I see almost 3000 people have now signed an online petition calling on the Prime Minister to "Conduct a 12 week public consultation regarding whether or not to make sex and relationship education a statutory requirement for children five years old and over, expressing regret that this did not take place before the decision was announced by Jim Knight on October 23rd"
Go to the Department for Children, Schools and Families website (DCSF gov uk) and search for "Review of sex and relationship education (SRE) in schools"
Hi. What I was trying to say is that it is simplistic. The statistics may be accurate but there is no proof of a causal relationship between separation or indeed sexual activity outwith a relationship and these outcomes. One could argue that they are a result of poverty, inequality or a predisposition to a mental health problem. There is some evidence to show that many childtrens health improves once parents in problematic relationships do separate. It may be beneficial to all concerned.
It seems to me that the video is using the following logic: 1) extra-marital affairs can lead to separation. 2) Separation is bad for children. 3) Therefore - if you have an extra-marital affair, you are increasing the chances of harming your children. I can't find a fault with this logic.
I think in a Western society we tend to forget how we are all inter-related and how our actions affect others - we are very individualistic. This is a good reminder that what we do matters to others.
This seems like a fair analysis. There must be plenty of couples who break up for reasons other than an affair. But equally there are many for whom it is a factor. I think the point is that we seem to have this 'ring fenced' view of sex, whereas in actual fact it deeply affects other people. We just don't want to admit it.
Jeremy, as I said in my response to your email, a brief video is necessarily simplistic and we appreciate the complexity of the overall picture. However, although we would never suggest that every separation occurs due to an affair, infidelity is a major contributor to relationship breakdown and often has devastating effects on families. If by highlighting the far wider consequences of so-called 'private' behaviour some of these separations might be avoided, surely that's a good thing?
This encourages discrimination ,stigma and judgementalism. Sent this message to producers:
"I am a long-standing recipient of the Cambridge Papers. I e-mail to communicate my sadness and sense of stigma resulting from having watched the clip. I am a separated parent. with 3 children. I love them. They spend half their time with me and half their time with their mother. I loved their mother and our separation had absolutely nothing to do with sex.
I don't think the video is saying that all separations are caused by affairs. And I don't think it's encouraging judgementalism. It's just listing some facts. Are the facts wrong? If they are right, is it wrong to conclude that affairs are a bad idea for kids?
I'm sure you care deeply about your kids. Don't you think all fathers who are separated, or all men having affairs, should be aware of these facts so they can work to make sure their kids aren't part of those statistics?
this is retarded. My parents have separated and I'm not living in poverty.
Get this propaganda out of my internet.

Good to see the government wants to add relationships education to sex ed requirements.

Possibly, except it depends what they mean by relationships and how prescriptive they'll want schools to enforce their "equality" agenda...

I wonder if they will push commitment - where can I read details?
