  • Why did they have only 3 Amfleet cars and 1 baggage car?

  • cool p42dc

  • Nice. Now the Boston section has a sleeper again which is nice.

  • shore train...im used to seeing the long Lake Shore Limited's

  • The reason why some LSL trains have baggage cars and some don't is because it depends on whether they have one availible at Southhampton Yard.

The Boston part of the Lake Shore is a through train again as of some time this year.

  • So the Boston and NYC sections will not be hooking together at Albany-Rensellaer??

  • They used to do that. The Boston side would terminate at Albany and the passengers would get on the NYC section and continue to Chicago.

Now, they revived the through train. Boston section leaves with 2 P42DCs, a baggage car or two, 3 coaches and a cafe. Then when it gets to Albany, They cut off the P32AC-DM and certain cars off of the NYC section then couple the rest to the Boston section and then goes to Chicago. Same procedure on th way back. That way, no one has to change trains

  • I think that 20 years ago the same two F40PH engines went the whole route between Boston and Chicago.

  • Do you by any chance know why some LSL trains have baggage cars and at other times they dont? It seems the only way to get out of Boston with checked baggages is with the Lake Shore Limited.

  • No idea. You would have to ask Amtrak.

  • I take the LSL at least twice a year (roundtrip) from Toledo and have done so since spring 2003. Until about two years ago, the Boston section was disconnected/connected at Albany, now it's a physically separate train. It also used to have its own sleeper, but that's gone as well. The on-time arrival is hit-or-miss. I've also had it late by some 12 hours, but when I took it about a month ago, it was right on time.

  • Two trains with the same name? It's been quite awhile since I used the LSL.

  • Wow the only time I have seen an amtrak engine like that in MA was in the south station yard. Could it be that they are the same engine?

  • Could be. The Lake Shore Limited runs out of South Station.

  • The first time I took that train, going west, about 30 years ago, I remember that we got somewhere west of Albany and had to back up for miles to get down onto another line because the tracks for the mainline had been ripped up for the steel. Apparently some overzealous big shot had prematurely decided that the route from Boston to Chicago was all done. The line got rebuilt later.

  • I had alot of interesting experiences on that train years ago. One time we were about 12 hours late getting into Boston. Three different things happened to slow progress. There was a big snow storm. Then a barge hit a bridge that we needed to cross. Had to back up 14 miles and get on another track. And I can't remember the 3rd thing.

  • What you are seeing is only the Boston section of the train. This train meets and hooks up with the New York section out in Albany for the trip west to Chicago. West of Albany it is a fairly large train. At least it was the last time I took it. That was about 15 years ago. The Boston section was down to one car at one point years ago. This train follows basically the same route as the old and famous 20th Century Limited.

  • So the passengers going from Boston to Chicago dont have to get out the train at New York?

  • That is the way it was in 1992 the last time I took this train. At that time the section from NYC met the section from Boston at Albany/Rensellaer and hooked up as one train for rest of trip to Chicago. The sleeper cars, as I remember it, were on the NYC section. If you were riding in a coach seat you stayed right in that seat all the way from Boston to Chicago. But, things may have changed.
