  • I love DREAMGIRLS, had the honor of playing Effie and I tell you J. Holiday is one tough act to follow. Let me know what you think of my performances on my channel.

  • OMG.. I remember this commercial. I saw Dreamgirls on Broadway and to this day it is my favorite play of all time!!

  • OOoooooooppppppps comment was placed on wrong thread :-( Let me find them chicks the comment was intended for.

  • Not bad at all... however the act could've stood a LOT more choreograpics...

  • Why don't they make commercials this good for musicals anymore? This one was a little before my time but I remember watching it on a BETA video tape my bro had of various Broadway show clips. I'd rewind it and rewind it and watch it again and again. They were so exciting!

  • Obviously they have the entre filmed and in excellent quality...they really should release it...in fact they should have released it in 2006 to promote the film or in 2007 after its release when interest was VERY high...i really would have sold then

  • this ad looks more like a movie trailer than even the movie trailer did lol

  • TOTALLY AGREE and thats just the way the original show was. It was groundbreaking in its use of cinematic scene and costume changes. So mad that I was born in the 80s and didnt grow up in them!

  • thanks for posting!!

  • Thank you for posting this! I am flashing back!

  • ok ok tell me something....the movie was good the stage play was amazing it won so many tony awards and grammys right? so who ever owns the rights to this wonderful peice of history just put it out and stop making it rot in so closet somewhere please.

  • THEY HAVE BOOTLEGS OUT

  • look at jennifer she own that stage so did loretta and sheryl i would have loved to se this in person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • will they ever put the original on dvd?

  • Sheryl, Loretta & Jennifer (Holiday) are and will always be the Dreams. The way they moved and sung made us fall in love with them. After the Dreams took the stage we completely forgot about superstar James Thunder Early. This is not the case in the movie. "Thunder" stole the show. After him, the movie version of the "Dreams" were boring. Beyonce and Jennifer (Hudson) were wooden and the girls didn't move sexy. The movie is a dude! Bring back the true Dreams named Sheryl, Loretta & Jennifer!

  • Too bad they never put out a video of the full Originial Broadwas cast show. Looks like the scenes in this commercial were from a longer filming.

  • They did make a longer version that showed in New York City movie theaters back in the early 1980s. This shorter one was for television. I have seen the longer one posted on youtube.

  • Thanks. Though realizing the owners might never release it I'd rather NOT know there was a recording for movie theaters back in the 80's.

It was such a HUGE hit on broadway that there must be professionally recorded audio tapings and filmings of the live OBC shows.

If so there in private vaults and only the creators of the show or the Geffen and associated producers have copies. The rich and powerful only give the public snipits so they want more and never will get it.

  • the only pro-shot of the OBC is at the New York City public library, but you can not check it out, the only way you can view it is to get written premission from the estate of Michael Bennett (which im sure they rarely grant unless for specific reason) only then you can screen there!

  • I would save money to go to NYC and view it. Forget seeing a Broadway show (I would love to but if i had the money to view this footage, it totally would skip out on seeing anything live....lol).

  • where on here ? i need to c it plz

  • i have the whole OBC video and Tour video, there are some vids in my channel! Check it out

  • Trivia: the original Lorrell in the Broadway version (in this clip, the tall one who is mostly on Deena's left) is Loretta Devine who sings I MISS YOU OLD FRIEND at the club in the movie (after Jimmy dies).

  • I love this video, but does anyone know where to find it for download? Thanks for putting it up, by the way. I never saw it on broadway, and it looks snappier than the movie, although that was excellent also. But if anyone knows were to find it, that would be great.

  • there is a program to download video from youtube to your pc.

  • i wish i was around when it was on broadway,it seems so much better then film version(not that the film version wasnt good, just the broafway version looks better)have they done any broadway productions of dreamgirls in london?

  • Seeing this commercial brings back memeories... I mean I was 4 or 5 when this clip was broadcast and we used to sing this at school.. thanks for posting. This lets you know the movie version had much to fall in line with as well as bring to life. This shows me I aint no spring chicken no more lol

  • The broadway version seemed to have alot more sparkle and glamour than the movie

  • It did. Act 2 opens with their Vegas Revue 5 years after Effie was kicked out (that is where the red dresses in the video come from). "One Night Only" had much more glamourous costumes. There is also another Dreams concert later in ACT 2 when Effie confronts Curtis. The girls wear silver gowns and only sing a few lines of "I'm Somebody", but it too adds to the glamour of the second act.

  • i heard they were goin to revive the broadway play sumtime

  • They were in 2006 but i guest it never happened. it was rumored that the revival would not have the 15 mins of cuts that were done to act2 in 1983. And it was going to cost 11 million dollars to do

  • yes, lord, yes!!!

  • damn i wish i could watch this one they should release it on dvd

  • hello

  • Man I wish I'd been around to see this show live! I love their version of "One Night Only" - much nicer than the new one.

  • HOw bout i jokingly got angry at my mother for birthing after the show...I want to see it so bad!

  • Me too do you know if that exist

  • Beyonce (or however you spell it) is like an ant compared to Sheryl Lee Ralph AND Jennifer Hudson.

  • dude u iz rele f-up if u can even compare to some skanky ass has been sheryl to the 1 and only priceless Beyonce!!

  • Or not? I'm breaking my law of not comparing for once to comment on how Sheryl Lee Ralph's tone was much softer and fit into the time period better than Beyonce's (although Mrs. Knowles does a great job)

  • thank you, beyonce sings those songs to RnB

  • Before YOU criticize ANYONE else you need to write, and I can assume speak,in english not in ebonics, fool!

  • Yeah, as much as I love Beyonce, her vice was way too good to fit the part of Deena Jones, however, Sheryl's was completely perfect!

  • OMG..I have been searching for this commercial ever since I realized There was gonna be a movie coming out about it....this commercial made me want to be glam....I was in the 2nd grade..lol.

  • i say the movie today it was AWSOME!

  • Those were the days...

  • I love this Spot. A M A Z I N G !

  • Yes I believe it Linnyspartan she did fabulous and would you believe she's the only ORIGINAL Dreamgirl in the movie she has her own lil part and I think she did great

  • GREAT POSTING. Is there a copy of the FULL VERSION commercial anywhere... its like 2.5 minutes long and has vocals from the cast members... J.H. "Curtis I've always done lead...I WON'T DO IT!"

  • I can't believe this is posted here. When I was 16 years old I saw Dreamgirls on my first trip to NYC. BLew me away. I have the original Playbill with autographs from the whole cast including Michael Bennett (hmm, I wonder if it is worth anything today?:)

  • I'll pay you $200 for it!

  • Hell yeah its worth something, put it on ebay i bet ud get a thousand or more dollars

  • Michael Bennett (the director) was a dancer on Hullabaloo, one of the teen 60's shows that the Supremes performed on alot. I bet he used alot of his own personal backstage knowledge on them which im sure made this play so successful.

  • GREAT posting! I remember seeing this commercial when I was a kid and wanting to see this musical badly, even though I knew nothing about it.

  • All I can say is that the upcoming movie has some big shoes to fill and i hope they can do it!

  • Would you believe that Loretta Devine was in the cast.

  • I know. Though she's gained a little weight, she's still awesome! She's a terrific actress as well, but her voice is awesome!

  • AWESOME!!

  • OMG...thank you for posting this !!!

  • I certainly wish I could have seen this on Broadway but I was only a few months old when it closed its doors in 1985. I was like 4 months old

  • this was was filling to my soul!

  • FABU!!! :D

  • now that's the way a commercial is supposed to look.

  • I remember when Dreamgirls came to Atlanta it was the same commercial. Dam I don't know how I remembered it cause I was only 7 but it must have left a mark on my mind.

  • cool

  • Thank you for posting this!!!! The color is amazing!!! Wow, the commerical is just as dazzling to watch as the show. Once again, thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  • THAT WAS WONDERFULL AND IN COLOR WOW
