest acrylic paint. If ur doing a overo it migth be good if after u put ur last coat of matte finish to do the markings then once again seal it with crystal clear and matte finish! XD hope that helps!

  • Do you wait 15 min for the Matte Finish?

  • do you have to use crystel?

  • ummm do you use oil pastels?

  • when you said cover the whole horse do you cover the main to?

  • @lyr2107 Sometimes, I usually paint it with acrylics afterward.

  • Really cool!! :)

  • Is It possible to pastel pinto markings on your custom

  • where did u get the model horse?

  • @bbeas40165 This one was sent to me by the commissioner. I'm not sure where they got it.

  • it looks like the American Saddlebred Mare from the Paddock Pal Peter Stone collection ;-)

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I'm gonna start doing these. But if i tell my friends i did them, they will say I am lieing. What poops huh.... GRR!

  • do u do commisonings? if you do can u maybe send me a message

  • Very interesting way of doing it and amazing that it actually works! Looks very relaxing. Very lovingly done.

  • WOW! That is really good, you inspired me to start pasteling. I am working on a dapple grey and will try some other colors too. Thanks! P.S. You are awesome.

  • That is really kewl!!

  • I went out to a craft store yesterday to get some customizing materials. Instead of buying the Krylon Matte Finish, I got the Krylon Low Odour Clear Matte. Does this kind still work? I'm worried I should've bought the other one that you are using. Will this kind still seal the pastel?

  • cool

hey, whats the difference between sorrel and flaxen chestnut or r they both the same?

  • What did you do with this mold after you were done?

  • What kind of primer do you use, like what brand?

I'm trying to start customizing and I need to know the mediums used to make them. If you could answere my questions that would be really apriciated! :)

  • I know you probably dont want to hear this but that is not a chestnut but is a sorrel>... that is two different things... sorrel is when the maine, tail and forlock are a lighter color than the rest of the coat........ not chestnut... commonly mistaken.. but the pastel thing is really cool! and looks great!

  • @ZorraPony88 I knew that. I chose to call it chestnut in the video since I am mostly showing how to do the body color in pastels which works for chestnuts and sorrels. And chestnut is a more popular search term.

  • @ZorraPony88

Notice how she said "Main BODY colour will be Chestnut."

Not the Mane and tail. -.-

  • @ZorraPony88 I am so glad that you called it a sorrel and not a palomino coloured horse. It drives me insane when people do that. She's amazing at painting horses isnt she.

  • @ZorraPony88 You probably don't want to hear this, but it's only sorrel in certain breed registries. Otherwise...it's still a chestnut. The Jockey Club, for example, does not register "sorrel" horses.

  • @ZorraPony88 -- depending on where you are in the country they call chestnuts either sorrel or chestnut, in the western world they call them sorrel and in the english word they call them chestnuts. A blond chestnut is like a Belgian and a liver chestnut is a dark cestnut.. it's all in the eye of the beholder really.

  • this is fantastic! :) I will definitely use this as a guide for my first custom :)

  • Wonderfully informative video. Great! Now I just may have to try my hand at pastels again!

  • wow! is that how big a normal peter stone horse is?

  • i use FIXATIF by krylon and DULLCOAT by testers, you can get both from hobby lobby, michaels crafts or online..

  • This is really well done!

(Both the video and the model)

    :)))

  • or u could stop at layer 5 and leave it a palomino! nice vid!

  • You make this look SO easy - but its SO not! lol :) Nice video!

  • can you do this by schleich too

  • wow realy helpful

it helped so well i dont paint with acrilic anymore because of brush strokes

    it helped alot

    jack

  • That horse is beautiful I will have to try this does the horse have to be white to do this???

  • do you use pastels on the mane, tail hooves and eyes? or do you switch to acrylics for that...I am just getting started and I love the pastels, but I am still learning the details....I love you vid by the way.

  • Please reply!

  • Do u need both matte finish and crystal clear? Or what? Cause I'm going to get pastels today and need to know what all I need. Thnx :)

  • I have a latex base clear coat, is that a problem? It is Krylon "Low Odor Clear Finish" in gloss. Can I use just the matte finnish?

  • @saturninestudios love this horse, i have videos showing how to custom pastel a dunn, learned from you, i think mine turned out awesome, so thank you for these videos!!!!

  • THXS THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH!

  • Out of all the videos that I have seen like this yours is the best :)

    Best Regards...

    Chloe (breyernleo) :)

  • this didnt work for me, i did the SAME EXACT thing you did and on the 10th layer, i could still see the primer,

  • i tried it and runied my horse

  • is it possible that if you spray to much/ little matte finish on to the breyer the pastels wont stick?

  • is that breyer?

  • @silvermiststables No, its a Peter Stone Pebbles Saddlebred.

  • @SaturnineStudios hi there i had a question so i have dry pastels but there very small squeirs. Anyways it always rubs off how do you keep it on? I love your horse and im trying to work with breyers :]

  • @kitcat807 Are you sealing the horse with any kind of spray? If not, the pastels just come right off.

  • @SaturnineStudios oh. i see lol thankyou :]

  • @SaturnineStudios she says that @ the beginning on the vid.

  • @kitcat807 i use krylon FIXATIF & testers DULL COAT for my sprays. you can find them at micheals crafts, hobby lobby or even online and they are pretty cheap..

  • @SaturnineStudios How is that no? She didnt say she knew exactly where she got it, she didnt know. Someone sent it to her, so how is she wrong? =.=''
