  • I want this video on my S663 phone.

  • how does this descend in to ghetto-rap?

  • This video is a favorite on Washington D.C.

  • Whenever I hear about ethnic strife...I know who started it...white bastards

  • If you ever met a woman like Emma McCune, how can you not fall in love with her.

  • No black face in the audience....LOL...where is p diddy or oprah?

  • @simbakafiri They're busy enforcing misogyny and deceiving people respectively.

  • meanwhile Lil wayne and drake just won grammies....what a twisted world

  • HolyJesus .

  • I love this man, all the pain and suffering he went through.... and still has so much faith in humanity. He is such an inspiration to me, to see him do nothing but move forward every step of the way, to get up from the ground every time he falls, and reflecting his experiences and stories through music to raise awareness. He is truly extra-ordinary, and he is a better person than anyone I have ever met... I hope people's eyes would open up as much as mine did when I saw his documentary...

  • i love the way he moves to his music! <3

  • he came to my school i went on stage he went crazy it was asome it was all over the school i gave him a hug and a high five

  • Parabéns Emmanuel Jal, que Deus te abençoe e proteja sua vida, sua missão e voc|ê possa ser usado poderosamnete para levar o amor e a paz por onde quer que você passe. God Bless You!!!!

  • The 20 people who dislike this video should not get cake on their birthday. (Sure I can think something more violent but Emmanuel Jal will surely frown upon such thoughts so I won't.)

  • A group of friends and I are arranging a 24 hour game of five a side to raise money for War Child, a charity which helps people in Emmanuel's situation. Please have a look at the page and donate x

  • He stopped at my school today because he is on tour. IT WAS SO GREAT TO MEAT HIM :D TRULY INSPIRATIONAL

  • This guy was a complete dissapointment when he came for a talk at my University in the US. 80% of his speech was complete bullshit and lies. Jal, get your priorities right!

  • @jobokello You are a fucking despicable pig, you have a disease in your heart and a blind-fold on your eyes.

  • @Xshado2 May you stop hating and the unbelievable may be upon you....

  • @coberjet hating? this guy was calling Emmanuels speech bullshit...

  • @armortail my tears started almost immediately!

  • 8:05-8:06 YOU'RE HOT! jk jk

  • ATTENTIONN!!ATTENTION!!!

    >,>WHAT AM I SAYING STOP WASTING STORYS AND TIME AND GIVING COMPLIMENTS START DOING SOMETHING BY U SELF IT AINT HARD AND U HELP SOMEONE ELSE AND UR SOUL THAT U HAVE HELPED SOMEONE IN UR LIFE AND NOT ONLY SUDAN THE OTHER POOR COUNTREYS TOO<.<

  • they do help because every populair singer/rapper has to give 10% to a diffrent poor country but they should give more thats right but every little bit is enough stop complaining about lilwayne and give ur own money because if everyone had to complain about populair's or rich human who dont care than nobody would give the africans any money or food or objects and thats what Emmanual wants the attention of the whole world for something else than them self.

    + i give like €50 a month

  • they do help because every populair singer/rapper has to give 10% to a diffrent poor country but they should give more thats right but every little bit is enough stop complaining about lilwayne and give ur own money because if everyone had to complain about populair's or rich human who dont care than nobody would give the africans any money or food or objects and thats what Emmanual wants the attention of the whole world for something else than them self.

  • Change.. it all about change.. Appreciation.. It's all about appreciation.. Difference.. It all about the difference that people can make it your life.. Teach The Dream.

  • THE 99% OF THE PEOPLE HERE, JUST WISH HAVE HIS ACCENT

  • soooooo awkward

  • very moving...tho i gotta say the end with this jumpy young hip-hippy african guy performing to white old geeks was hilarious

  • @dudewithalaptop You think HE cares about who's in the audience? I don't think so!

  • @CinnAlla no and he shudnt i just gotta say it made for some weird entertainment

  • right now tears are dropping dow ma face nd i am spechless.....i always believe what dont kill u makes u strong...nd thats what i am see!!!

  • I have recently become a huge fan of Jal.

While the performance at the end of the video was by no means the same quality as the post production version of "Emma" on the Warchild album, let's agree to give concession for a sound system set up for spealing, and not the sort of full-lunged, from the belly, enthusiastic stageplay Emmanuel puts forth.

  • Wow!! very powerful and sad story.

  • ASHE!

  • I think that the thing that strikes me more than anything else about this man is how authentic he is in his delivery of a message that he truly believes in. It is clear that he has suffered more than most of us in the Western world can really comprehend, and it is even more clear to me that he really is grateful for the work that Emma McCune did to save him and children like him. The joy that he expresses in his music is real; that isn't something that can be said often about music today.

  • Through all the struggle of humanity problems its people like Emmanuel Jal in this world who inspire other and make people see the only people who can defeat you is youself and anything is possible as long as you can dream.....KEEP IT UP EMMANUEL JAL YOU GIVE HOPE TO ALL WHO CAN'T SEE IT YET IN THEMSELVES YET THANK YOU

  • I red his book, what a life....

    Keep going Jal.....

  • THIS MADE ME CRY LIKE A BABY i am really SO SORRY for all that you had to go through.......and from a MUSLIM ...I LOVE U ..and i hope the BEST for you

  • I READ HIS BOOK!! oh my god i know this sounds corny, but i have never been so moved by someone! when he performed, he would give all his earned money to CASSY (an organization he started to support other Lost Boys of Sudan). It disgusts me how us Americans can go to a restaurant and eat one meal that would sustain those children for days. WE NEED TO HELP!

  • Blown away at this story and the message can be embedded in what we do on a daily basis. Tom copublisher Healthy Referral Newspaper

  • audience consists of liberal guilt

  • How?

  • Saw Emmanuel at Hillsong London. Awesome!

  • This man can really make you feel, as he tells the truth from his heart. His music is not amaizing, but the power it has is incredible. RIP Emma and massive respect to Emmanuel Jal. Keep up the work.

  • Absolutely amazing!. I have read his book, 'War Child'... phenomenal story. He has a message for the world form where he has come from... he has seen the dark side of the soul and yet had the strength to come back from it. GUA AFRICA, his organization... great difference in the world that he has made it from the war of Sudan... Alive & successful in the end.

  • Very touching song

  • this guy came to my school and talked to us just to let u kno emma is dead , she died in a car crash !!! :[

  • I found out about this man from the AfroSpear.

  • Dr. John Garang spirit lives in Jar.

Jar is one the 'lost boys of Sudan' who saw a hell of a war at young age.

  • this song is very touhcing =[ i am glad for emmaunal and emma, emma good job for saving emmanual's life. (:

  • My favourite music is not hip-hop, but the speech is deeply moving, and I respect him for everything he did, and his determination in trying to change his world. Why, why, why wouldn't we think about aid to Africa the way he thinks. And why shouldn't we try things that hasn't been tried yet?

  • Its our world, hes doing all one man can but we all need to help the change. Its still pretty crazy over there, best thing to do is educate yourself (not by main media) and go form there.

  • Inspiring

  • More ppl like Aged choir Boy and PaPyKoG in the world...

  • yes. we need more people like him in the world.

  • wow

    amazing

  • what an inspiring talk. thanks for the wisdom and intelligence, emmanuel jal. i hope your message is spread wide and far.

  • push on brother!!! theres still good out there

  • g e n i u s

  • Mr. Jal's talk was excellent; not only did he have a great deal to say about policy and his experience, but he integrated it in an organic way that is easy for anyone to understand. You may agree or disagree with some of the man's interpretations, but he certainly has a right to say his piece, which he did wonderfully. Both songs were great, and the one at the end was deeply moving.

  • it is very touchable speech and video I liked the song and i hope hip hop return back to the root when it was talking about communities' needs not about you'all know what they talk about now just for the record not all of them though.

    peace!

  • i love when the truth is told ,

  • very powerful talk. Although, the song at the end was pretty cringe-worthy. That's his culture and way he expresses himself though so more power to him.

  • You are the one who should feel embarrassed by your comments. Crawl out of your cave and join humanity.

  • So articulate in a language which is not his first!

  • The Sudanese.

  • eeeeeeeeeeh. Wrong answer. There are no nation states by natural law. Everything else must be a construction, read Kant on the subject. We all should be caring about every other planetarian.

  • this talk reminds me of the book "a long way gone" by Ishmael Beah... excellent book. anyone knows it?

  • This sounds more like slam poetry than music, but the two are closely related.

The uniqueness of this guy is that he's not exaggerating, while many other slam poets speak out against things they've never seen. For them it's about being 'hard' or 'cool' or 'bad' or 'tough'. For him, it's about grief and pain.

  • Yes l agree with you and like the way you put it....

  • bless up you and sudan people .

  • I don't really like his singing, but his culture and the poorness of his people break my heart. Look at people like Lindsday Lohan and look at the family of this guy.

  • I thought this guy said he was going to perform something musical?

  • I skipped ahead until he sang and then I gave it one star.

  • as a disclaimer, and not to be a total ass, I am glad to see that Emmanuel Jal had the opportunity to tell this story in front of so many influential people who make decisions, and also to honor the woman who saved his life.

  • His story is very heavy, but his music is still SHIT.

  • Why is it always white people are going to help the blacks in Africa when basketball players get 8 figure incomes, and instead of of helping 1 million starving people they just choose to buy a 2nd and 3rd mansion, buy more bling bling pimped out sports cars and sleep with porn stars? Think about it. Blacks could help blacks but rarely ever do. They forget very quickly about them.

This guy was extremely bizarre but I appreciate his attitude to want to make a difference.

  • it pisses me off too when I see retards like lil wayne and whatnot taking so much pride in how much disposable money they have. however, that's a huge generalization of blacks. they make about 40% less than whites and are only 13% of the population. how many black people do you think were in the audience? still though, it's pretty embarrassing when you've got these rappers/athletes parading around their $410,000 chains and 24-karat golden grills while their brothers are starving

  • My point exactly. They all bruthas until one makes it big. Then it's see ya!

  • Hip-hop people should take after this man's example. But, instead they choose to use their fame to sing wrongfully about money, sex, women, murder, and possessions.

Imagine how things would turn around, if they all pointed their talents to something more positive that changes the world. Especially moving people to make a change in the poor violent inner cities, they arose out of.

There is a reason so many people stereotype and despise "hip hop". When it is just musical poetry, used wrongly.

  • If you don't know him alreayd, you're going to love the work of Saul Williams, Emmanuel is very much alike him.

  • The stars shine brightest when it is the darkest.

But if your not in its space all you see is its refraction.

Don't fall in the trap of categorizing people, you'll find yourself categorized and immobile.

Containment is a businessman's tool not a philosophers.

I suggest you talk on what you know i.e. what effects you directly.

  • @absorbinglight Check out Jal's song "50 Cent".

    Nuff said.

  • so true

very bad when it comes to donating things like blood, bone marrow, organs from donor cards etc too

the percentage that help is almost non existent, can be bad news for people with health problems+ rare blood types etc

still,we all have our faults i guess

  • @OceanWushi , so all black men are brothers? you put to much emphasis on race when you should be thinking about species.

  • it's great to see the difference we can all make in other peoples life ...with love and understanding a lot is possible change for the better is possible

  • Wise man.

  • should brought weed and smoked the whole room. the talk is very good though.

  • Poinant and moving story. Good rhymes too. Go save the life of a child peeps. Do it!!

  • i love stories with a happy ending! i hope one day there will be peace in africa...

  • beautiful and powerful message.

  • this man tells it like it is they don't need aid, they need tools to build there country to the fullist. like save a child program, lol they take money from what u give them insted of it all going to thoughs children, just giving things to them wont do any good, like this, feed a child and u have feed him for a day, but if u teach a child to fish then u have saved him for life.

  • I make it a habit to stay away from emotionally painful videos like this. As I am typing this, the video is paused at 0:00.

  • this is actually a very good video. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

  • You may be right, I'll watch tomorrow.

  • How odd. Are you trying to avoid painful emotions? Are you afraid of empathizing with their pain, or being lured into a good cause?

  • You should give money to nothing but nets it is a great charity

  • Ingenious!

  • Inspiring, simply inspiring

"Go save a life of a child"

  • this is awesome, he can dance with total abandon and freedom because his cause is SO noble

  • this made me cry.

  • Education is an important thing, but it will only take you so far. What they really need there is the same thing that Heidi Baker is doing in Mozambique.

  • If we have decided what is our nature, then we will never change.

Our collective minds have extraordinary capacities. Look at our modern age, with all it's technology, mobility, medicine and other meticulous science. This is what our minds can accomplish with a focus.

The ending of human problems is only as far as our focus and seriousness on the issue. Our willingness to examine ourselves, and how our own thoughts actions create our world.

  • I just admire this man :) great upload .

  • I wish I wasn't so good at empathy...

    /cryyyyyyyyyyyy

    great video, TED rules!

  • u no wot annoys me? the fact that some ppl in the crowd didnt want to stand up, however, they felt inclined to do so, since everyone around them is... You can jst tell by the look on their faces if u pause the vid.

  • shake dem dreads

  • props to this guy, he definitely loves what he does now.

  • simply brilliant. thanks, ted.

  • Awesome!! best TED talk ever!

  • wow this guy has nothing but goodness to spread to the world and still we have people who have nothing better to do than to leave these unnecessary comments that are negative

this one was a real tear jerker

  • wow this guy is so real it almost brings tears to my eyes. He knows what his people are capable of hes awesome

  • Reading Youtube comments is like a lesson in downs syndrome. Amazing.

  • IDOL worship like pretending jesus was white.

  • I thought I was famous enough to raise the money in one month, I have been humbled

  • A True OG

  • prompted by freeserb: *noisy yawn*

  • That was the best TED Talk ive seen, this guy should be on main stream Television, God bless him and the white girl who helped, God blessings I love them Love

  • very resourceful fellow, capable of making the most of any situation. we need more people like him.

  • his last song gave me goosebumps...

respect for him and his vision!

  • The west wants to divide and manage rest of the world. One good example is how the USA, UK, FRANCE, NORWAY interfered with Sri Lanka's internal matters when the government was finally defeating the terrorist organization which destroyed a nation over a period of 30 years. Thanks to China, India, Iran and Russia the UN resolution came out positively. It is sad...but true.

  • ...as the TEDsters clap awkwardly to the beat...

  • lol they're so white

  • HAHAHA!

  • What? How is this American worship of blacks? How can you think that one person with a dark pigmentation can be the same as another person with dark pigmentation based on their physical attributes? This guy is not even American, and TED is international. You are horribly ignorant, willfully or not.

  • holy crap, at least to SOME research before you say things like this, your facts are false to the highest degree

  • he speaks the truth - pay attention.

  • White western corpocracy, banks and religion is fueling these wars and sickness in the third world. Poor people..

  • I certainly hope that this post is sarcastic, otherwise I would like to know where you are getting these statistics from.

  • freeserb,

    hello racist idiot scumbag !

what do criminals in the US have to do with this guy?

what do have to do with George Custer,

    or Hitler?

  • There is a problem with your worldview. Your vews on "race" are far outdated. Today, we know that there is no such thing as race and that it is simply a social construct. Science proves that race is an illusion. There are scientific reasons why human beings vary in skin pigmentation. Do some research. In regards to "interracial" rape, what does that have to do with anything? Rape is rape. Is it not?

  • Is it possible to know where you get your data from? A person who survived genocide in Sudan gives a presentation and you are talking about blacks being criminal in the USA. Racism is a mental disease. Your case is not desperate, see a Psy. Peace!

  • I stood. I danced. I remembered the people that influenced me.

And I asked myself "What would I be...?"

  • fantastic talk

  • Victims in WWII don't deserve sympathy?

  • This isn't a sob story. Just because millions of people experience this type of hardship doesn't make it right. sympathy won't do anything for anyone. What you should have is empathy. If you haven't the capacity to feel for another human being and it's struggles, or even extend this to non humans then you lack that which makes human beings human the ability and willingness to care about the welfare of others.

  • He's not telling a sob story, he's trying to raise awareness to possibly change the situation. All people who've gone through this kind of hardship deserve empathy, but the least you can give is sympathy. He's not feeling sorry for himself, he's giving some biographical context for his music.

  • ara. "Raise awarness"- who in the develeped World does not know this goe`s on?.

  • The majority.

  • Drack.. Lol!!. What rubbish!. You saying the "majority" don`t watch/ read news?.

  • Why, yes. This is exactly what I'm saying. Hell, in fact, the media barely addresses it beyond making a sob story?

God forbid people be confronted by just how far their lifestyles take from other sentient beings across the globe, whether they like it or not.

  • Dracko. People are people- World poverty and such like- alway`s happened, alway`s will." Like it or not"- they do!!!!!...............

  • I'm not disagreeing with this at all, so I'm really not sure what your point is.

  • Dracko. No offence intended!. Fed up with ppl who slag me off. If they cared so much they would not be on YT- They would be "saving the World"- fucking hippocrite`s!-lol!!.

  • Not very many people think about it, and even less do anything to help. He has a good point; the people starting wars over there will eventually die, but if the youth is properly educated, there might be a chance for peace. Maybe you're in a special position to criticize this man's struggle. Perhaps you've seen your friends die in front of you while you are starving? You've maybe had to take up arms against an enemy you know nothing about? What's the source of your callousness?

  • it is not the nature of humans to kill each other. it is the nature of humans to commit violence under the illusion and perspective of necessity.

If America alone spend its military budget of feeding clothing and educating this world would be fed many times over without a single individual excluded and we can finally explore space - both inner and outer.

Stating human nature as human nature only reflects that you are one human who refuses to change and does not reflect the majority.

  • however if America spent it's military budget on charity it would be conquered instantly by other countries that have armies, maybe there cannot be a world without violence and war, but if it's possible we still have a long way to go

  • samual. The most sensible comment I have read!.

  • sam,

what country would instantly conquer the USA and why?

i don't think any country would even attempt to conquer us.

  • why not? like i said if there were no armies in the world it would be good, but right now about half the world would like to take over your country, North Korea and iran to name two of them

  • 1/2 the world?

    north korea and iran?

while i agree that the US gov't, corporations and military is criminal and its leaders should be jailed, no country wishes to invade the US, standing military or no.

  • how so? i mean it's big, fertile, if a country could take it over without any resistance why wouldn't they? also when i said Iran that's kind of a given since they are being ruled by a megalomaniacal, racist, homophobic despot.....even though recent event taught us that iranians are fed up with it

  • tillo."It is not the nature of human`s to kill eachother"- history is littered with killing. "Illusion"-You can state this because you are not fighting for your life ( comfy American? ). "Military budget"- Without it , you will be conquered (be killed ).The " Majority"-You have no voice because you don`t live in reality...................

  • @jjmm112

"history is littered with killing" Yes & life & love too. Families & villages prove this easier than the books of history. We are not a pack of wolves. Killing isn't human nature, it requires a motivator-hence a PERCEIVED Necessity.

"you are not fighting for your life" are you?

"Without [mltry. budget, the US] will be conquered" by whome? the US doesn't make anything, owes alot, has a weight problem & smells funny.

"You have no voice because you don't live in reality" How do you know?
