I admire Christian Bale's performance as Bruce Wayne for many reasons, but one of those reasons is at 1:33. That face. I swear it looks just like young Bruce. And paired with Michael Caine as Alfred, they make an incredible duo.
this honestly gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. this movie is sooooo fucking good. and the dark knight did not do the storyline justice in my opinion. and i really dont think that the dark knight rises will be that good either.
@stillies77 pshhhh. even just the fact that the killed off rachel in the dark knight (and the fact that katie holmes didnt play her), just made me lose like all hope in it. and also, the dark knight barely got into the whole mentality of being batman. like alfred gave a little monologue about it, but that was it. i mean maybe the dark knight rises will get into all that, but still, im just not optimistic about it at all haha
Michael Caine is the best! He's very british, a brilliant actor, he sang with the Muppets in one of the best Christmas movies ever made....and he is one badass of a butler! :D
@KrytenMark I can imagine that guy being a member of the fire brigade now and it's like on Gotham's newspaper "LOCAL FIREMAN KILLED AT WAYNE MANOR FIRE", oh the regret Alfred would feel..
my favorite part of this film is the one right after that, when Gordon says to the chief " send everybody" , and the chief says " we don't have anyone left to send!" and then Bruce jumps of the bridge with the tumbler
I just realized what Alfred said after Bruce said that his family's house was burning. Alfred said; " the Wayne legacy. It it more than bricks and mortar sir." awww Alfred I f***ing love you
BATMAN BEGINS IS THE FOUNDATION ITS TRUE "ITS NO DARK KNIGHT" BUT IT MADE US FORGET THE AWFUL BATMAN AND ROBIN MOVIE AND GAVE US A TRUE ORIGIN STORY WHICH SET THE STAGE FOR THE DARK KNIGHT...... AND THE DARK KNIGHT RISES ITS THE FINAL CURTAIN IT MAY NOT HAVE THE JOKER BUT IT WILL FINALLY GIVE THE LEGEND BATMAN A TRUE FINALE
All you people asking where the blood came from, Seriously??? A fuckin huge has log just fell on him!!! I'm pretty sure that'll cause most humans to bleed
i was always a little confused after alfred pulls away Bruce's jacket and says something. what does he say? and did bruce get stabbed by the sword or punctured by the log or something? i never fully understood that little part... suggestions are welcome
@dainagolden He says 'The Wayne legacy is more than bricks and mortar sir' meaning the house isn't just the legacy his family left behind, he is also. And I think you'd find if a huge log fell on you like that you'd bleed too I wouldn't be surprised if he broke a rib or two.
If Bane DOES break Batman's back in TDKR, there should be a shot of him falling off the building while we hear Alfred's voice over: "Why do we fall, sir?" and then cut to black.
@TheZacula i think bane is goin to hurt or kill alfred yo, bec in some of the new Dark Knight Rises pics it looks like Bane is in the new batcae and alfred is always in there with batman/bruce.
If you were to just see this scene alone, not knowing it was a Batman movie, this would still stand as an amazing emotional scene with great acting. This is what Nolan brings to the table. Good fucking movies. Period.
Michael Caine = Brilliant actor, amazing Alfred. He is a perfect balance between the humorous Alfred, the loving Alfred, and the wise Alfred.
Plus, he is the only Alfred I can recall that has ever kicked some serious ass the way he did when he knocked that guy out from behind and rescued Bruce from the burning Wayne Manor.
@BuildersBlockStudios He also gave Alfred an awesome backstory, too; I'm not sure if he says this in an interview or something, but he likes to say that he imagined Alfred as being a very tough, capable guy and far more than just a butler; he envisioned his Alfred as being a former British special forces trooper and recruited by the Waynes because they knew him personally and trusted him, and gave him a military-style accent to match. I guess that explains the ass-kicking part. ^_^
This film is no Dark Knight, But it's not meant to be, Batman Begins is a personal film, and it's all about Bruce, where as Dark Knight is about Gotham.
Man its been eleven months since you posted that comment and its still as true today as when it was posted. Great comment, the fact its acknowledged eleven months ahead, is a testament to that.
Of course not. It's all set up for The Dark Knight but it doesn't mean it's not good set up. In fact it's great set up because I thought about Batman Begins while I was watching The Dark Knight.
@yamisupersaiyan Did you not see the movie? although Batman is of course important to the story and he reclaims the movie again at the end, Nolan rightfully paid most of his attention to the Joker, it's his movie.
oh I've seen the movie dozens of times, apparently you all haven't. Who had the character development? Batman, who did we personally see in turmoil? Batman, Eckhart, and Gordon. I don't get where people come from when they say it was a movie of Joker. The guy HAD NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, had no past, had nothing but cool lines and people think hes the main thing. Don't get me wrong, his performance was excellence...but legit he was not the main focus of the film.
@yamisupersaiyan HAD NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!? he was the fucking villain! he was a crazy evil clown! every single thing that happens in the movie happens because of the Joker. He kills Rachel, he drives Dent insane, he pisses off Batman. He is the most memorable character in the movie by far and Ledger acted circles around Bale in the movie (i know Bale is a great actor, he just didn't have much to do). Nolan clearly loved the character and paid attention to him the most.
Explain to me the radical change in Joker from the beginning in TDK to the end? He has no development, but thats not a bad thing. The Joker is supposed to be a completely insane foe. You clearly don't get what character development means. Yes you're right he drives the whole movie, but he himself is 1D. Its interesting, but not so much after you look into it a bit. Listen the Joker is a character that has room for potential. Batman? there is only so much you can do with him
Batman is awesome...but face it he's pretty 1D himself. Bale was the best Batman their could be. The Joker has obvious potential because hes so spontaneous so this isn't Bales fault. With that said, he was memorable but fuck I didn't care about him at all. I enjoyed his lines and stuff....but seeing Batman, Gordon, Dent in pain hit me more. Listen there would be no Ledger in the film without Bale. The two acted off each other. Ledger clearly had the better ROLE for acting is all
@yamisupersaiyan I cared about him, i didn't want him to die when Batman threw him off the roof, and i got really sad (and still do) in his last scene when he says "I think you and i are destined to do this forever" because i knew that we would never see this great character/performance again. In my opinion he's also the greatest villain in movie history. He doesn't need any development, what is he gonna do? turn good? reveal his actual past? it's better if the character is just a crazy mystery.
This scene really reminds me of the "Frollo's Obsessive Search" scene from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Especially given each scenes' villains' rationalizations for burning buildings down...
I mean he does everything in the movie, he gives Batman support and telling him his the man so he gets motivation to kick some ass, he also makes him breakfast, lunch, dinner, now that's a really cool dude!
michael caine really got alfred. the humor "what's the point in all those push ups if you can't even lift a blood log!?" and the love "why do we fall sir? so we can learn to pick ourselves up" were both perfect
@CrazyLazyMonkey Don't forget Bale's perfect teary eyed reaction when he ses "you still haven't given up on me"! But I agree that Caine is BRILLIANT in this movie!
the way alfred bursts into the fire shows how he deeply loves bruce...and how strong is the connection between the two and alfred's words are simple but with great meanings though...one of the main reasons why these series are way better than the old series... it shows the connection between bruce and alfred..not some cheesy line like in the old series...CAN I PERSAUDE YOU TO TAKE A SANDWITCH WITH YOU SIR??........gimme a break.
This movie was fucking amazing.....I am not being a hater against the Dark Knight, but I will say that I think the pacing of this movie was about 3x better than the Dark Knight. The Dark Knight had its moments (especially when Ledger was on-screen) but this movie was more emotionally moving than The Dark Knight could have possibly hoped for.
Sucks that Katie Holmes didn't return, that really put a DENT in the emotional tug of losing the character we grew to know from this movie.
I absolutely love this scene. There is easily a noticable chemistry between Caine and Bale. This is a very passionate scene with alot of heart. Everyone needs that one person in their life who will never give up on them. As much as I love the action in this movie, there are very relatable moments that any human can relate to in their everyday lives. This scene is a prime example. Michael Caine is great as Alfred. Thanks for posting this scene.

I love his snappy one-liners. Alfred has to be one of my favorite movie characters of all time, both in this portrayal and previous.

Alfred is the shit!
I mean he does everything in the movie, he gives Batman support and telling him his the man so he gets motivation to kick some ass, he also makes him breakfast, lunch, dinner, now that's a really cool dude!

this is one of the most emotional scenes in the movie.

michael caine really got alfred. the humor "what's the point in all those push ups if you can't even lift a blood log!?" and the love "why do we fall sir? so we can learn to pick ourselves up" were both perfect

@CrazyLazyMonkey Don't forget Bale's perfect teary eyed reaction when he ses "you still haven't given up on me"! But I agree that Caine is BRILLIANT in this movie!

Does anyone know which song on the soundtrack is playing as Alfred takes Bruce to the lift? I can't for the life of me work it out.
cheers,
:)

It's part of the credits. It's redone for The Dark Knight on the track "Agent of Chaos".

the way alfred bursts into the fire shows how he deeply loves bruce...and how strong is the connection between the two and alfred's words are simple but with great meanings though...one of the main reasons why these series are way better than the old series... it shows the connection between bruce and alfred..not some cheesy line like in the old series...CAN I PERSAUDE YOU TO TAKE A SANDWITCH WITH YOU SIR??........gimme a break.
