To the people having a whinge about Ablett not marking this ball - how about you actually watch this match - Steven O'Dwyer touched the ball almost literally and was paid the mark.
Ablett also narrowly missed the shot on goal after taking this mark. He kicked 7.7 for the day.
Then perhaps you need to watch his career highlights.
Perhaps then you'll rescind that statement...
Watch his 1994 'Mark of the Year'. One of the best leaps ever, but the mark was not taken above head. He flicked the ball down under his arm and carried it down controlling it.
When he landed on his back, the ball understandably got knocked out.
Most people don't even realise he was a top player in the mid 80s on the wing/half forward line...
Ablett did not play finals until 1989, yet besides his first year, from 85-88 he finished in the top 10 in the goalkicking for a half forward flanker/winger!
In 1988 Geelong finished like 10th yet Ablett finished with 82 goals...and had like 85 in 1985.
Geelong had a poor team and Ablett still performed.
Modra took a handful of great grabs, but you have not seen Ablett's career.
People like Carey were great at producing textbook footy...but nobody could do what Ablett did as often as he did, except Daicos. But Daicos was not as complete a player.
I think Ablett's 1989 was among the best ever by any player. He literally did everything. Broke records, beat teams single-handed and in my opinion, had the best year of his career.
Ablett won't want to return to Myrtleford full stop. I've never been there, but I can think of a better place to waste my life...such as my arse groove in this here computer chair I currently sit in!
His son is very good, but not as good as his father. His father is among the best ever to play, and probably the most freakish ever. His 1989 was brilliant. People say that Lockett was better, but Lockett kicked ~1367 goals from 17 years at Full Foward. Ablett kicked 1030 from only 3 years at Full Foward, with his other 10 being on the Wing, or Half Forward. He has the highest goal average per game for non-full forward ever -3.5, higher than the greatest player ever, Leigh Matthews.

Shouldn't be a mark. He didn't have control.
buzzerede 2 years ago
When he hits the ground, he was holding the ball.
Technically, the mark was taken when he hit the ground.
Yes, he did not control it in the air, but had it at ground level.
Your statement though is valid because without looking closely, I would have thought the same thing.

He's the king of marks that should never have been paid.

Only 4 seasons at full-forward.

Oh, and how much umpiring have you done lately?

He was the best ever.
Put him in the regimented modern game, and he'll still figure a way to entertain.

Ablett didn't have it much easier.

That is what sets him apart.

Modra really only had 1-2 top years.

Blah, Capper took bigger screamers than Modra.

Ablett's final series in 1989 has to be one of the greatest ever. He was unstoppable.
