dude, no no no, the panels have to have intersecting stubs if you want it to have any strength , where the pieces meet, they should fit like square teeth, or like gears, you know like this |_| |_| |_| |_| they fit together like a puzzle. otherwise your box will breaks dude. you also will use no screws or nails that way, just use glue, the right kind of glue of course..
Thank you for your precious advices. We're very happy to have Peruvians to build cajons properly. As the title said we just try. The result, unexpectedly is good. It has a reasonably fine sound and it's strong enough to bear my weight! have a nice day, bro.
@Luckiesthusband Reads as if you are describing wood joint similar to a dove tail joint that's known as a box/finger/box joint. Easier, faster to do as the dove tail, but not as strong as the dove tail.. Thing is why you are busting this guy for the construction he chose to use, another could bust Peruvians for using the box joint instead of the dove tail. Anyway it's academic, butt joints with glue, nailed or screwed are plenty strong for this application.
from my understanding, tones are not just made of just one frequency so isn't it fair to say that a bigger hole would make the cajon sound sharper? by your definition this would mean that the higher frequencies would be amplified (or rather, unabsorbed by the wood that would have been there).
i have peanut brittle stuck in my teeth....

The Peruvians can do more than just make cajones, the Peruvian culture has a long and deep history that goes back, whey back.

what woods to make?

shouldn't you have cut the hole out after assembly?
(That is, assuming the hole controls the pitch.)
maybe if you're ambitious, carve out a pocket door that you can slip in and out to control the size of the hole in the back.
this seems like a really awesome project. mucho props for getting this far!

The size of the hole doesn't control the pitch... the overall size of the cajon does. The larger the cajon, the deeper the pitch.
The size of the hole controls how much sound is projected from within the box.

i meant tone. :)
